Web development trends 2020

Here are some web trends for 2020:

Responsive web design in 2020 should be a given because every serious project that you create should look good and be completely usable on all devices. But there’s no need to over-complicate things.

Web Development in 2020: What Coding Tools You Should Learn article gives an overview of recommendations what you learn to become a web developer in 2020.

You might have seen Web 3.0 on some slides. What is the definition of web 3 we are talking about here?
There seems to be many different to choose from… Some claim that you need to blockchain the cloud IOT otherwise you’ll just get a stack overflow in the mainframe but I don’t agree on that.

Information on the web address bar will be reduced on some web browsers. With the release of Chrome 79, Google completes its goal of erasing www from the browser by no longer allowing Chrome users to automatically show the www trivial subdomain in the address bar.

You still should target to build quality web site and avoid the signs of a low-quality web site. Get good inspiration for your web site design.

Still a clear and logical structure is the first thing that needs to be turned over in mind before the work on the website gears up. The website structure for search robots is its internal links. The more links go to a page, the higher its priority within the website, and the more times the search engine crawls it.

You should upgrade your web site, but you need to do it sensibly and well. Remember that a site upgrade can ruin your search engine visibility if you do it badly. The biggest risk to your site getting free search engine visibility is site redesign. Bad technology selection can ruin the visibility of a new site months before launch. Many new sites built on JavaScript application frameworks do not benefit in any way from the new technologies. Before you go into this bandwagon, you should think critically about whether your site will benefit from the dynamic capabilities of these technologies more than they can damage your search engine visibility. Well built redirects can help you keep the most outbound links after site changes.

If you go to the JavaScript framework route on your web site, keep in mind that there are many to choose, and you need to choose carefully to find one that fits for your needs and is actively developed also in the future.
JavaScript survey: Devs love a bit of React, but Angular and Cordova declining. And you’re not alone… a chunk of pros also feel JS is ‘overly complex’

Keep in mind the recent changes on the video players and Google analytics. And for animated content keep in mind that GIF animations exists still as a potential tool to use.

Keep in mind the the security. There is a skill gap in security for many. I’m not going to say anything that anyone who runs a public-facing web server doesn’t already know: the majority of these automated blind requests are for WordPress directories and files. PHP exploits are a distant second. And there are many other things that are automatically attacked. Test your site with security scanners.
APIs now account for 40% of the attack surface for all web-enabled apps. OWASP has identified 10 areas where enterprises can lower that risk. There are many vulnerability scanning tools available. Check also How to prepare and use Docker for web pentest . Mozilla has a nice on-line tool for web site security scanning.

The slow death of Flash continues. If you still use Flash, say goodbye to it. Google says goodbye to Flash, will stop indexing Flash content in search.

Use HTTPS on your site because without it your site rating will drop on search engines visibility. It is nowadays easy to get HTTPS certificates.

Write good content and avoid publishing fake news on your site. Finland is winning the war on fake news. What it’s learned may be crucial to Western democracy,

Think to who you are aiming to your business web site to. Analyze who is your “true visitor” or “power user”. A true visitor is a visitor to a website who shows a genuine interest in the content of the site. True visitors are the people who should get more of your site and have the potential to increase the sales and impact of your business. The content that your business offers is intended to attract visitors who are interested in it. When they show their interest, they are also very likely to be the target group of the company.

Should you think of your content management system (CMS) choice? Flexibility, efficiency, better content creation: these are just some of the promised benefits of a new CMS. Here is How to convince your developers to change CMS.

Did you know that if a spider creates a web at a place?
The place is called a website

    https://hackaday.com/2021/09/16/so-why-are-hyperlinks-blue-anyway/

It’s important to remember that the idea of hyperlinks predates the invention of color monitors, which thickens the plot a bit. But the pivotal point seems to be Windows 3.1, released April 6th, 1992, when hyperlink blue becomes a navigational and interactive color. A year later, the April 12, 1993 release notes for Mosaic include a bullet that becomes the point of origin for blue hyperlinks:

Changed default anchor representations: blue and single solid underline for unvisited, dark purple and single dashed underline for visited.Mosaic release notes

Around the same time, the Cello browser was developed at Cornell Law, which also used blue hyperlinks. So the blue hyperlink concept was arguably browser-agnostic even before Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer came along.

The writer speculates that blue was chosen to stand out against black and white once color monitors took over, and that seems legit to us.

    https://puheenvuoro.uusisuomi.fi/jarno-koskinen/maalittamisesta-vahingonkorvausvastuu/

Maalittaminen, eli ihmisten usuttaminen toisen henkilön kimppuun on some-aikakauden ehkä irvokkaimpia ilmiötä.

