Web development trends 2020

Here are some web trends for 2020:

Responsive web design in 2020 should be a given because every serious project that you create should look good and be completely usable on all devices. But there’s no need to over-complicate things.

Web Development in 2020: What Coding Tools You Should Learn article gives an overview of recommendations what you learn to become a web developer in 2020.

You might have seen Web 3.0 on some slides. What is the definition of web 3 we are talking about here?
There seems to be many different to choose from… Some claim that you need to blockchain the cloud IOT otherwise you’ll just get a stack overflow in the mainframe but I don’t agree on that.

Information on the web address bar will be reduced on some web browsers. With the release of Chrome 79, Google completes its goal of erasing www from the browser by no longer allowing Chrome users to automatically show the www trivial subdomain in the address bar.

You still should target to build quality web site and avoid the signs of a low-quality web site. Get good inspiration for your web site design.

Still a clear and logical structure is the first thing that needs to be turned over in mind before the work on the website gears up. The website structure for search robots is its internal links. The more links go to a page, the higher its priority within the website, and the more times the search engine crawls it.

You should upgrade your web site, but you need to do it sensibly and well. Remember that a site upgrade can ruin your search engine visibility if you do it badly. The biggest risk to your site getting free search engine visibility is site redesign. Bad technology selection can ruin the visibility of a new site months before launch. Many new sites built on JavaScript application frameworks do not benefit in any way from the new technologies. Before you go into this bandwagon, you should think critically about whether your site will benefit from the dynamic capabilities of these technologies more than they can damage your search engine visibility. Well built redirects can help you keep the most outbound links after site changes.

If you go to the JavaScript framework route on your web site, keep in mind that there are many to choose, and you need to choose carefully to find one that fits for your needs and is actively developed also in the future.
JavaScript survey: Devs love a bit of React, but Angular and Cordova declining. And you’re not alone… a chunk of pros also feel JS is ‘overly complex’

Keep in mind the recent changes on the video players and Google analytics. And for animated content keep in mind that GIF animations exists still as a potential tool to use.

Keep in mind the the security. There is a skill gap in security for many. I’m not going to say anything that anyone who runs a public-facing web server doesn’t already know: the majority of these automated blind requests are for WordPress directories and files. PHP exploits are a distant second. And there are many other things that are automatically attacked. Test your site with security scanners.
APIs now account for 40% of the attack surface for all web-enabled apps. OWASP has identified 10 areas where enterprises can lower that risk. There are many vulnerability scanning tools available. Check also How to prepare and use Docker for web pentest . Mozilla has a nice on-line tool for web site security scanning.

The slow death of Flash continues. If you still use Flash, say goodbye to it. Google says goodbye to Flash, will stop indexing Flash content in search.

Use HTTPS on your site because without it your site rating will drop on search engines visibility. It is nowadays easy to get HTTPS certificates.

Write good content and avoid publishing fake news on your site. Finland is winning the war on fake news. What it’s learned may be crucial to Western democracy,

Think to who you are aiming to your business web site to. Analyze who is your “true visitor” or “power user”. A true visitor is a visitor to a website who shows a genuine interest in the content of the site. True visitors are the people who should get more of your site and have the potential to increase the sales and impact of your business. The content that your business offers is intended to attract visitors who are interested in it. When they show their interest, they are also very likely to be the target group of the company.

Should you think of your content management system (CMS) choice? Flexibility, efficiency, better content creation: these are just some of the promised benefits of a new CMS. Here is How to convince your developers to change CMS.

Teemua haastatteli Aina tulee sanomista LIVE -webinaarissa Jaakko Kuivalainen.

Digimarkkinointia on perinteisesti tutkittu käyttäytymispolkuja seuraamalla.

Markkinoinnin vaikuttavuutta on mitattu vuosikymmeniä erilaisilla ennustemalleilla.

OMG:ssa on mitattu digimarkkinointia itseoppivilla aikasarjamalleilla datamassoista. Mittaustavassa haetaan korrelaatiota näkyvyyteen ja toivottuun lopputulokseen. Toinen tutkimusmetodi on paneelidata, jossa tutkitaan silmänliikekameroilla mitä ihmiset huomaavat.

Formaatit kannattaa asemoida hyvin sisällön yhteyteen sopiviksi.

