Innovation should be taught as a subject in European schools, according to Tibor Navracsics, the EU’s Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, who says that education can be a defining factor in the life of young scientists.

‘Education can be a decisive force, an engine in the socialisation of young scientists,’ he said. ‘It is important to have the institutions to support those young kids who have the aspiration to become a scientist.’

I think you are essentially right on this; the only I would contend with is the statement that “Too many innovator-colleagues are happy just to be left alone to innovate in isolation.” While this may be true in some cases, I remember that it my own situation, it was like pulling teeth to get the time to collaborate with others……until there is more encouragement from administrators via collegial planning time, don’t think there will be much change.
