Update:Sunday,Dec 22,2002
There was an article published in my city by a local newspaper so this is a start,I am reposting this for everyone:
Tittle:staying alive in tv/vcr/stereo repairs
The consumer electronics repair industry is not what it used to be,even in the good old days our industry always had lots of overhead expenses, timely repairs that took weeks or even months to find parts or for them to arrive when in fact I believe that every manufacturer that sells a product should back it with repair parts in every state or province, and of course those costly service manuals/schematics.
In most countries the owner’s manuals of most equipment have a large fold out schematic diagram inside them which customers kept in case their equipment failed in the future and if for some reason the customer lost the owner’s manual, the tech or repair shop usually had an owner’s manual from a boneyard unit or the tech could even call the manufacturer in his/her country where they would mail,e-mail,or even fax that schematic free of charge, but not in Canada or the USA.Many nations charge taxes and the like on consumer electronics thereby making their repairs feasable as well as many countries have a Fair Trading Act which stipulates that manufacturers have to set a reasonable price for repair parts/service literature, also it helps the economy by creating and keeping jobs in the service industry not only to mention reduces the number of landfills and helps the environment in the long run.
The practice of consumer electronic manufacturers setting high prices on repair
parts/literature in Canada and the USA is what I & many techs call this unfair as it is viewed by many techs in the service industry as a way of keeping the production line going for newly manufactured consumer electronics, and common sense would tell anyone a tech or not that if a vcr is made up of let’s say 300 parts then ideally speaking one repair part should not cost the price of a new vcr,the same holds true for other equipment, the customer in this free country of ours should have freedom to choose and express themselves as to whether they would like to repair their unit for a reasonable cost or purchase a new unit, nowdays with lawsuits and intimidation by big corporations about us talking about such a subject I would like to be politically correct by saying that we have the right to:
Freedom to choose
Freedom of speech
Freedom of expression
Freedom of association
We all have to make a living just like anyone else and our industry happens to be an industry that was always less profitable but now we can’t even afford to stay in business so I urge & encourage all consumer electronics service technicians and even consumer electronics parts distributors to write/call:
