“2021 is the year that everyone remembered that chip mattered,” said Wired Magazine. So far 2022 seems likely to be another fruitful year for the semiconductor industry.

World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) also has predicted that the global semiconductor market is projected to grow by 8.8 percent in 2022, to US$ 601 billion, driven by double-digit growth of the sensors and logic category. All regions and all product categories are expected to continue positive growth. Wafer foundry manufacturers sales likely to remain strong due to tight supply. 5G smartphone silicon content increase to drive demand for foundry service higher. Demand for digital transformation is here to stay, no sign of weakening for foundry service sales.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated digital transformation over the past two years. Work from home, virtual conference, and remote learning have driven up the demand for cloud computing, laptops, and servers, and hence the sales growth of related semiconductor products. Demands for CPU, GPU, AI accelerator (including FPGA) foundry services will remain strong in 2022 because trends such as virtual conferences, live streaming, and large capex of data centers are likely to stay. Long-term demands for customized chips in IoT, 5G infrastructure, HPC, and EV applications, like ADAS, autonomous driving, V2X, in-Vehicle Infotainment, will provide robust growth momentum for chip foundry services.

Chip crunch is not ending in 2022, as the lead time of some electronic components is stretching into 2023. Meanwhile, the increasing adoption of RISC-V open standard instruction set architecture is an important trend that can not be ignored. RISC-V market will double its size in 2022, compared to 2021, as it is attracting small and medium-size chip designers and manufacturers, especially those in China. RISC-V designs are now being used by Qualcomm, Samsung, Google, Microchip, Nvidia, and more.

    According to a report from Dealroom and the UK government, the UK has more high-growth companies than European peers includin 144 ‘unicorns’ and over 85,000 startups and scale-ups.

    The UK’s tech sector hit a combined market value of $1trn in 2022, according to data from Dealroom.

    This suggests since 2019 the UK’s tech sector has doubled in value from c.$500bn three years ago, despite the period’s well reported uncertainty through the covid pandemic, Brexit, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and mounting cost of living crisis.

    Research, which ultimately came from UK’s Digital Economy Council (part of DCMS), suggests this places the UK’s tech ecosystem at the top of the European tables and third after the US and China.

    Despite some rapid slowing of activity compared with 2021, during the past twelve months UK tech companies have raised more cash (£24bn), than France (£11.8bn) and Germany (£9.8 bn) combined. In the past five years, this suggests nearly $100bn (£97bn) of investment.

    Similarly, the combined value of Germany’s ($467.2bn) and France’s ($307.5bn) tech sectors fell short of the UK total by some way.

    Over three million people are now working in the UK, the research found, following a number of years of increasing investment volumes from venture capital and other institutional investors.

    About one in five of these unicorns is a fintech company, according to AltFi’s own research. This year the UK’s fintech sector raised about $10bn from investors, a third of the total.

    By using liquid helium as a cooling solution, the chip was able to break the 9GHz barrier and obtain a new world record.

    Overclocking experts Jon Sandström and Pieter Plaiser helped set the record at an Asus office in Taiwan earlier this month. Normally, the Core i9-13900K is designed to only offer max boost speeds at 5.8GHz. However, the team was able to achieve far higher clock speeds by using liquid helium to cool the CPU.

    Both Plaiser and Intel have published videos, documenting the achievement. The team first cooled the Intel processor to -196 degrees Celsius (-320.8 Fahrenheit) before bringing the temperatures further down to -260 degrees while trying to overclock the CPU.

    the chip was finally able to reach a speed of 9,008MHz over a single Performance Core in the processor while the temperatures were at -250 degrees. The overclocking site HWBot has since confirmed the feat.

    Overclockers typically use liquid nitrogen to achieve the insane clock speeds. However, Sandström chose liquid helium because the substance can reach even colder temperatures, thus giving the team a better chance of breaking the 9GHz barrier. But they only had enough liquid helium to attempt the overclocking for a span of a single hour.

    The Core i9-13900K chip broke the 9GHz barrier after setting the previous CPU overclocking record at 8.8GHz back in October. That achievement managed to take the crown from a ten-year-old record held by AMD’s FX-8350 chip, which overclocked the CPU to 8.79GHz back in 2012.

    Intel reasoned it could do what AMD and NVIDIA did by using a single, scalable GPU core (Xe) design and service multiple market segments such as gaming, notebooks (Xe-HPG), data center, and AI acceleration (Xe-HPC)—and they can, and are. But, those segments in Intel represent different fiefdoms with different ambitions, executive bonuses, and resource allocations.

    All GPU market segments had been placed under Raja Koduri’s leadership, and he pulled in Intel’s one-size-fits-all API—oneAPI. All of that can be accomplished at the device level, but it’s simply too much for any one person to manage three to five business centers that also involve companion CPU and network processors.

    Graphics Division Gets Divided

    In the second half of December 2022, Intel announced it was splitting up its graphics group to separately address the gaming and data-center markets by placing it under two other business units. Koduri, who was the executive vice president of the AXG business unit, will go back to his role as Intel’s chief architect for GPUs. A setup not unlike that of AMD and NVIDIA.

    Koduri’s business unit operated independently and labored to get its products to market on a schedule it had announced. It now has GPUs for consumer PCs and for accelerator chips used by data centers and supercomputers, as well as the Flex series for intelligent visual cloud/edge computing.

    Intel said it remains fully committed to its existing roadmap of Arc consumer discrete GPUs, and that the recently launched Alchemist series will be joining by its second-generation Battlemage and third-gen Celestial gaming GPUs as planned.

    Koduri will work on high-performance technical programs and lead the integration of GPU, CPU, and AI architectures that will show up in products like Falcon Shores and Intel’s zettascale ambitions.

