    It might not seem like much on the surface, but Hyperloop is hailing its 70 mph, 315-foot test run as a “Kitty Hawk moment.”

    Shortly after midnight May 12, Hyperloop guided a wheel-mounted sled 315 feet through a vacuum tube, reaching “nearly 2Gs of acceleration” and a top speed of 70 mph as it traveled down a guideway for 5.3 seconds, the company said. The sled accelerated for about 100 feet — the length of the motor — and lifted to a glide, according to the company.

    If you’ve been dying to know what it’s like to ride in a hyperloop at hundreds of miles per hour, watch this video.

    Last week, Virgin Hyperloop One, one of the leading companies in the budding industry dedicated to realizing Elon Musk’s vision of flinging people and stuff through tubes in a near-vacuum and at borderline supersonic speeds, set a new speed record: 240 miles per hour.

    At its DevLoop track in the Nevada desert, north of Las Vegas, the company’s engineers loaded their 28-foot-long pod into a 1,600-foot-long concrete test tube. The newly developed airlock system maintained the nearly airless environment, which approximated the air pressure you get at 200,000 feet above sea level (the thinner the air, the less resistance to overcome). Thanks to magnetic levitation, the pod hovered above the test track, knocking off another key source of friction—the deadliest enemy of futuristic, high-speed travel.

    And then, whoosh.

    Within a few seconds, the pod had hit top speed, beating the existing (publicly known) hyperloop speed record, set by Elon Musk this summer at 220 mph.

    OMG its here!!! less than a month to supersonic travel to anywhere in LA for less than a dollar…….
    meanwhile in reality you can go up and down a 2 mile tunnel at probably 30mph.

    Puhtaampi, tehokkaampi ja turvallisempi. Muun muassa nämä edut englantilainen insinööri–poliitikko Joseph Samuda näki uudessa kulkuvälineessä, alipainejunassa (engl. atmospheric railway), jota hän mainosti esseessään vuonna 1841.

    Tuohon aikaan rautatie ylipäätään oli vielä uutuus, eivätkä tekniset ratkaisut olleet vielä täysin vakiintuneet. Niinpä alipainejuna pääsi nousemaan joksikin aikaa jopa pieneksi muoti-ilmiöksi.

    Alipainerautateillä kiskojen välissä kulki valurautainen putki, läpimitaltaan 35–60 cm. Juna oli kytketty putken sisälle mäntään, jota liikutti paine-ero ulkoilman ja putkeen junan etupuolelle imetyn osittaisen tyhjiön välillä.

    Pumppaamot ja putket olivat kiinteät. Tältä osin alipainejunien tekniikka poikkesi oleellisesti myöhemmistä paineilma-autoista, jotka kuljettavat painetankkia mukanaan.

    Idean alipainejunasta kehitti englantilaiskeksijä George Medhurst vähitellen 1800-luvun alkuvuosikymmeninä.     Hyperloop One, the futurist transportation company (in case you forgot) that promised to whisk passengers and cargo in vacuum-sealed tubes at jet speeds from city to city, is officially over – but this time, it’s for real. According to Bloomberg, the much-hyped, long-beleaguered company will officially close its doors on December 31.

    Elon Musk put forth his original idea in an “alpha paper” back in 2013, which theorized that aerodynamic pods filled with passengers or cargo could be whisked, Jetsons-style, through tubes at up to 760 mph to and from cities. He described it as a “fifth mode of transportation,” with a dream scenario being Los Angeles to San Francisco and New York to DC in 30 minutes, ultimately transforming our lives and work.

    While scientists and engineers debunked the project as grossly improbable, no matter, Musk’s idea proved too irresistible. In 2014, Hyperloop One raised, and subsequently burned through, hundreds of millions of dollars in developing its vision, which went through multiple iterations over the years. Virgin Group’s billionaire Richard Branson brought his financial heft to the company in 2017, bringing in $350 million in investments alongside Dubai-based port logistics firm DP World, but that money got quickly spent.