As social media and technology companies face criticism for not doing enough to stem the flow of misleading information on their platforms, a sizable portion of Americans continue to turn to these sites for news. A little under half (48%) of U.S. adults say they get news from social media “often” or “sometimes,” a 5 percentage point decline compared with 2020, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted July 26-Aug. 8, 2021.1

Nearly a third of Americans regularly get news on Facebook

When it comes to where Americans regularly get news on social media, Facebook outpaces all other social media sites.

asking users of 10 social media sites whether they regularly get news there, about a third of U.S. adults (31%) say they get news regularly on Facebook, while about one-in-five Americans (22%) say they regularly get news on YouTube. Twitter and Instagram are regular news sources for 13% and 11% of Americans, respectively.

Other social media sites are less likely to be regular news sources. Fewer than one-in-ten Americans say they regularly get news from Reddit (7%), TikTok (6%), LinkedIn (4%), Snapchat (4%), WhatsApp (3%) and Twitch (1%).

The percentage of Americans who get news regularly from these sites has remained largely unchanged since 2020, though the share who regularly get news on Facebook has declined slightly (36% in 2020 vs. 31% in 2021).

The internet, as a reading experience, is mostly terrible. The heavy pages riddled with ads and trackers, the unexpected pop-ups, the bespoke designs that in too many places end up broken. Over the years, many have tried to fix this problem — Google with AMP, Facebook with Instant Articles — and none have succeeded. It can often feel like things just keep getting worse.

Ben Springwater certainly felt like things were getting worse. In 2016, he was working at Nextdoor, lamenting with one of his colleagues, Rob Mackenzie, that reading on the internet was so complicated. The reading experience was part of the problem, but so was the internet’s unlimited supply of stuff. “It completely boggles the mind that so much of this stuff is really excellent, this life-changing stuff we could read,” Springwater said. But there’s only so much time in the day. “So we have filters: We go to Twitter, we check the headlines or what comes into our inbox. But those decisions for most of us are really suboptimal, relative to the potential of what we could be reading.”

CNN said it has restricted access to its Facebook Inc. FB -3.66% pages in Australia following a ruling from that country’s high court that makes news organizations legally liable for comments on their Facebook posts.

Facebook users in Australia will no longer have access to major pages run by the network, including its primary Facebook page, its CNN International page and pages dedicated to its shows, a CNN spokeswoman said.

CNN, a unit of AT&T Inc.’s WarnerMedia, appears to be the first major U.S. media organization to publicly restrict Australian access to its Facebook pages following a ruling this month from the High Court of Australia that made news organizations legally liable for comments on their Facebook pages.

The court ruled that media companies facilitated and encouraged comments from users by creating public Facebook pages and posting content on them. According to the court, media companies are responsible for any defamatory content that appears on them because they are considered publishers of the comments.

After that ruling, CNN asked Facebook whether it would consider helping news organizations disable comments on all of their pages in Australia to avoid potential legal risks, according to a person close to CNN. Facebook declined to disable all comments on CNN’s pages in Australia and instead offered to help CNN disable comments on its posts one by one, the person said.

The app has over 2 billion active monthly users. It generates a huge revenue of $15.15 billion. The company was founded in 2005.

The German-language channel of Russia Today (RT) has been blocked by YouTube due to allegations of misinformation on coronavirus. Now as a subtle revenge, Russia has threatened to ban YouTube in the country.

RT is Russia’s state-controlled television network and very popular in the Putin-led country. RT was recently alleged to be spreading misinformation related to coronavirus, especially in Germany.

The channel had received one strike by YouTube earlier. As a result of this the media house was not allowed to post any new content on the video platform for at least a week.

However, RT decided to play it smart and use a loophole. The channel used an alternate account titled “Der Fehlende Part” to post content.

YouTube’s action has angered RT and the Editor-in-Chief, Margarita Simonyan, had called this a “real media war declared by the state of Germany to the state of Russia”.

She also reported that “earlier, Luxembourg refused to grant us a broadcasting license, citing the opinion of the German authorities.”

    https://techcrunch.com/2021/09/29/what-is-web3-disrupt-ben-rubin/?tpcc=ecfb2020

Content creators (arguably either a special echelon of influencers or anyone who posts online) are slowly siphoning off some of the power that social media companies have wielded for years. Meanwhile, decentralization is sweeping worlds like finance and art, threatening existing orders and pointing toward a future defined by alternative currencies and digital collectibles. Those trends are bound to converge sooner rather than later, and in some corners of the social internet, it’s already beginning to show.

