Jolla sells phones already pre-orders for 399 euros. Later in stores the price may be something else.

How many phones do you sell next year?

“I think the number is closer to a million”, says Saarnio.

In the past Jolla has assured the Sailfish licensed their operating system to other electronics manufacturers. The job is now moving forward in such a way that the first Jolla will complete your Jolla phone. Then it develops Sailfish phone, which it sells to other phone brands. Why should I buy Jolla?

Jolla has not released a complete phone specifications, but it seems like quite a large extent comparable to Nokia’s Lumia 820 model. There is therefore a top model, but the upper-middle-class device, however. And the price range is the same.

Jolla life and death lies on its operating system.

If the phone will be available in the Christmas market, the operating system has been developed to Nokia ever after less than two years. The time span is long enough so that the operating system can be expected to be properly polished, functional and free of any significant capability gaps.

Multitasking alone does not suffice as the only selling point, the iPhone and the Lumia lelumoniajo enough to power well.

The manufacturer’s software collection is also essential because the handset does not seem to be able to download programs from Google Play software store. Smart phone does not do much, if Facebook, Twitter, and Angry Birds, YouTube, or the map will not work. And we will see whether to allow Google Maps use without further compensation.

Personally for me the most disappointing Jolla phone in terms of lack of a physical keyboard. It is a shame that the company did not understand the importance of a proper QWERTY

As you can see, the design Jolla is okay, is not objectionable. The design is recognisably different.

The screen is the current standard in terms of the average level of 4.5-inch. It is too wide for regular hand so that you could use all functions with one hand.

Jolla usability problems related to the fact that the machine does not have physical buttons. To return to the Home Menu You got it swipe left or right edge such that the finger above the screen edge.

On the test scan was the worst to try several times before Jolla understood the command to the phone and opened the home menu.

It may be that the sensitivity of the touch screen further refined the final retail version. The phone presented Jolla software development manager Marc Dillon mentioned, though, that this is the final version of the display.

If the corresponding sensitivity problem is the final product, it may be complicated to use.

Jolla phone has a specialty: replaced the back cover, which will bring new features to the phone. Faceplate is a technical component, which can be programmed for a variety of content such as images, audio, and software.

Hands-on with Jolla’s first smartphone running Sailfish OS
    http://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2013/06/13/hands-on-with-jollas-first-smartphone-running-sailfish-os/

Finnish-based startup Jolla unveiled the first smartphone running Sailfish OS, its new mobile platform created from the ashes of Nokia’s abandoned MeeGo project, at the tail-end of last month.

It’s an unprecedented device, opting for an industrial design that uses two distinct and utterly contrasting parts. A sleek top half houses the display and core components, while a colorful, rounded bottom half offers additional themes and content through a separate chip.

    Wrap up

The first Jolla smartphone is still in development, but it’s already shaping up to be a robust and refreshing proposition. The vertical screen layout is a nice change from Android or iOS, and the overall design is rather beautiful. The apps are sleek, it’s nippy to use and general navigation is a far-cry from the mess found on BlackBerry 10.

The question, however, remains the same. Is Jolla doing enough to carve out its own niche in the smartphone market? Is the “Other Half” just a gimmick, or a feature that consumers are crying out for?

The company has received orders for 136 countries.

Which does not tell you the exact figure, but suggests that the phones manufactured in the early stages, at least 50 000. This, in turn, is a direct indication of orders.

MeeGo Startup Jolla Closes Pre-Sales Campaign For Its First Phone, Booking Orders Of Up To 50,000 Units
    http://techcrunch.com/2013/08/21/jolla-closes-first-pre-sales/

Jolla, the Finnish startup comprised of ex-Nokians that’s building its own MeeGo-based smartphone platform and phone hardware has closed out a pre-sales campaign for the device it showed off in May. Thing is, it’s not saying how many phones are in this first pre-order batch — so it’s not really saying very much about the level of demand it’s seeing (or not seeing).

Although Jolla is not giving out the exact number of devices prebooked it can be said that the size of the production batch for a mobile device vendor of this size is typically 50,000 units,” a Jolla spokesperson said.

Jolla’s pre-sales campaign took partial payments from buyers wanting to reserve a handset ahead of release later this year (the first device shipments are due at the start of Q4 2013).

Jolla said today it may do a second pre-sales campaign this year — but again, isn’t providing solid confirmation at this point.

