Can static noise on audio channel be due to faulty memory chip ?

Hi, I have had a problem with apparently random static noise
appearing on the right channel of most of the Wav files I record and edit.
After much chasing and testing I seem to have now narrowed down the problem to this:
I noticed that when I grab a sound track from my CD drive to a hard disk, the static noise appears on the right channel, even if I first thought that this is a digital transfer and no analog input can interfere. Obviouly such is not the case.
I then removed the second 256 meg RAM card from my mainboard (Gigabyte)and repeated the same grab: clicks were gone in most files except a very very few.
I then replaced the first RAM card by the second: plenty of clicks showed up again on the right track of grabbed files.

Now my question is to those who know this stuff and understand the electronics involved in a grab operation, which I obviously do not:
Is it possible that a memory chip may be causing static noise during a grab or is there something else to check to further narrow down the problem?
Thank you for suggestions and comments.
Dan
