TV in Finland 60 years

Finland’s first television broadcast was seen 60 years ago. In 1954 Finnish radio engineers were concerned about the situation that other Nordic countries was already TV test transmissions (England TV started in 1946 and USA 1947). In the autumn of 1954 in connection with the proposal for the  Radioinsinööriseura (North Fire Radio Engineering Society) was established a separate television club, the aim of which was to build a TV transmitter and start test broadcasts in Finland.

Television Club began a loud push to prepare the equipment for the first transmission. Technology students from Helsinki Teknillinen korkeakoulun (now part of  Aalto University) developed the necessary technology for television transmitters as part of their degree. Television technology was expensive. All radio companies, the Post and Telegraph Office and VTT donated parts. Construction of a TV transmitter began in November 1954. For the first time the transmitter with probe connected to the operation on 20 April 1955 for the first test transmission (at around 200 MHz frequency). The first public television broadcasting began on 24 May at 16.30 with one camera. Various places in the city was located 15 receivers.

After the success of test broadcasts continued and the technology was developed further. Regular television broadcasts began in the autumn of 1956 and got name TES-TV. The commercial channel was later changed to Tesvisio and began regular television broadcasts in 1958. In 1964 Yleisradio (national radio broadcasting company) buys the operation. TES television great merit was that it began broadcasting in our country, where the official expertise thought it was a dream of the future.

Today Finns love television. So much so that the front of the telly enjoy working for an average of three hours a day. TV creates role models, arouse emotions and allows the viewer to build their identity.  A variety of television content consumption is Sihvonen according rooted deep valuation difference: The more the opinion of entertainment, the worse media consumer you are easily perceived.  Since the beginning of meters for television it had already given an important educator role.