Still, according to analyst Juniper Research, there is an opportunity for Jolla’s Sailfish to carve out a niche for itself as one of a number of “new emerging players” in the smartphone OS space. In a report this week the analyst said that while Android and iOS will continue to dominate the global landscape over the next five years, the “smartphone OS market will see new emerging players, such as Asha, Sailfish and emerging HTML 5 based OS players begin to gain ground in niche areas”. Collectively it’s predicting these new players could capture 13% of the market by 2018.

Small Hill points out that the Lumia’s market share has been higher in Finland than anywhere else. This explains his view that the Finns want to continue to favor domestic. This may be Jollalle an important niche.

Nokia’s acquisition does not in itself change the way Jolla plans

Could Jolla do co-operation in the future with Nokia?

    - We are the owners of the thing, and they decide to potential cooperation. I do not like the Nokia co-operation impossible.

FINNISH PHONE MAKER Jolla has finally revealed the full specifications for its debut Sailfish OS smartphone, just a day after the handset went back up for pre-order.

The firm clearly is looking to challenge its big name rivals with its phone’s specifications, as it has revealed that the phone will feature a 4.5in 960×540 AMOLED display, a user-replaceable 2,100mAh battery and a dual-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Jolla benefit can also be calculated more grand Ubuntu Edge to crash a number of financial projects. Edge would in itself have been a very interesting novelty. It’s a shame that the price of ruined its chances.

Jolla has not made a similar mess up. The first phone is very common in available components. Technically, the phone is quite modest, but on the other hand, it is reasonable priced, pre-order 399 euros.

Jolla phone’s design is quite successful and the operating system is interesting. Sailfish operating system helps to distinguish Jolla mass, but the challenge is to get the developers. On the other hand Android apps available to facilitate the application in short supply.

Jolla wants developers to write native apps for its Sailfish OS, but it looks like the platform’s initial boost will need to come from its compatibility with Android.

But, given that Google’s Play Store is out of the question, how are users supposed to get their hands on those apps? A team of ex-Nokia employees has released the first handset running on a new smartphone platform.

The Jolla phone – pronounced Yol-la – is powered by open-source operating system Sailfish, but can run most apps designed for Google’s Android platform.

The company has paired with a major Finnish network, and hopes to set up a similar deal with a UK operator.

Just 450 Jolla phones will be available at launch on Wednesday evening, with the majority going to customers who have pre-ordered the device.

Co-founder Marc Dillon told the BBC the company was in the process of ramping up manufacturing.

He said the phone’s ethos was to provide a more “open” approach to how people used their mobiles, a contrast to the relatively closed systems used on the iPhone and, to a lesser extent, Android devices.

“There’s different opportunities for people to get apps form different places, different stores,” he said.

“We’ve created a world-class platform. Users will be getting more choice.”

Analyst Geoff Blaber, from CCS, said while it might seem Jolla was taking on an impossibly large challenge by trying to muscle in, its strategy could pay off.

“It’s easy to characterise this as David v Goliath,” he told the BBC. “But the fact is if Jolla can maintain a competitive cost base, there is already an enthusiast base seeking this product. It could be successful.”

Back in June, Jolla secured its first mobile phone carrier. Finland’s third largest smartphone carrier, DNA, will be the first to sell Jolla’s (pronounced Yo-Lah) flagship phone.

The only Meego phone Nokia ever released, the now two-year-old N9, has been given a new lease of life today. Owners can now install the new Meego descendent Sailfish alongside the original OS.

With Nokia closing the Meego App Store at the end of the year, owners should be able to enjoy the more up-to-date Sailfish apps, as well as being able to run Android apps via a runtime.

Other half connectors will be wireless NFC, power out/in and L2C connector. L2C was the surprise here that we knew nothing about and is the special sauce that makes the other half. L2C stands for Inter-Integrated Circuit, and it’s used to connect low-speed peripherals to motherboard.

Here’s example Texas Instruments QWERTY-capable I2C keyboard controller or FM transmitter module.

Column: Nobody buy Jolla phone with reason

IT people and nerds earnestly expect Jolla phone has finally gone on sale . Now you should just come up with to whom the phone is intended , write Petteri Järvinen .

Finland is back on track , because we have another domestic phone manufacturer. However, devices are manufactured in China , but at least the brand and know-how are Finns. The name is a beautiful, almost poetic : Jolla.

Jolla operating system is the Sailfish , or sailfish. Family tree has terms Maemo , Moblin , MeeGo , Mer, and Qt.