”Sisällöistä ylivoimaisesti tehokkain on liikkuva kuva. Sen käytöllä on suora yhteys parempaan huomaamiseen”, Neiglick vinkkaa.

Digimarkkinoinnissa muistijäljen aikaansaaminen vaatii toistoa, viestien variointia ja tarinan kerronnan osaamista.

Hakukoneissa suurin osa budjetista menee olemassa olevien asiakkaiden aktivointiin.

”Eli myynti olisi tapahtunut joka tapauksessa. Kannattaa optimoida uusasiakashankinnan puolta”, Neiglick neuvoo.

In 2021, sharing content is easier than ever. Our lingua franca is visual: memes, infographics, TikToks. Our references cross borders and platforms, shared and remixed a hundred different ways in minutes. Digital culture is collective by default

But as the internet reaches its “dirty 30s,” what happens when pieces of digital culture that have been saved, screenshotted, and reposted for years need to retire? Let’s dig into the story of one of these artifacts: The Lenna image.

The Lenna image may be relatively unknown in pop culture today, but in the engineering world, it remains an icon.

Lena Forsén, the real human behind the Lenna image, was first published in Playboy in 1972. Soon after, USC engineers searching for a suitable test image for their image processing research sought inspiration from the magazine. They deemed Lenna the right fit and scanned the image into digital, RGB existence

Totuudellisuus on radikaali ajatus, kun puhutaan markkinoinnista. Se toimii kuitenkin paremmin kuin voisi äkkiseltään kuvitella, kirjoittaa the other danish guyn Tommi Lähde.

After seeing WordPress top the most dreaded platform on Stack Overflow’s Developer Survey for two years in a row (2019 and 2020), a few weeks ago we explored why developers hate using the CMS.

Interestingly enough, we ended up getting some impassioned responses from developers who love WordPress. Just visit some of the many Quora and Reddit threads about the CMS and you’ll find die-hard WordPress haters and lovers battling it out.

We decided to dig deeper into this story. What’s actually fueling this rift within the developer community and what could WordPress do to appease Stack Overflow respondents?

What WordPress fans love about the CMS: It’s built for everyone
When WordPress started out in 2003, it was built to help bloggers and small businesses develop websites without the need for coding skills. Rather than having to build a site from scratch or hire an expensive agency, these individuals and small teams could simply choose from a number of beautifully designed ‘theme’ templates, customize, and go.

The success of this much simpler and more accessible model held promise for users who wanted to spread their reach. There are now over 4,000 themes to choose from.

The problem: It’s become a victim of its own success
The accessibility WordPress was built to offer may just be the cause of the divide we now see within the developer community. With 64 million users across the globe, O’Leary believes:

They’re really the victims of their own success. You can never fully please anyone at that level of market penetration.

The problem is, with the amount of sites that are run on WordPress, the majority of them will be running on the traditional way of doing things, making it difficult to introduce really far reaching updates without alienating a large group of clients. With the constant and high speed rate of innovation in the dev community, O’Leary expects the gap between old and new technology to only get wider:

Furthermore, while having such an open system has its upsides, it also means there isn’t a defined standard for code or code quality.

So can WordPress actually keep the accessibility its fans love while modernizing its offering for frustrated devs?
If you read our previous article, you’ll remember Dominik Angerer, CEO of headless CMS platform Storyblok, shared some of the difficulties he and his cofounder faced when working with traditional CMS systems.

Catching up with him again, he shared that he believes most legacy systems (including WordPress, Squarespace, Drupal and others) are now transitioning towards a headless approach.

In his view, this will really help them modernize their offering for today’s users:

WordPress is actively moving into an API-based approach. This will allow developers to use any technology they want to use and gives them more control over technology choice, update cycles, and even security benefits.

We’ve talked about how a bad WordPress project can completely lock you into a technology stack that you can’t update. In general WordPress is actually moving towards a headless direction themselves. Adapting to the API-based approach and with a hosted version you don’t have to worry as much about updating or having to use some of the old security hotfixes of the past.

Whilst WordPress has made a huge push towards the adoption of a new editor experience called “Gutenberg” — built on the back of React — it’s fair to say there has been a somewhat mixed, even polarized reaction to it.

“If it were my call, I think fully splitting the legacy WordPress infrastructure from new developments would be a great start,” said O’Leary.

