Qualcomm announces the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, a 4nm chip aimed at high-end smartphones that adds on-device generative AI and Wi-Fi 7; OnePlus is the first partner
Qualcomm is following its announcement at the start of this week with another chip: the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3.
Following the 8 Gen 3 last year, Qualcomm has been working to bring premium/flagship capabilities down the range. Most notably the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 — the regular 7 was announced in November — allows for on-device generative AI, like images and voice assistants. Compatible LLMs include Gemini Nano, Baichuan-7B, Llama 2 and Zhipu ChatGLM.
The 4nm Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 features one Prime Cortex-X4 (up to 2.8 GHz), four Performance (2.6 GHz), and three Efficiency (1.9 GHz) cores. This series of chips is aimed at high-tier smartphones.
Compared to the 7+ Gen 2, there is 15% improved Kryo CPU (Geekbench 6 Multi Thread) and 45% better Adreno GPU (GFX Aztec Ruins 1080p) performance, while being 5% more power efficient.
In terms of connectivity, Wi-Fi 7 is coming to the 7-series with the FastConnect 7800, while the Snapdragon X63 5G Modem supports 3GPP Release 17.
On the gaming front, there’s a “Game Post Processing Accelerator” to offer “bloom, depth, and motion blur” effects, while the Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0 “enhances content at twice the frame rate without draining power.”
OnePlus will be one of the first partners to adopt the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, along with realme and SHARP, “in the next few months.”

It’s a bad day for bugs. Earlier today, Sentry announced its AI Autofix feature for debugging production code and now, a few hours later, GitHub is launching the first beta of its code-scanning autofix feature for finding and fixing security vulnerabilities during the coding process. This new feature combines the real-time capabilities of GitHub’s Copilot with CodeQL, the company’s semantic code analysis engine. The company first previewed this capability last November.
GitHub promises that this new system can remediate more than two-thirds of the vulnerabilities it finds — often without the developers having to edit any code themselves. The company also promises that code scanning autofix will cover more than 90% of alert types in the languages it supports, which are currently JavaScript, Typescript, Java, and Python.
This new feature is now available for all GitHub Advanced Security (GHAS) customers.

MediaTek this week has introduced a new lineup of Dimensity Auto Cockpit system-on-chips, covering the entire market spectrum from entry-level to premium. And while automotive chip announcements are admittedly not normally the most interesting of things, this one is going to be an exception to that rule because of whose graphics IP MediaTek is tapping for the chips: NVIDIA’s. This means the upcoming Dimensity Auto Cockpit chips will be the first chips to be released by a third-party (non-NVIDIA) vendor to be based around NVIDIA’s GeForce graphics technology.

On Wednesday at around 7:58 am local time, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off of Taiwan’s east coast, with the epicenter 18km from Hualien City. The country issued Tsunami warnings while Japan and the Philippines also braced for possible flooding. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, this is the most powerful quake Taiwan has experienced since a 7.7 event that occurred in 1999. The USGS also says that a 6.5 aftershock occurred 13 minutes later.
The good news is that TSMC’s foundries are located on the west side of Taiwan, while the quake occurred off of the east coast. The Financial Times has a great map showing the location of TSMC’s 12 Taiwan fabs, which are spread out between Tainan, Taichung, Hsinchu City, and Taoyuan City.

Google is launching its new Find My Device (FMD) network in the US and Canada starting today. It will initially find lost Android phones and tablets, with headphones coming soon after. Support for third-party Find My Device Bluetooth tags are coming in May.
This crowdsourced FMD network will use over a billion Android 9+ devices to find your lost items. It was first announced at Google I/O 2023 and missed the original summer target. Previously, the Find My Device app required your lost phone to have an Internet connection (no Wi-Fi or cellular). This new offering works even if they’re offline by leveraging Bluetooth.
The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro can be found even “if they’re powered off or the battery is dead.” Google credits “specialized Pixel hardware,” while it’s working with other Android OEMs and chipmakers on expanding this capability to premium devices.
Meanwhile, you’ll be able to find compatible Bluetooth tracker tags in May, which is when iOS 17.5 is expected with unknown tracker alerts. Chipolo and Pebblebee will release FMD devices next month, with “eufy, Jio, Motorola, and more” expected to release accessories “later this year.”

So what’s the added value here? The reduction in latency and of course increased redundancy from having the site served from 2-3 locations around the globe.

It’s a bad day for bugs. Earlier today, Sentry announced its AI Autofix feature for debugging production code and now, a few hours later, GitHub is launching the first beta of its code-scanning autofix feature for finding and fixing security vulnerabilities during the coding process. This new feature combines the real-time capabilities of GitHub’s Copilot with CodeQL, the company’s semantic code analysis engine. The company first previewed this capability last November.
GitHub promises that this new system can remediate more than two-thirds of the vulnerabilities it finds — often without the developers having to edit any code themselves. The company also promises that code scanning autofix will cover more than 90% of alert types in the languages it supports, which are currently JavaScript, Typescript, Java, and Python.
This new feature is now available for all GitHub Advanced Security (GHAS) customers.

On Wednesday at around 7:58 am local time, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off of Taiwan’s east coast, with the epicenter 18km from Hualien City. The country issued Tsunami warnings while Japan and the Philippines also braced for possible flooding. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, this is the most powerful quake Taiwan has experienced since a 7.7 event that occurred in 1999. The USGS also says that a 6.5 aftershock occurred 13 minutes later.
The good news is that TSMC’s foundries are located on the west side of Taiwan, while the quake occurred off of the east coast. The Financial Times has a great map showing the location of TSMC’s 12 Taiwan fabs, which are spread out between Tainan, Taichung, Hsinchu City, and Taoyuan City.

