When the chemical cells inevitably degraded, upgrading felt easier than navigating a specialized hardware repair. That era is over. The European Union just outlawed sealed, inaccessible batteries. Starting in 2027, every phone sold in the EU must feature a user-replaceable battery. You will not need a heat gun. You will not need an authorized technician. You just pop the back off. And because tech giants like Apple and Samsung cannot afford to abandon the European market, they are being forced to completely overhaul their global hardware designs. The countdown to the end of planned obsolescence has started.

Europe is bringing back a feature millions of phone users have been asking for: easier battery replacement.

Under new EU rules taking effect in 2027, many smartphones and portable devices will have to be designed so consumers can replace worn-out batteries more easily.

That doesn’t necessarily mean removable backs like the old days. But it does mean manufacturers must make batteries easier to remove without damaging the phone.

The goal is simple.

When a battery wears out, people shouldn’t have to replace the entire device.

Many phones are still fast, have great cameras, and work perfectly—except for an aging battery.

The EU wants to change that by making devices easier to repair, reducing electronic waste, and helping phones last longer.

After years of making phones thinner but harder to fix, manufacturers are now being pushed in the opposite direction.

The message is clear:

A dead battery shouldn’t mean a dead phone.

n what could be a big step forward for consumer rights, the Texas Senate recently unanimously voted to pass HB 2963, which references the “Diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of certain digital electronic equipment”. If signed by the governor, this would make Texas the ninth US state to enact such a law, and the seventh pertaining to consumer electronics. Interestingly, this bill saw anti-parts pairing language added, which is something that got stripped from the Oregon bill.