These days, everyone seems to be abuzz about decentralization. As with any nascent tech trend on the horizon, a lot of jargon gets thrown around. Within the DeFi (decentralized finance) and NFT (non-fungible token) communities, Web3 is the term du jour that captures the revolutionary potential that decentralized networks hold for the future of the internet.

    Mitä on server-side tagging?
    https://www.hopkins.fi/artikkelit/mita-on-server-side-tagging/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paidsocial&utm_campaign=evergreen-artikkelit-liikenne-kiinnostukset&utm_content=sstagging-pagepost&fbclid=IwAR017zG3483g16SLtBdUpjtBnx7xfMddqKspvJI4Qlb6kffAoICEqvok_ic

Server-side tagging on uusi teknologia, jossa seurantakoodit suoritetaan palvelimella (server-side) – eikä selaimessa.

Vanha tapa on ajaa nämä web-analytiikan ja mainosjärjestelmien koodinpätkät käyttäjän selaimessa (client side), mikä hidastaa sivujen latausta ja lyhentää evästeiden elinkää.

Pidempi keskimääräinen elinikä 1. osapuolen evästeille on server-side taggingin keskeisimpiä hyötyjä.

Google lanseerasi vuonna 2020 mahdollisuuden ajaa Google Tag Manager -säilöjä palvelimella (server-side). Koska Google Tag Manager on jo valmiiksi ylivoimaisesti suosituin tägienhallinnan järjestelmä, sen server-side-versio saavuttaa luultavasti saman aseman.

Käytännössä alkuun pääsee sillä, että Google Tag Manageria varten järjestetään erillinen pilvipalvelin. Siihen ohjataan A/AAAA DNS-tietuein oman verkkotunnuksen alidomain, kuten seuranta.hopkins.fi, jotta seuranta tapahtuu 1. osapuolen kontekstissa.

Helpointa on ostaa palvelintila Google Cloud Platform -palvelusta.

Vahvasti käyttökokemukseen panostaville server-side tagging on yksi osa laajempaa sivuston nopeuttamisen kokonaisuutta.

Facebookin käyttökatko näytti, miten haavoittuvaa yhden somejätin varaan rakennettu viestintä on.

Aalto-yliopiston professorilta raju näkemys some-katkosta: “Facebook on länsimaiden suurin uhka demokratialle”
Yhteisöpalvelu Facebookin poikkeuksellisen pitkä käyttökatkos sai monet mietteliäiksi.
    https://www.iltalehti.fi/digiuutiset/a/757ad4f0-845e-4821-84b2-a7b2c2f4a63e

Facebookin muutaman tunnin käyttökatkos oli tietoverkkotekniikan professorin mielestä hyvä asia.
Hänen mukaansa Facebook on suuri uhka länsimaiselle demokratialle.

Kyse on ennen kaikkea viihteestä.

Professorin mielestä nimenomaan Facebook on uhka länsimaiselle demokratialle.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on putting profit before safety: ‘That’s just not true’
    https://www.zdnet.com/article/facebook-ceo-mark-zuckerberg-on-putting-profit-before-safety-thats-just-not-true/
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has publicly addressed claims that the social media giant prioritises profit over safety and wellbeing is “just not true”. “We care deeply about issues like safety, wellbeing, and mental health. It’s difficult to see coverage that misrepresents our work and our motives. At the most basic level, I think most of us just don’t recognize the false picture of the company that is being painted, ” Zuckerberg wrote in note to Facebook employees that he publicly posted on his Facebook page.

Firefox 93 Improves Protection Against Tracking, Insecure Downloads
    https://www.securityweek.com/firefox-93-improves-protection-against-tracking-insecure-downloads

Mozilla this week released Firefox 93 to the stable channel with several security improvements, including better privacy protections, patches, and anti-tracking capabilities.

Starting with Firefox 93, the browser blocks insecure HTTP downloads on encrypted (HTTPS) pages, to keep users safe from potentially unwanted or even malicious downloads.

Given that data transmitted over HTTP isn’t protected, attackers able to intercept that data could not only view it, but also tamper with it. Thus, attackers could potentially replace files downloaded over HTTP with malicious ones, which could lead to full system compromise.

Firefox 93 now blocks such insecure file downloads and prompts the user to stop the download and remove the file, while also offering the choice to continue with the download.

The browser now also blocks downloads in sandboxed iframes, to prevent instances where malicious content could initiate a drive-by download from the sandbox. Thus, unless the sandboxed content has the ‘allow-downloads’ attribute, Firefox will prevent such downloads.

After disabling older iterations of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol last year, Firefox now closes the door on 3DES, a popular encryption algorithm that is nothing more than an adaptation of the Data Encryption Standard.

