New rules for a more circular and resilient EU automotive industry enter into force today!

The End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) Regulation will:

improve resource efficiency
increase the recovery and reuse of valuable materials
enhance the environmental performance of vehicles throughout their lifecycle

And will help secure a more stable supply of secondary raw materials, reduce Europe’s dependence on imported virgin resources, and support a more resilient automotive industry.

Because every tonne of steel, aluminium, copper or plastic recovered from a dismantled car is a step towards a more resilient, sustainable and competitive Europe.

Tesla on saanut valmiiksi seuraavan sukupolven AI5-tekoälyprosessorinsa suunnittelun. Piirin on määrä antaa yhtiön tuleville autoille moninkertaisesti nykyistä enemmän laskentatehoa, mutta yksin se ei tee Teslasta autonomista. AI5 voi kuitenkin poistaa robottiauton tieltä yhden keskeisen esteen, eli auton oman tietokoneen rajallisen suorituskyvyn.

Tesla ei ole vielä varsinaisesti esitellyt AI5-piiriä, mutta yhtiö julkaisi siitä ensimmäisen kuvan huhtikuun osavuosikatsauksessaan. Tesla ilmoitti samalla saaneensa piirin lopullisen suunnittelun valmiiksi. The Cybertruck is a flop.

For all of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s grandiose claims that the pickup would be an “apocalypse-proof” tank capable of winning its driver style points wherever they go, it’s instead earned a reputation for being incredibly unreliable and just about the opposite of “easy on the eyes” — probably because you can imagine the numerous sharp edges that define its low-poly design poking you in them as soon as you see it.

Most unforgivable in the capitalist society Musk champions, it hasn’t sold well. He once estimated that Tesla would sell up to 500,000 Cybertrucks annually, but it hasn’t even come close to that number in the nearly three years since it first started shipping, and at this point it probably won’t in its entire lifetime.

So, yes. It’s a flop. But could it also be the greatest flop in American automotive history?

A new piece from Bloomberg makes the case, comparing the Tesla vehicle to the misfortunes of Ford’s Edsel, which was first introduced in 1957 and discontinued just two years later. After spending years building up hype for the car, Ford predicted selling 200,000 units in its first year, but ended up selling less than a third of that.

As if things couldn’t get any worse for Tesla in Europe, traffic safety researchers now say they’ve caught the company cooking numbers they gave to regulators in order to get its “Full Self-Driving” system approved.

The discrepancy was spotted by Reuters, which claims that data Tesla gave to authorities in Sweden and the Netherlands grossly exaggerated the safety record of FSD in the United States.

Reuters reports that in a presentation meant for Swedish regulators, Tesla’s policy manager Ivan Komusanac claimed that Tesla’s FSD can travel over seven times farther between crashes than human drivers in the US. Using that claim as a jumping-off point, the presentation continued by claiming that Tesla’s FSD could have saved 32,000 lives and prevented 1.9 million injuries over an indeterminate period of time, the publication reports.

Independent researchers who saw the underlying data behind that claim say the numbers are wildly misleading, because they assume that every vehicle on the road would be replaced by a Tesla in FSD mode, semi trucks and motorcycles included.

As spokesperson for the European Transport Safety Council Dudley Curtis told Reuters, if Tesla wants to make outsized safety claims, it needs to “give the data ⁠to a university, have it independently verified by a qualified researcher, and then let’s talk.”
