Free mobile apps which use third-party services to display advertising consume considerably more battery life, a new study suggests.
Findings suggested that in one case 75% of an app’s energy consumption was spent on powering advertisements.
In the case of Angry Birds, research suggested that only 20% of the total energy consumption was used to actually play the game itself.
Of the rest, 45% is used finding out your location with which it can serve targeted advertising.
The tests were carried out by running the app over a 3G connection. The results noted that many apps leave connections open for up to 10 seconds after downloading information.
In Angry Birds, that brief period – described by researchers as a “3G tail” – accounted for over a quarter of the app’s total energy consumption.
Mr Pathak told the BBC that developers should perhaps think twice when utilising third-party advertising and analytics services in their app.

“We’re the No. 1 app in the Windows Phone app store, but it’s a big undertaking to support it, and you have to completely rewrite the application,” Peter Vesterbacka, chief marketing officer of the game’s maker, Rovio Entertainment Oy, said in an interview on Bloomberg Television. Rovio has no plans to release “Angry Birds Space” on the Windows Phone platform, he said.
Rovio started selling “Angry Birds Space” yesterday and expects to introduce four more Angry Birds games as well as a second game universe by the end of the year, Vesterbacka said.
Rovio has more than 300 employees, based in the same Espoo, Finland, office park as Nokia and the local Microsoft office. The new version of “Angry Birds,” which takes place in space with planetary gravity interfering with the birds’ flight paths, is available for Windows personal computers as well as Apple’s iPhone, iPad and Mac computers.

Rovio’s game Angry Birds has had 700 million downloads so far, but it’s much more than a game company.
Rovio’s new game, Angry Birds Space, launches tomorrow with a Walmart partnership for all merchandise related to Angry Birds at thousands of stores.
For the launch of Rovio’s new space game, it teamed up with NASA and National Geographic.
“It’s not just the launch of a game, it’s the launch of a franchise. It’s bigger than most movie launches in Hollywood. Rovio is one of the first brands to launch from the digital to the physical world,” he said.
Rovio turned down a $2 billion acquisition offer from Zynga last year. On stage, Vestabacka said the company’s role model is Disney, a $74 billion company, but that it’s goal is to be “much bigger.”
Vestabacka said if Walt Disney were getting his start today, he’d do it in games, not cartoons. Vestabacka says Disney’s company would probably be more like Rovio, not Zynga.
“Zynga is a game company. We stopped looking at ourselves as a game company. We sold 25 million plush toys last year. For us, it’s about making Angry Birds available everywhere,” Vesterbacka said.

Earlier this week, a report came out showing that some apps on Android use more than twice the power they actually need because they’re running ads. Angry Birds in particular was called out, with 70 percent of its power draw dedicated to uploading information and downloading ads. That stark fact may be part of the reason why Angry Birds Space, which was released yesterday, has both a free and a $.99 “premium” version in Google Play.
Although it might not be entirely fair to single out Angry Birds for battery life issues, the app is a common example simply because of how popular it has become. At the center of the Android app ecosystem is a fundamental problem that hasn’t yet been solved: paid apps get better battery life but simply don’t make much money in Google Play, while free-with-ads apps appear to be much more profitable but provide a much worse experience to the end user.
If Angry Birds is the cipher through which to understand this problem, the result doesn’t look good for Google’s store or for Android as a platform. Google Play simply isn’t making much money for developers who offer paid apps on Android. Rovio’s “Mighty Eagle,” Peter Vesterbacka, says that until now “it just hasn’t made sense” to offer a paid version of Angry Birds on Google Play:
The top developers offering paid downloads on Android, the numbers are single-digit millions at best. We are in the hundreds of millions on Android, so just it hasn’t made sense.
That’s why, until now, Rovio only offered the ad-based version on Android Market, though the company did offer a for-pay version on Amazon’s Android app store.
Nokia Siemens points out that there’s not an easy solution if you need to include ads:
Advertising delivery for Angry Birds is done by Google (Rovio cannot influence this), so any reduction of mobile ad-associated signaling will have to be done by Google, not Rovio.
Angry Birds has since switched to using Flurry for ads, but as the more recent study shows, it presents similar battery life problems
Vesterbacka is cautiously optimistic, at best, that Google Play will be able to create real revenue for paid apps.