“A legacy WordPress could still exist, enabling existing sites to be maintained with the traditional implementation and without needing to adopt an approach which doesn’t suit all use cases. Ideally, there could be a newer, more headless-centric version based around modern approaches (headless/jamstack frontends) and without the clutter or bloat that can often come with themes.”

Newspapers all over the country have been quietly filing antitrust lawsuits against Google and Facebook for the past year, alleging the two firms monopolized the digital ad market for revenue that would otherwise go to local news.

Why it matters: What started as a small-town effort to take a stand against Big Tech has turned into a national movement, with over 200 newspapers involved across dozens of states.

“The intellectual framework for this developed over the last 3-4 years,” said Doug Reynolds, managing partner of HD Media, a holding company that owns several West Virginia newspapers, including the Charleston Gazette-Mail.
Reynolds, along with a group of lawyers, filed the first newspaper lawsuit of this kind in January in West Virginia.

Meta (formerly Facebook) has found a new way to avoid the app stores’ commissions on in-app purchases with the launch of a new website where people can buy “Stars” — the virtual items that allow fans to express their support for favorite creators during Facebook videos and livestreams. Typically, Stars are bought as in-app purchases on mobile devices where they’re subject to a revenue share with the app store platform provider — meaning, Apple or Google. But when fans purchase Stars via the new Facebook website, they’ll use Facebook Pay, not Apple or Google’s payment mechanisms.

This will allow fans to “get more Star for their money at lower rates,” notes a Facebook announcement.

The Guardian now has 1 million people that pay for its digital content on a recurrent basis, Axios has learned. This time three years ago, that number was 534,000.

Why it matters: It’s an impressive feat for a company that doesn’t have a paywall.

The Guardian has a supporter model, in which readers can either subscribe to its apps or make a recurring financial contribution.
More than 1 million people subscribe to its apps for a fee or chose to make a recurring financial contribution. A subscriber fee is £5.99 pounds monthly and £99 pounds annually.
Supporters can also make a one-off contribution, but those aren’t tallied as a part of the 1 million number.

The big picture: About half of the 1 million people who pay for The Guardian’s digital content are from outside of the UK and over 220,000 come from North America.

Guardian launched its U.S. site in 2011 and its Australian site in 2013.
In total, over 1.6 million people pay for the Guardian. That includes the 1 million people who pay recurrent amounts for its digital content, over 100,000 print subscribers, and roughly 500,000 people who give one-off donations.

Leaked docs: Facebook has not developed Finnish-language automated moderation for hate speech and other content, and employs just 11 moderators based in Berlin

    Facebook failing at Finnish moderation
    https://yle.fi/news/3-12238371

A data leak reveals Facebook is unable to control hate speech in minority languages like Finnish.

A Facebook data leak has revealed that Finnish-language moderation rests with a handful of moderators, eleven people working in Berlin. While the social media giant praises the efficiency of its automated moderation tools, documents obtained by Yle show that these are of little use when it comes to small languages like Finnish.

The company’s ability to detect hate speech is not as good as Facebook has led users to believe. Moderation for languages like Finnish is often half-baked, a fact apparent in thousands of pages of leaked internal Facebook documents obtained by Yle.

These documents show that Facebook has not developed Finnish-language automated moderation for things like hate speech, violence and nudity.

TikTok ousts Google to become favourite online destination
    https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-59768617

Move over Google, TikTok is the world’s new most popular online destination.

The viral video app gets more hits than the American search engine, according to Cloudflare, an IT security company.

The rankings show that TikTok knocked Google off the top spot in February, March and June this year, and has held the number one position since August.

Last year Google was first, and a number of sites including TikTok, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Netflix were all in the top 10.

Cloudfare said it tracks data using its tool Cloudflare Radar, which monitors web traffic.

PHP, one of the most popular programming languages, is to be supported by the creation of a new foundation to ensure its future.

PHP, created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995, is a popular language to learn in part because it is used in about 78% of the world’s websites, according to W3Techs data.

Czech-based IDE maker JetBrains announced the new PHP Foundation this week. It’s comprised of a handful of companies that will help fund PHP’s future development, including Automattic, Laravel, Acquia, Zend, Private Packagist, Symfony, Craft CMS, Tideways, and PrestaShop, as well as JetBrains.

Chromium, the underlying code of Google Chrome, is at the heart of many more things than you might think.

