I would say your amp is rated at 400 watts "into 4 Ohms" and that is a total of "all" the available outputs (channels). That means it "could be" 100 watts per channel into 4 Ohm speakers. That works out to be roughly 80 watts per channel at 8 Ohms which are what "most" home stereo speakers are. Dig a bit deeper and I bet you find out what I said is the case. Something to think about....
In order to obtain a discernable difference in volume you have to double the output wattage to your speakers. This means if you have a 40 watt amp and you want to have more volume, going to a 60 watt amp is not going to produce the result you are shooting for. You would have to get an 80 watt amp before you would notice it.