As for its names suggests, Jolla is not intended to a standard telephone user. It is intended for people who know what they are buying.

They are willing to pay 399 euro phone that is running an ad that the beta stage (in Finnish words: not yet complete ), and which may be only a few applications. It is a phone that no one will buy common sense , but even more emotion.

Jolla phone refutes the claim that the engineers are not comfortable feelings. This is in fact just the phone that Nokia had to do.

Many feel that the decision for Nokia to change to Windows Phone platform was a bad mistake . Part of the engineers , resigned and founded Jolla to continue the development of MeeGo . Their efforts are now visible to all. This , if anything, is feeling satiated moment .

Jolla shows how much the phone market has evolved in recent years . It is no longer enough to know how to make a good phone . The smartphone has a lot more , a whole microcosm . The phone is ubiquitous operating system, upon which the day’s work and leisure routines to rotate.

It is questionable whether it would be able to create a Nokia MeeGo ecosystem upon the fourth , when the market was already on Google’s Android , Apple’s iOS and Microsoft’s Windows . Canadian Blackberry was not able to , even though it was very popular a few years ago .

For a small Jolla the situation is even more difficult . It has come up with something else in order to keep it on surface.

One way is to invest in information security. Yankee spy agency NSA has access to the American mobile companies in the cloud, so the Finnish culture and the EU area private cloud are clear competitive advantages. But they are hardly alone are sufficient.

Another option is to profile a geek phone.

The real point is , however, Sailfish operating system multitasking. Unfortunately, it is also the Achilles heel because of battery consumption.

Jolla, the best strategy is to license the platform to other Sailfish , most likely from Asian or South American device manufacturers and operators. After that is their problem to figure out how to raise the profile of the phone stand out from the rest.

In the best case Jolla own phones are margin products , but the Finnish mobile expertise in engineering and sail sailfish to the world.

    http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/jolla-sailfish-phone-on-sale-in-uk-and-europe-for-331-50013067/

Bored of Android or the iPhone? The latest upstart smart phone system, Sailfish, born within Nokia, is on sale now in the shape of the case-swapping Jolla phone.

The Jolla phone is available to buy now for €399 — about £331 — in Europe, Switzerland and Norway. The new 4G phone runs Sailfish OS, which started life as MeeGo, software that was briefly considered as the future of Nokia before the Finnish phone-flingers settled on Microsoft’s Windows Phone instead.

The phone has previously been available for pre-order in Finland and was dispatched this month to the select few phone fans who got in early. When you order from the new online shop, your Jolla phone arrives in two to four weeks.

Jolla also plans to open a website at together.jolla.com — at the time of writing it’s not live yet — where phone fans can discuss and vote on which features they would like to see in Jolla, as well as report problems.

Jolla is another rising star in the tech world, having recently expanded its smartphone sales into more countries across the globe. Jolla’s Sailfish OS is based on the Linux kernel, and considered by many to be a direct successor to Nokia and Intel’s MeeGo and the N9 mobile phone. Its software is based on the open-sourced components of MeeGo. Now, the company is ready to start production of its first tablet. They’re crowdfunding it, and they blew past their $380,000 goal in about two hours.

Judging by its size, we can see this will rival the iPad Mini the new Nokia N1.

Jolla’s Sailfish OS reaches 2.0, embraces Intel, licensing
    http://www.slashgear.com/jollas-sailfish-os-reaches-2-0-embraces-intel-licensing-02371529/

There comes a time when every child grows up and starts to leave home for his or her own adventures. For Jolla’s own Sailfish OS, that time has come. In preparation for the upcoming launch of the successfully crowdfunded Jolla Tablet next quarter, the Finnish startup is announcing the next major version of Sailfish 2.0. While details on what’s new for end users are still quite slim, the release is meant more to entice partners, particularly of the hardware kind, to join in on the fun

Sailfish OS was primarily designed to be used on Jolla’s ARM-powered first smartphone.

That tablet is expected to ship in the next few months, but while things are still cooking on the hardware front, Jolla apparently has a ready-made software meal. Sailfish OS 2.0, as it is dubbed, is the next evolution of the platform. It scales the OS from smartphones to tablets, from ARM to Intel. In particular, it is adding support for the Intel Atom x3 processor platform. This is Intel’s first processor to combine a 64-bit Atom CPU with 3G or 4G connectivity. In short, this opens the floodgates for more Sailfish-compatible devices in the future.