Google is launching its new Find My Device (FMD) network in the US and Canada starting today. It will initially find lost Android phones and tablets, with headphones coming soon after. Support for third-party Find My Device Bluetooth tags are coming in May.
This crowdsourced FMD network will use over a billion Android 9+ devices to find your lost items. It was first announced at Google I/O 2023 and missed the original summer target. Previously, the Find My Device app required your lost phone to have an Internet connection (no Wi-Fi or cellular). This new offering works even if they’re offline by leveraging Bluetooth.
The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro can be found even “if they’re powered off or the battery is dead.” Google credits “specialized Pixel hardware,” while it’s working with other Android OEMs and chipmakers on expanding this capability to premium devices.
Meanwhile, you’ll be able to find compatible Bluetooth tracker tags in May, which is when iOS 17.5 is expected with unknown tracker alerts. Chipolo and Pebblebee will release FMD devices next month, with “eufy, Jio, Motorola, and more” expected to release accessories “later this year.”

SEMI-järjestön ESD-raportin on laatinut entinen Mentorin toimitusjohtaja Walden C. Rhines. Hänen mukaansa kaikilla työkalusektoreilla kasvu oli kaksinumeroista viime vuoden aikana. CAE-työkaluja myytiin hieman yli 1,5 miljardilla dollarilla eli 19,5 prosenttia enemmän kuin vuotta aikaisemmin.

Embedded World -messuilla nähdään kasoittain uusia yhden kortin tietokoneita, joilla tuodaan tekoälyprosessointi verkon reunalle. Tärkeä puoli teollisuuden kortteja on myös tehonkulutuksen pitäminen kurissa. Kontron näyttää esimerkkiä.
Kontron esittelee messuilla uusia COM Express- ja SMARC-moduulejaan, jotka on varustettu seuraavan sukupolven pienitehoisilla Intel Atom -prosessoreilla. Moduulit ovat tulossa saatavilla lähikuukausina.
Uutuudet ovat COM Express Compact Type 6 COMe-cAS6, COM Express Mini Type 10 COMe-mAS10 ja SMARC-sXAS. Kaikki kolme alustaa tukevat IoT-sovelluksiin suunnitellun uuden Intel Atom -sarjan x7000E/x7000RE-, Intel Processor N -sarjan ja Intel Core i3-N305 -prosessoreita.
Suoritinvalikoiman ansiosta valmistaja voi valita sovellukseensa prosessorin hyvin laajalta skaalalta. Valikoima ulottuu kustannusoptimoidusta 2-ytimestä tehokkaaseen 8-ytimiseen Intel Core i3 -prosessoriin, joka toimii jopa 3,8 GHz:n taajuudella.

Teksasilainen Silicon Labs tunnetaan langattomasti IoT-piireistään, joiden radiot tukevat useaa protokollaa. Nyt yhtiö esittelee Nürnbergin Embedded World -messuilla uutta xG26-piiriperhettä. Siinä yhtiö on nostanut sirujen suorituskyvyn aivan uudelle tasolle.
Uusi perhe koostuu moniprotokollaisista MG26- ja Bluetooth LE BG26 -järjestelmäpiireistä sekä PG26-mikro-ohjaimesta. Kaikissa kolmessa on kaksinkertaisesti flash- ja RAM-muistia Silicon Labsin aiempiin moniprotokollapiireihin verrattuna.

From a few stories on Business Insider the HTML itself comes down to about 75 kB compressed, so for their approximately 200 million visitors a month they’d churn through 30 TB of bandwidth for the HTML assuming two articles read per visitor.
This comes down to 11 MB/s of HTML, which can be generated dynamically even with slow interpreted languages, or as [Thomas] says would allow for the world’s websites to be hosted on a system featuring single 192 core AMD Zen 5-based server CPU. So what’s the added value here? The reduction in latency and of course increased redundancy from having the site served from 2-3 locations around the globe.
In this scenario [Thomas] also sees no need for Docker, scaling solutions and virtualization, massively cutting down on costs and complexity. For those among us who run large websites (in the cloud or not), do you agree or disagree with this notion? Feel free to touch off in the comments.

Jos Nünrbergin Embedded Worldista pitäisi nostaa esiin yksi iso teema, vastaus on helppo: tekoäly. Datafarmeissa markkina on jo Nvidian kaappaama, mutta tekoäly on tulossa vahvasti kaikkiin, myös pienempiin laitteisiin. Siihen Nvidia ei pysty, vaan markkinat ovat vapaat Ambient Scientificin kaltaisille startupeille.
Yrityksen perustaja GP Singh esitteli ensimmäistä AI-prosessoriaan. GPS10 on 10 tekoäly-ytimen suoritin, joka on valmistettu 14 nanometrin prosessissa. Se ei yritäkään kisata Nvidian kanssa. GP Singhin mukaan siinä ei olisi mitään järkeä.
- Cerebras ja Sambanova ovat esimerkkejä yrityksistä, jotka halusivat kisata Nvidian kanssa, mutta eihän siinä hyvin käy. Nvidian haastaminen ei onnistu enää Inteliltäkään, Singh sanoo. Intelillä oli saumansa päästä AI-markkinoille, mutta monet yritysostonsa se on viime vuosina haaskannut. Esimerkiksi Nervanan se osti jo 2016, mutta nyt sekin on alettu alas.
Nvidia dominanssi on tavallaan ironinen ilmiö. Yhtiö ei ole koskaan suunnitellut tai valmistanut tekoälyprosessoreita. Sen GPU-prosessorit vain istuvat hyvin ChatGPT-tyyppiseen pilvipohjaiseen AI-mallien prosessointiin. Yhtiö omistaa markkinan, sillä sillä ei käytännössä ole kilpailijoita.
