: Does macrovision protection get transmitted through the RGB signals from a DVD player??

No. Macrovision does not get transmitted through DVD player RGB interface. No device which I know of puts Macrovision to RGB signal (even though they could put that to composite video, S-video and component video outputs).

I am not sure if there is a technical limitations that Macrovision does not transimit nicely through RGB interface or the device manufacturers/standarizers have not just saw any need for this. I have heard of rumours that there coudl be Macrovision on RGB interface planned somewhere, but nothing proven on this.

So the current situation is: No Macrovision on RGB

: If NOT then maybe there's an easy way to backup DVDs to VHS, either by (a) an RGB to S Video / Composite Video convertor

That's very easy way if you have such converter available (or can easily build such device).

: or (b) routing the RGB signal into a TV that has S Video / Composite Video output.

Televisions do not generally do the conversion RGB to Composite/S-video. They do not have the electronics for this. They can route other signal format from SCART interface to other and take RGB in, but generally they do not do any signal format conversions (if they would do that the electronics in them would cost more which is not wise in very price-sensitive TV markets, because very few people need this kind of conversion option).

: Of course there will be some loss of quality but hell you can't have everything for free.

With a proper conversion device (external converter) you get as good quality that normal VCR can give.

: Any comments?? (I'm not knowledgeable on this other than maybe the preliminary deductions above).

: Let me know either by email or posting back,

: Cheers