Sources: Facebook has begun limiting internal info sharing and paused product rollouts in recent days as employees conduct “reputational reviews” — Social-media company puts hold on some work for existing products while it addresses blowback from whistleblower, lawmakers

Social-media company puts on hold some work for existing products while it addresses blowback from whistleblower, lawmakers

Facebook Inc. has delayed the rollout of new products in recent days, people familiar with the matter said, amid media reports and congressional hearings related to a trove of internal documents showing harms from its platforms.

Executives at the social-media company also have put a hold on some work on new and existing products while more than a dozen people are involved in conducting “reputational reviews” to examine how Facebook may be criticized and to ensure products don’t adversely impact children, the people said.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said he has asked leaders to do deep dives on work across the company over the next few days and committed to continuing research into the company’s products.

“I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on the kinds of experiences I want my kids and others to have online, and it’s very important to me that everything we build is safe and good for kids,” he wrote.

Fight disinformation. Get a daily recap of the facts that matter. Sign up for the free Mother Jones newsletter.

Leaks are generally good. Transparency of powerful institutions is generally good. The person, or people, who provide them are generally doing a noble thing. Frances Haugen, the former Facebook employee who leaked a damning trove of the social media’s internal documents, is no exception.

The files that she helped bring to light in the Wall Street Journal show Facebook’s own knowledge and deception about matters that the company’s critics had long suspected. Its applications contributed to teens’ mental health problems—something the company knew but misled Congress about. Facebook said its rules were equally applied but that Facebook privately drew special carveouts for high-profile figures. The company rolled back protections that it had put in place after the election, just in time to help the spread of disinformation and violent rhetoric ahead of the January 6 Capitol riot. The list goes on.

During a hearing with members of the Senate Commerce Committee on Tuesday, senators asked Haugen several times for suggestions about what to do. Haugen’s answers included some incredibly weak tea:

Establish a Facebook policy “on how to share information and research from inside the company to appropriate oversight bodies like Congress.”
Have the company reinstitute “soft interventions that were implemented to protect the 2020 election,” akin to Twitter’s prompt for users to read a link before sharing it.
Create a “regulatory home [within the Federal government] where someone like me can do a tour of duty after working at place like this, and have a place to work on things like regulation,” because, as Haugen argued in the hearing, the people who can work on these issues best are those who have been inside the companies.

As Daniel Hanley, an analyst at the left-leaning think-tank Open Markets, pointed out on Twitter, none of these solutions would change the structures that produced Facebook and all of the problems it has created. Indeed, she specifically argued against structural solutions like breaking up Facebook.

Facebook’s own lobbyists couldn’t have come up with a better answer than the one Haugen proposed about having former Facebook staffers work in a special government unit that would regulate Facebook. This is known as a “revolving door”—a corporate dream and a nightmare for everyone else.

If you believe that Facebook is producing significant harm, the solutions that follow should probably be significant as well. As Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight for the Future, told me, rectifying Facebook’s invasive privacy practices could require “a privacy law strong enough to effectively kill Facebook’s current business model.”

“It’s hard to directly regulate algorithms, but Congress can make it illegal for companies like Facebook and YouTube to harvest the massive amount of data they use to fuel those algorithms,” Greer suggested, referring to Haugen’s warnings on how Facebook’s algorithms lead people to harmful content.

Facebook back online after more than 6 hours, Mark Zuckerberg loses $6 billion as result of outage
    A meme-heavy day
    https://www.techspot.com/news/91574-facebook-back-online-after-more-than-6-hours.html

What just happened? In a classic case of never thinking things can get any worse, under-pressure Facebook and its suite of apps have just had their worst outage since 2019. It took almost six hours for the issues to be resolved, during which time the internet was flooded with memes, and Mark Zuckerberg lost over $6 billion.

The problems started on Monday just before noon ET when people began reporting that they couldn’t access Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or WhatsApp—even the Oculus app and website were impacted. It would be almost six hours before regular service resumed.

The problems didn’t only affect Facebook’s apps. The company said it also impacted many of its internal tools and communication systems. There were reports of employees unable to get into Facebook’s offices because their passcards weren’t working. Several told The Verge that they had to resort to using their Outlook email accounts to communicate with colleagues. Those who tried to log into work tools such as Google Docs using their email addresses also found they were locked out. The problems meant diagnosing and fixing the problem took even longer.

Facebook has now apologized for the outage and explained what went wrong. It says a configuration change to the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between the company’s data centers was to blame. Cloudflare senior vice president Dane Knecht tweeted that Facebook’s border gateway protocol (BGP) routes, which find the best path to deliver traffic, were suddenly “withdrawn from the internet.”
