Linux for School Exams in Finland

Slashdot informs (and I have seen it also on other news) that the Matriculation Examination Board of Finland (Upper Secondary School Exams) has opened an international hacking contest to find flaws and exploits in Digabi Live. Digabi Live is a Live Debian based operating system to be used in the all-digital final exams by the year 2016.

According to some twitter messages and YLE news some ways to hack have already been found. But they still want hackers to look for other ways: competitors should find a greater degree of vulnerability in the operating system.

Hackers found the gaps in the matriculation system

E-Student test was found unexpected gaps in the last month hackers attempted to break into a race against the system. The competition was organized Matriculation Examination Board (VHI).

    - Attack methods have been very resourceful, and they have come from abroad up. It has also become proposals such as that information security professionals do not necessarily come up, says Electrification Project Manager Matti Lattu.

A large part of the security vulnerabilities, however, was the VHI’s already known before the competition.

YTL will award the top three hacking descriptions with smart phone or tablet computer. The winners will be announced in early October.

Next, the system is tested professionals. Then get to decide on the technical details. It is still open, for example, to use the system is based on Linux or any other operating system.

Cheating is impossible to avoid completely. Proficient computer enthusiast can, for example to install inside the computer to another computer, where he can use the Internet during the test. However, fraud is very difficult, and it is possible to protect against quite well.

    - The house can always add more locks, but you can never be sure that there would be able to break through. Now we need to think about how much of locks, students are prepared to circumvent in order to use the experimental situation wrong, Lattu says.

    - Upper secondary school students indefinitely to tweak and experiment with the kinds of things a program note. This fall, the high school began the first ones to sign the matriculation examination in electronic format. The tests are to be allowed to use their own computers. The common use of the system is to ensure that all have a common examination status.
