Solid-state disk (SSD) drives are all the rage among techies. The drives use non-volatile NAND flash memory, meaning that there are no moving parts and they are faster in reading and, in most cases, writing data. Computerworld magazine has published a worth to read article Review: Hard disk vs. solid-state drive — is an SSD worth the money?
The conclusion in the article is: For most users, this a good time to consider buying a higher-end HDD that should deliver more-than-enough performance while you wait for SSD prices to drop further. That could be a long wait.
Typical notebook or desktop users probably won’t notice a big difference between an SSD drive and a traditional hard disk drive other than a faster boot-up and quicker application-launch times. For laptops and desktops, where consumers will continue to seek as much capacity as money can buy, SSD adoption will likely suffer for years to come.
SSDs make sense for small handheld devices and special applications. SSD will continue to dominate in small handheld devices because the cost to produce flash memory-based drives is significantly cheaper than hard disk drives when drive capacity does not need to be very big.

Linux does have a flash-cognizant file system, ubifs, if the system has direct access to raw flash. Remember, those of us who are Linux file system developers have relatively little ability to impact what Intel and other SSD vendors will be making available to the market. We can try making some suggestions, but at the end of the day it’s probably more useful for us to adapt to what they are doing — assuming we can figure it out or we can get low-level implementations out of them, along with warnings about what aspects of their internal implementation are likely to be around in future versions of their SSD’s, and what are initial implementation bugs that will likely disappear in future firmware updates or in future versions of their products.

i have a emachine and i had to re-install windows xp on it so it had to copys i went to take the original (first copy from 07 off) and i did i deleted it and everything and now since i turned my computer off to restart it it just will restart and act like its going to boot up and restarts again i have to option of choosing the old windows or new windows and either one i press it dont work and it says something like to get ur computer back at its best working time press this i do and it dont work and safe mode doesnt work either so how can i completely take both of those windows off my computer before i install it back onto it..and place it says that theres very low space on the hard drive soo yeah i need to take everything completely off is that possible to do without it booting up and if so how do i do it please let me know and when i installed the windows just recently the new one…i had the option to delete the old copy of windows i pressed that but it didnt work please let me know how i can do this thanks alotttt!

My brother-in-law is originally from Mexico and even now struggles to speak clear English. His ESL teacher suggested that he watch American television exhibits to pick up on idioms which are commonly utilized. He loves to Cant Filter Me. so, every chance he gets, he borrows our laptop to accomplish just that. My husband and I desire to see him succeed in this goal so we’re considering purchasing him a laptop for his birthday. He would need to buy Internet access, but I believe they can afford that on their monthly budget. I haven’t addressed this with my sister yet, but hope to this weekend.

I’m wanting to run multiple OS’s on my laptop due to Microsoft Virtual PC been too underpowered but not sure where to start from. Any good guides you can refer me to or even explain it yourself perhaps? I’m running Windows Vista and will be wanting to run Windows 7, Ubuntu, Fedora and ‘possibly’ Mac OS X (Yes I know EULA blah blah, but its for educational purposes..yes really!) Also if I install these will I still be able to access the recovery partition and do a fresh install of Vista at any point? Thanks
