Sonera building a big data center

Telecom operator Sonera rents equipment locations, equipment space and related services in Sonera-managed data centers. Sonera has already a countrywide network of data centers. Sonera is building the biggest open data center in Finland to this location to Pitäjänmäki in Helsinki where they have mined 75 000 cubic meters of rock (4000 truck loads).

Sonera Helsinki future data center foundation stone was laid last week ar Pitäjänmäki. The data center will be completed in 2017, and it will be the biggest Finnish open data center offering services to all companies. The size of the data center will be over 30 000 square meters and it is designed to be suitable for up to 200 000 servers. Most of the server space will be underground. The estimated power consumption will be 30 megawatts. The capacity of the data center is at least 30 MW, and it’s theoretical maximum capacity is even 100 MW.

The construction of the data center is estimated to cost approximately MEUR 130–150. The data center is scheduled to be completed towards the end of 2017. This Sonera’s new data center is designed to be Finland’s most modern and energy-efficient data center as the excess heat is reused to heat other buildings (produces approximately 200 MWh of thermal energy per year) and there is renewable energy generation at the location.

Data warms the future citizens of Espoo

Sonera and Fortum have signed a letter of intent Sonera’s new data center utilization resulting from the activities of waste heat for district heating. Data center can generate heat up to 200 gigawatt-hours per year.

TeliaSonera to build Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki, Finland’s largest open a data center, which is scheduled for completion at the end of 2017. Data center data center computers generate a significant amount of heat in the future. Now signed a letter of intent with it are collected and conducted to heat homes in Espoo and hot water.

Heat collection begins at the stage where sufficient heat is generated. This is likely to occur at the beginning of 2019.

    - Our goal is to recycle at least 80 percent of the heat generated

The data center has a surface area of over 30, 000 square meters, seats up to 200 000 server and has power capacity of 24 megawatts.

Telia opened a giant data center in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki

Several data centers have risen in Finland over the last few years. Telia takes delivery of the server space to a new level when it officially opens the data center building in Helsinki’s Pitäjänmäki office on Tuesday. Telia Helsinki Data Center is the largest open data center in Finland and multiplies the business capacity of the companies.

“Electricity was put into service a couple of weeks ago, and next time they may be extinguished after perhaps 30 years,” says Pasi Sutinen , Telia’s Data Operations Manager.

The organization’s design has focused on both physical security and information security. So, according to Sutinen, the information, electricity and fire extinguishing systems are among the most advanced systems in the world, and the data center is, as a whole, the most modern in Europe.

The Datacenter is a EUR 160 million investment in Telia. In Finland, Google’s only data center in Hamina is bigger, but it’s only for Google’s own servers. Telia provides server space for everyone, and the customer can, if desired, bring Telia’s rack even to their own server.

Pasi Sutinen says the data center as a modern cost-effective mill: it is about automating and controlling energy use and heat regulation. Most of the energy goes to cooling the servers.

“This could also be called a district heating plant. We convert (transform) electrical energy to heat energy, which then goes to Fortum’s district heating network to heat Espoo houses. This is of utmost importance, as we are able to receive up to 24 megawatts of energy at the best and we can release it as 20 megawatts of heat energy. ”

At best, the heat generated by the servers can heat up to 20,000 homes. Energy efficiency is also the reason why Telia believes in large data centers and not the decentralized small-scale model.

“In small installations, energy efficiency is not so good.”

“Automation enables the service to be cost-effective. That’s why a few million dollars have been invested. ”

    Building big chunks

Telia’s data center is the construction of large numbers. In the huge building in the center of Pitäjänmäki’s office buildings in Helsinki, there are seven meters high server rooms with a floor space below one meter of technical space. The rooms are on four floors, partly under the ground.

There are 110 kilovolt electric lines in the two corners, and 300 cube diesel fuel tanks in the tanks. Extinguishing systems spill, if necessary, irrigation water as a fine mist and part of the compartments used for extinguishing gas.

“This building is an essential part of the upcoming 5g,” says Telia’s 5g Program Director Janne Koistinen .

Finland’s largest open data center started operations in Helsinki. The EUR 160 million paid and the Helsinki Data Center , which is two parliamentary houses, multiplies the domestic data base capacity.

According to Telia, Finland’s largest data center has invested in energy efficiency, eco-friendliness and security.

“The Helsinki Data Center is designed specifically for this purpose. In addition, the building has been heavily bolted to Telia’s international network, which accounts for nearly 40 percent of the world’s total net traffic daily, “says Telia Finland’s CEO Stein-Erik Vellan .

“Data factories of this type enable both society and businesses to fully utilize data through artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things, and 5G, all of our everyday life, at an accelerating pace,” says Pasi Sutinen .

“The Helsinki Data Center is the greenest data center in Europe, which has gained the most significant environmental certifications in the industry,” Sutinen sums up.

”Datakeskus kuluttaa paljon energiaa ja tuottaa valtavan määrän lämpöä

”Päädyimme kuitenkin siihen, että järkevintä on käyttää lämpö 25 000 espoolaisasunnon lämmittämiseen, mihin yllämme, kun rakennuksen koko kapasiteetti on lähivuosina käytössä”

    PALVELIMET PYÖRIVÄT VESIVOIMALLA

Telian kesäkuussa 2018 avatulle datakeskukselle on myönnetty kultatason LEED-ympäristösertifikaatti. Telia Helsinki Data Centerillä on toistaiseksi korkeimmat ympäristöpisteet kaikkien LEED-sertifioitujen datakeskusten joukosta.