    Viewer comments:

I also remember reading a story about how an Edge dev mentioned one of the reasons why they moved to chromium was cause Google was breaking stuff their browser did via Youtube updates.

The original Microsoft Edge absolutely sucked when it came to compatibility with Google-owned websites, and I theorized that Google could’ve been intentionally designing their sites to work poorly on Edge so that users would be motivated to switch to Chrome.

Yep, and sadly Microsoft has to give in since they already struggling to have EdgeHTML gain more developer support and markets hare to back it up. They could’ve have gone to same Firefox engine, but Chromium is just a stronger and natural choice if they wish to deal less with Google shenanigans, even then sometimes Google sites break but alot less compared to when they use their own engine. Even giants give in from another giant, worse on that there will be huge loss in competition.

Chromes html was faster anyways so I see this as a total win.

Developers will always go for the common denominator and it’s hard to code for standards and expect everything to run smoothly on every browser. Chrome is kinda like the internet explorer of today although the saving grace is chromium is open source.

Firefox engine is not called quantum it’s called gecko – Firefox quantum was an update that completely overhauled gecko to match chromium’s speed

In 2017, we completely rebuilt our browser engine (called Quantum), to ensure Firefox could compete with other major browsers. Can’t be called Gecko as it is very different.

They probably rebranded Gecko as Quantum. I mean, Gecko is now called Quantum on their website (FAQ section).

No, It is not. I find it faster than Vivaldi, which is based on Chromium. On and modern Desktop cpu you won’t notice difference. I am using Firefox as my main browser. I use Chrome for testing only.

White House ‘not a really active presence’ amid legislative efforts to rein in social media and other internet platforms

Lawmakers say 2022 is shaping up as a pivotal year in their efforts to tighten regulations on social media and other internet platforms—and are pushing President Biden to come off the sidelines.

Democrats and Republicans are working on half a dozen or more major categories of legislation dealing with online privacy and children’s safety, the transparency of companies’ data-collection practices, accountability for content posted on social media and market dominance by a handful of major players.

But these and other proposals face potentially fierce opposition from big technology companies, as well as partisan differences between Republicans and Democrats. While members of both parties are critical of Big Tech, Democrats often have favored tighter restrictions—for example, on harmful content—while Republicans typically have advocated lighter-touch approaches, and have opposed measures that could restrict speech.

Google Is No Longer The World’s Most Popular Website

Step aside, Google, you are no longer the world’s most popular website. Searching for stuff is sooooooo 2020.

According to Cloudflare Radar’s popularity ranking, the tech giant has been knocked down to the second most popular domain by a surprise (relative) newcomer. No, despite Microsoft’s crafty trick of making Bing the default search tool for the Edge browser (fun fact: the most popular search term typed into Bing is “Google”) it did not manage to beat Google, and its ever-growing array of services including Maps, Translate, Photos, Flights, Books, and News.

    1) TikTok.com
    2) Google.com
    3) Facebook.com
    4) Microsoft.com

Will Chrome 100 be the next Y2K? Not if Google can help it

    Preventable Internet madness is nearing
    https://www.androidpolice.com/will-chrome-100-be-the-next-y2k-not-if-google-can-help-it/

Google recently changed Chrome’s release cycle from its usual six weeks to four, which means Chrome 100 has been creeping up on us a lot faster lately. It should be landing on the Canary release channel next month, and from there, it’s going to take a few more months to make its way down to the stable branch (currently on Chrome 96). We’re not expecting 100 to be a particularly revolutionary update in terms of feature-set or anything, but it does at least have the potential to be quite interesting, as it may or may not end up breaking a bunch of websites.

The issue affects mostly sites made with web design kits such as Duda, as per the Chromium Bug Tracker (via 9to5Google). These websites read your browser’s User Agent string to see what Chrome version you’re running — unfortunately, sites using Duda only read the first two digits of that number.

That’s not a problem right now, but it’s going to become an issue once version numbers are three digits instead of two. You don’t want websites thinking you’re running Chrome 10 — there’s a genuine chance a lot of them will outright block access for you.

“Life, uh, uh, finds a way,” to quote my favorite fictional mathematician. Yes, a hacker, one of us, has figured out a workaround. [Dmitrii Selivanov] has put together the “Return YouTube Dislike” browser extension, which does a couple of things. First, it is pulling archived data about videos, taking advantage of the gap in time between the official announcement, and the removal of the dislike API.
