Jolla phone first hands-on

Yesterday I got my hand on friend’s Jolla Sailfish OS smartphone. Jolla smartphone is the first handset that runs Jolla’s Sailfish OS, which is essentially a reworked version of Nokia’s now defunct Meego OS. The Sailfish OS is compatible with Android apps. The general quick fell on the phone is that it is pretty good feeling product to be be first product of a new small company (keep in mind that many people behind it worked long time for Nokia developing Meego which made that possible).

The phone feels pretty much like a combination of Android smart phone and Linux computer you can hack yourself. Here is the picture of the phone on my hand with the Linux console showing on the screen (I wanted to show something special instead of main screen photos you see on every magazine article talking on Jolla phone).

Here is a close-up of the Linux console screen showing the processes running on the device.

At my quick hands-on the phone gave quite positive feeling. Jolla promised quite a lot and it seems that they succeeded well in delivering what they promised. The Android compatibility worked as I expected: Most of Android applications tested worked very well on the device, but some applications failed to work.

IT specialist Petteri Järvinen tested five non-scientific methods, the phone’s battery life. Jolla phone turned out to be a clear power-hungry .

“I hope Jolla decrease the power consumption of future updates. Worst-case scenario is that the core itself is Sailfishin power burners . Then things are hard to fix ,” Järvinen write Bit Meter blog.

Jolla Sailfish phone on sale in UK and Europe for £331

Bored of Android or the iPhone? The latest upstart smart phone system, Sailfish, born within Nokia, is on sale now in the shape of the case-swapping Jolla phone.

The Jolla phone is available to buy now for €399 — about £331 — in Europe, Switzerland and Norway. The new 4G phone runs Sailfish OS, which started life as MeeGo, software that was briefly considered as the future of Nokia before the Finnish phone-flingers settled on Microsoft’s Windows Phone instead.

The phone has previously been available for pre-order in Finland and was dispatched this month to the select few phone fans who got in early. When you order from the new online shop, your Jolla phone arrives in two to four weeks.

Jolla also plans to open a website at together.jolla.com — at the time of writing it’s not live yet — where phone fans can discuss and vote on which features they would like to see in Jolla, as well as report problems.

Jolla sports a 4.5-inch screen with a run-of-the-mill 540×960-pixel resolution, a dual-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM doing the thinking. It also boasts an 8-megapixel camera with a 2-megapixel front-facing job for video chat, and 16GB storage.

It is true that Jolla battery life is not great and the phone has flaws, sailfish , and there are no programs on the market are strong competitors in the ready-made software and a variety of applications.

But on the other hand is a wonder that less than one hundred people have been with a group phone on the market . Intel and Samsung have not been able to bring Tizen phone still on sale.

Sailifish is a welcome change. Sailfish is a really stylish , one of the most elegant mobile operating systems.

It’s a shame that there is little Sailfish applications and Yandex Android app store has an unrivaled range of modest. But Amazon’s trade may be installed very easily and Google Play a little tweaking . Android Apps work surprisingly well

The command line is ready to go, as long as the activation status of the developer.

But yes Jolla is also suitable for the end-user , as long as it really to install , say, the Amazon app store

Hopefully, the first Jolla phone succeeds so well that the next phone is seen.

Jolla entices hardware hackers with free device development kit
Unique ‘smart covers’ make modding your mobe a snap
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/02/07/jolla_toh_hardware_developer_kit/

Upstart Finnish smartphone company Jolla has released a developer kit that enables independent tinkerers to create devices for The Other Half (TOH), Jolla’s exclusive, snap-on peripheral system.

TOH devices look like phone covers, and they snap onto the back of Jolla handsets like covers, but they contain electronics that allow each TOH device to provide additional content or functionality to the phone.

With the TOH development kit, Jolla has made plain that it wants its hardware ecosystem to be open, too – mostly.