    Linux as a primary operating system had been steadily climbing for the past 5 years. 2018 through 2021 saw steady growth with 23.2% , 25.6% , 26.6% , 25.3% , and finally in 2022 the usage was 40.23%. Linux usage was more than macOS in 2021, but only by a small margin. 2022 it is now 9% more than macOS.

    There is a slight difference between all respondents and professional developers, but that doesn’t take into account the 15% of WSL users on Windows or the 63% respondents that use Docker which uses a Linux VM on macOS and Windows.

    It’s safe to say more people use Linux as part of their development workflow than any other operating system.

    2022 also saw more than a million people gaming on Linux via the Steam deck. It has been quite a year of Linux desktop usage.

    GPU Microarchitecture Is Relatively Easy, Hardware Design Is Expensive

    Meanwhile, it should be noted that while there are a bunch of GPU developers, only two can actually build competitive discrete GPUs for PCs. That is perhaps because it is relatively easy to develop a GPU architecture, but it is truly hard to properly implement it and to design proper drivers.

    CPU and GPU microarchitectures are essentially at the intersection of science and art. They are sets of sophisticated algorithms that can be developed by rather small groups of engineers, but they might take years to develop, says Peddie.

    “[Microarchitectures] get done on napkins and white boards,” said Peddie. “[As for costs] if it is just the architects themselves, that [team] can be as low as one person to maybe three – four. [But] architecture of any type, buildings, rocket ships, networks or processors is a complicated chess game. Trying to anticipate where the manufacturing process and standards will be five years away, where the cost-performance tradeoffs are, what features to add and what to drop or ignore is very tricky and time-consuming work. […] The architects spend a lot of time in their head running what-if scenarios — what if we made the cache 25% bigger, what if we had 6,000 FPUs, should we do a PCIe 5.0 I/O will it be out in time.”

    SAN FRANCISCO — For more than a year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made a point of stoking fears about China. He’s told U.S. lawmakers that China “steals” American technology and played up nationalist concerns about threats from Chinese-owned rival TikTok.

    But now Meta has a growing problem: The social media service wants to transform itself into a powerhouse in hardware, and it makes virtually all of it in China.

    So the company is racing to get out.

    That transition has been harder than expected. While hardware giants like Apple have moved some production to places like India and Vietnam in recent years — responding to growing tariffs, former president Donald Trump’s trade war, and rising wages in China — Facebook has hit walls, say three people familiar with the discussions, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal conversations.

    Verizon’s in the process of kicking the remaining customers off its old network — the last one in the US.

    It’s well and truly curtains for 3G, one of the key technologies that helped usher in the age of the smartphone. Throughout December, Verizon has been disconnecting its customers who were still using the tech, cutting off their phones’ ability to use data, make calls, and send texts. It was the last major US carrier to do so — AT&T turned off its 3G service in February, and T-Mobile started winding its old networks down the month after.

    Verizon customers with 3G devices have had plenty of warning. It previously said the network would be going offline in 2019, but with one delay after another, the date has slowly been pushed back to December 31st, 2022. In the meantime, it’s sent people new, LTE-capable phones, as well as letters explaining exactly what’s going to happen. Verizon has told customers with 3G devices that their lines will be suspended starting the day before their December billing cycle begins, according to Fierce Wireless.

    Nokia ilmoitti tänään rikkoneensa kaksi optisen siirron ennätystä todellisissa kenttäkokeissa GlobalConnectin optisessa verkossa Euroopassa. Demonstraatiossa käytettiin Nokian kuudennen sukupolven PSE-6s-piirisarjaa, jonka avulla yllettiin 1,2 terabitin sekuntinopeuteen vain yhdellä aallonpituudella. Toisessa kokeessa data saatiin siirtymään 2019 kilometrin matka 800 gigabitin sekuntinopeudella.

    1,2 terabitin nopeuteen päästiin käyttämällä 150 gigahertsin taajuutta GlobalConnectin WDM-verkossa. GlobalConnect operoi Pohjois-Euroopan suurinta yhteenliitettyä kuituverkkoa, jossa on yli 150 000 kilometriä kuitua.

    Nokian PSE-6s -piirisarjalla päästään jopa 2,4 terabitin datanopeuteen, koska alusta tukee piirien välistä suoraa liitäntää. Tämän takia prosessorit voidaan ottaa käyttöön pareittain. Edellispolveen verrattuna ratkaisun siirtokyky kasvaa kolminkertaiseksi.

Langattomien moduulien sertifiointimäärä kasvoi edellisvuodesta selvästi ja oli nyt 238 eli käytännössä moduuleja sertifioitiin yhtä paljon kuin puhelimia.

    5G:n osuus sertifioitujen laitteiden määrässä jatkoi kasvuaan viime vuonna. Älypuhelimista 5G-tuki oli 49 prosentilla sertifioiduista laitteista. Kaikista laitteista 5G löytyi joka kolmannesta. Suurin osa 5G-laitteista tuki ns. toisen polven tekniikkaa eli SA/standalone-yhteyksiä.

    According to data presented by TradingPlatforms.com, global spending on PCs, tablets and mobile phones is expected to drop by 5% in 2023, following a 10% decline last year.
    Total Spending on IT Devices Slumped by Almost $150B in Two Years

    During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, employees and consumers had technology refresh of tablets, laptops, and mobile phones, mainly due to remote work and education. Still, according to a Gartner survey, the economic uncertainty and pandemic-caused layoffs had a huge impact on IT devices spending, which dropped by 2% to $697bn in 2020.

    In 2021, consumers and enterprises worldwide spent $807.6bn on PCs, tablets and mobile phones, showing a huge 15% growth year-over-year. Still, it was downhill from there, with IT devices now being the only IT market segment with a two-year decline.
