ePanorama.net is a web site, which is dedicated to offer information on electronics found from the web. The this site is mainly targeted for professionals, hobbyist and students in the fields of electronics and computers or field somehow related to them. The indent of this site is to provide useful information freely and easily available to anyne who needs this information. So this site tries to pass some knowledge and useful projects to those people that might be interested.
There is also one commercial aim of this site. This site has some advertisements to pay for the cost of runnign this site: server space, computer costs, communications costs, etc. There is also hope to get some compensation for the countless of hours we have put to make this site what it is and constantly spend on keeping it up-to-date.
This site was created by Tomi Engdahl. ePanorama.net was originally born from Tomi Engdahl's Electronics Info Pages which where originally located at Helsinki University of Technology web server for many years (around 1994-1998).
After that the site has been upgraded to the form you see it nowadays as www.epanorama.net. Moving out from the non-commercial university server to commercially operated web server allowed to add all kind of new functionality not possible in the origianl server due different reasons.
This site is now operared by ELH Communications Ltd. It is owned and operared by the webmaster team: Tomi Engdahl, Tommi Lindeman and Mika Hytylinen.
As we want to continue to provide quality information for our viewers for free (as the original site did) and somehow to cover the expenses that this site creates for us, we run a couple of ad's on our site to keep this site available for everyone. We, however, aim to keep the amount as reasonable as possible.
This site is constanly maintained. The major updates to links etc. are generally made 2-3 times a month. Smaller updates are made more often.
The prefererred method to send new links is to use the Submit a site form. Another option is to mail the link to [email protected].
Expect at least several weeks delay before you get any requested link listed on the site. Sometimes adding links can take longer, so be patient.
Usually the better the link quality is and better description you give, faster you get it listed on the site. We make editorial choises what links to add to site and what not to add. To keep tha quality of the site good, we do not add all the links submitted to us, only the good ones we feel that are useful to be here.
One tip for the people making web pages: To get your site listed, submit your site when it is ready or in good condition with useful content. We are not planning to list sites that are just in the beginning and very much under construction, because it usually takes lots of time until such site becomes useable, and the experience has thought most of this kind of sites different people start making never make to become a good site.
We have our own custom link checking tool which checks the links on this site and finds out what are the non-working links. Those non-working links are then fixed manually.
There are numerous technologies that are used in this site. There are many servers that are used to run this web site. The reasons for using more than one server is reliabity (there is always a backup server is main server does not work), load balancing and several other reasons. Most of the servers are from different web hosting companies. The operating system on the servers is Linux and web server software is Apache.
There are various technologues used to make this web site. The main web pages on this site are duynamic HTML pages created using HTML and PHP scripting languages. The page style parameters are defined using cascading style sheets (CSS). The cgi-bin scripts are written using various scripting languages (Perl, bash etc.). We also use XML and different database technologies to implement some parts of this site.
The server which runs this site is constanly monitored and maintained by the web hosting company. It is very rare that it is down or otherwise non-operational. Most problems in accessing this site you might encounter is most propably caused by some communication problem from your computer to the server, not by a problem in the www.epanorama.net server itself. Usually those communications problems get corrected automatically within or in worst case within few hours. If you have hard time connect the main www.epanorama.net site, you can try to access the backup server located at http://www2.epanorama.net/ to temporarily access the site in the meantime you can't connect to main site at www.epanorama.net. The pages on that backup server are updated less often than the main site, so the page version you can find there can be somewhat older than the pages on the main site.
