President Barack Obama has ordered the expulsion of 35 suspected Russian spies in response to “malicious cyber activity and harassment” by Putin’s government for attempts to undermine the 2016 election.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Obama ordered a number of actions in response to “the Russian government’s aggressive harassment of US officials and cyber operations aimed at the US election.”

He said the decision was a “necessary and appropriate response” to efforts to harm US interests in violation of established international norms of behavior.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Thursday published a Joint Analysis Report (JAR) to detail the tools and infrastructure that Russian hackers used in attacks against the United States election.

US President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday responded to a slew of US election related sanctions against Russia with a call for the country to “move on” and a conciliatory pledge to meet US spy chiefs he has harshly criticized.

“It’s time for our country to move on to bigger and better things,” Trump said, echoing previous prickly reactions to allegations his November win over Hillary Clinton was somehow tainted by Russian interference.
