Panda Green Energy — formerly known as United Photovoltaics — connected a 50 MW solar array to the grid this week in northwestern China.

China Merchants New Energy Group (CMNE) — Panda Green Energy’s largest shareholder — signed an agreement with the UNDP last September to build panda-shaped PV projects, as part of efforts to raise awareness about sustainable development among young people in China.

The EPC deal for the installation in Datong county, Shanxi province, was valued at roughly 369 million yuan ($54.4 million), according to a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

The project includes a includes a youth activity center to teach schoolchildren about the benefits of solar energy. The electricity generated by the array is expected to contribute to the reduction of roughly 60,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Most solar farms align their solar arrays in rows and columns to form a grid.

A new solar power plant in Datong, China, however, decided to have a little fun with its design. China Merchants New Energy Group, one of the country’s largest clean energy operators, built a 248-acre solar farm in the shape of a giant panda.

The first phase, which includes one 50-megawatt plant, was completed on June 30, according to PV magazine.
