i have a NPN transistor and want to connect it with a Relay...

but i want to check whether it is NPN or not...how i can do that using a multi-meter..

NPN means = provide positive voltage at the centre pin of transistor...centre pin is mostly collector..

I have placed my transistor in my multi-meter and set the meter on hFE which shows 175 gain...and show nothing i place the transistor in some other arrangment..

any other way ....to confirm

also about PNP transistors...
how to check them?