“We’re going to roll out a weekly animation series later this year of shortform content,” said Rovio’s head of animation Nick Dorra, speaking at the MIPTV conference in Cannes.
The series will consist of 52 episodes lasting between two-and-a-half and three minutes each. “We’re going to roll it out on all possible devices,” said Dorra.
“We’re looking at building a video app for that, and we’re also looking at partnerships and so on… We want to be on all screens.”
Those partnerships include a deal with Samsung announced in January 2012 that involves an app for the company’s range of Smart TV internet-connected televisions.
Rovio acquired Finnish animation studio Kombo in June 2011 to help develop Angry Birds into more than just a gaming brand. The same month, it recruited former Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel as an adviser, sparking talk of a full Angry Birds film.

There are 12 rides at the park, including a roller coaster, a lighthouse and an adventure course, along with themed food areas. Visitors can also play the game on screens throughout the park.

The world’s leading suppliers of mobile games of the Rovio Entertainment Ltd., and playground equipment manufacturer Lappset have agreed on a global partnership for Angry Birds – parks can launch activity. The City of Espoo has left the co-operation, and a letter of intent according to Espoo carried out in five Angry Birds-activity park.

With Rovio’s Angry Birds hitting the billion-download mark recently, the Finnish developer has turned its attention to its next mobile game, revealed this week as Amazing Alex.
No birds. No pigs. No plush toy merchandise or movie tie-ins… just yet, anway.
Amazing Alex is an upgraded version of a 2011 iPad game Casey’s Contraptions from Snappy Touch & Mystery Coconut, IP Rovio recently acquired. The original game is no longer on the market.

Rovio has announced that Angry Birds Space has topped more than 100 million downloads, reaching the milestone in just 76 days.
Angry Birds Space has enjoyed a crazy amount of downloads in its first three months on sale. After launching on March 22, it hit 10 million downloads in three days and then 20 million within a week.
Rovio later shared that the game had passed 50 million downloads on all platforms, taking just 35 days to do so.
If that wasn’t enough, Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka also shared last month that downloads of all of its Angry Birds titles have topped 1 billion, with half a billion of those in the last 6 months alone.

Rovio might be looking beyond Angry Birds with the announcement of its new ‘Amazing Alex’ franchise but the company is set to launch a new bird-smashing racing-themed webgame called ‘Angry Birds Heikki’ on June 18.
Racing fans and Angry Birds purists will soon have another title to play, although it will be web-based.

First, in 2009, there was “Angry Birds.” Then came “Angry Birds Seasons,” which put the birds in Christmas and other holiday scenes. Next was “Angry Birds Rio,” set in South America. Finally, “Angry Birds Space” — set, well, in space.
You get the point. Minus a few changes in scenery, all these wildly popular games from the Finnish company Rovio are essentially the same: Players slingshot disgruntled, wingless birds across a screen, hoping to take down the cartoon pigs that stole their eggs.
Meanwhile, Rovio has marketed “Angry Birds” cookbooks, theme parks, sweatshirts, plush toys, soda brands and a soon-to-be TV show based on this bird-pig drama.
In a business sense, it has worked. The apps have been downloaded 1 billion times, and 30% of the company’s revenue comes from toys and other items. In 2011, Rovio reported earnings of $106 million, which impressed some financial analysts.
Heijari said Rovio has exhausted nearly all its options for marketing those now-ubiquitous ticked-off avians. Now the company has a team of designers working to create new prototype games that could be the company’s sophomore franchise hit.

Rovio came up with a nice idea how to make even more money out a game enjoyed by more than a hundred million mobile users on all platforms.
We have to admit that we did not see this one coming, but with the recent introduction of ten new levels in Angry Birds Space, you now have a chance to buy some additional birds.
