Tesla has admitted a major defeat in its branding.

No longer will its notorious driving software be called “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” in Europe. After negotiations with Germany’s transportation ministry, it’s agreed to rename it “Tesla Assisted Driving,” in a more accurate representation of the software’s capabilities — and a symbolically humiliating submission by Elon Musk’s automaker.

The concession, however, will pave the way for Tesla to finally release FSD in European markets, so it’s a tradeoff that Musk will happily accept after years of campaigning to make it happen.

The rename has quickly taken effect. Across its European websites in countries including Germany, Spain, and even outside the European Union in the UK, all mentions of FSD now refer to “Tesla Assisted Driving,” Reuters reports. European users report that the new name is being shown in Tesla apps.

The rebranding came after German transport minister Steffen Bilger announced Tuesday that he would back approval of FSD across Europe, after a lengthy discussion process with the automaker.

“My goal is ​for Tesla drivers to be ⁠able to enjoy the benefits of ‘assisted driving’ throughout the EU without delay,” said Bilger.

The software that powers self-driving cars is no longer the domain of proprietary systems built by billion-dollar companies.

Open source assisted driving systems like Comma AI’s Openpilot have made it possible for anyone tech savvy enough to turn their set of wheels into a self-driving experiment. If you have $1,000 to spare and possess a willingness to serve as a lab rat in pursuit of automotive automation, you can buy a kit from Comma to retrofit your grocery getter with autonomous-driving ready sensors and cameras.

Two NVIDIA-branded trailers belonging to self-driving truck developer PlusAI were stolen from its Fremont, California, warehouse. According to WIRED, the thieves broke the trailers’ locks and drove them away, apparently expecting valuable hardware.

Instead, each trailer was carrying about 20,000 pounds of sand used as simulated cargo for autonomous truck testing. The trailers were later recovered in nearby Newark with all 40,000 pounds of sand still inside.

Ongelman muodostaa autojen pitkä käyttöikä. Suuri osa nykyisistä verkkoon kytketyistä autoista käyttää LTE:tä eli 4G:tä, eikä yhteyttä käytetä enää vain yksinkertaisiin telematiikkapalveluihin. Sen varassa toimivat esimerkiksi OTA-ohjelmistopäivitykset, sähköautojen dynaaminen reititys, reaaliaikaiset turvallisuuspalvelut sekä osa kuljettajaa avustaviin järjestelmiin liittyvistä verkkopalveluista.

Omdian mukaan mobiilioperaattorit alkavat sulkea LTE-verkkojaan vuodesta 2030 lähtien. Autoteollisuudelle aikataulu on hankala, sillä nyt myytävä auto voi olla liikenteessä vielä 2040-luvulla. Sen sisään rakennettua 4G-modeemia ei välttämättä ole suunniteltu vaihdettavaksi yhtä helposti kuin esimerkiksi älypuhelinta.

Suomalainen Unikie on vienyt autonomisen ajamisen aivan uuteen ympäristöön. Yhtiön tekniikalla autot ajoivat ilman kuljettajaa junavaunuihin Audin Ingolstadtin tehtaalla Saksassa. Unikien mukaan kyseessä oli maailman ensimmäinen henkilöautojen automaattisen junalastauksen demonstraatio.

Unikie esitteli automaattista junalastausta yhdessä Audin kanssa Ingolstadtissa, jossa sijaitsee autonvalmistajan suurin tehdas. Ratkaisu perustuu suomalaisyhtiön Marshalling-teknologiaan, jolla uusia autoja voidaan siirtää autonomisesti tehdas- ja logistiikka-alueilla.

Although we hope these protests remain peaceful, there’s always a chance things can turn violent when tensions are high. Should things go south, take comfort in the knowledge that a company in Japan has introduced a robot ambulance service. It’s probably more accurate to compare it with roadside assistance, as the goal is to repair the robot on-site. That said, if the fault is more serious, they can bring the damaged bot back to HQ. Of course, the major difference between this program and a traditional ambulance service is that they’ll be able to bring along a spare robot that can take over the patient’s job while repairs are being made. Should anyone start doing that for humans, expect a few more protests.
