Finland is number one ICT country

Tietoviikko reports that Finland (my home country) is the world’s best IT country according to World Economic Forum study The Global Information Technology Report 2013. According to the study, Finland is the world’s number one country when it comes to the economy’s ability to use information technology to competitiveness and prosperity. Finland has toppled Sweden from the top spot in a ranking of economies that are best placed to benefit from new information and communication technologies (ICTs). The question still remains how this result was got because there are many things in Finland ICT that are are far from very good, so are other countries just much lousier on those aspects?

At the core of the report, the Networked Readiness Index (NRI) measures the preparedness of an economy to use ICT to boost competitiveness and well-being. In this edition, Finland (1st), Singapore (2nd) and Sweden (3rd) continue to lead the NRI, with the Netherlands (4th), Norway (5th), Switzerland (6th), the United Kingdom (7th), Denmark (8th), the United States (9th) and Taiwan, China (10th) completing the top 10.

Global Information Technology Report 2013 has a nice map that visualizes the network readiness of different countries.

Coding tests, lunches and … so software companies decide who gets to work

Programming, are you leaving your present position? Software Companies Codento and Gofore make their choice on the basis of such rounds of interviews and tests.

Codento job applicants must first pass a short programming task, which may be conducted under supervision at home. For performing this task takes time to 15-30 minutes.

“We try to ensure that we are not inadvertently hiring software developers, which is then able to code all. Some of the people in the field makes it so easy software development, the basics of the industry have been forgotten. They work more than the configurator developer’s role “, states Petri Aukia.

Programming Task Passes are facing the first round of interviews.

“The interview takes place in the lunch. During that period, it is easy to see what kind of person the applicant is. He, too, sees what kind of people we are, ”

“Our consultants must be useful since first day at work, and to understand the extent of other people that the client dares to tell them about their problems,”

The last round of interviews Codento is a technical interview. During that period, explains what the applicant is dominated by technologies and what new he would like to learn, in addition to what he/she already knows.

“If the applicant is satisfied with the existing competencies, it is not enough, such a man would have to be subsequently made redundant. In this area, will be forced to hire people who want to learn something new”

“Work culture has not come by accident, its creation has taken us a long time. However, being a big part of the day with colleagues. For us, it is particularly important that the team has a different expertise; that there is someone from whom you can learn something new. And, correspondingly, a new entrant is something that expertise that he can teach others. ”

    Codento currently has 27 employees,

Gofore this year has hired approximately 60 new employees. Half of them have been hired in Tampere office and the rest of Helsinki.

All selected have gone through at least two rounds of interviews, and many have participated in the third round of the interview.

“The first interview is access from both sides. Applicants understand what kind of company is seeking for and we get to know the applicant more, “says Ms Mari Wuoti.

Where applicants and interviewers want to continue, turn a second round of interviews. It is tested according to Wuotin knowledge of substance.

Between the first and second round of interviews may also be a pre-assignment.

“If necessary, then arrange a third round of interviews. This is done, for example, when you select a person completely new role, ”

American Professor compares the Finnish and Nokia to dinosaur extinction

US-based Southern California University assistant professor of marketing praises Finnish profusely lengthy post Huffington Post.

Assistant professor believes that Nokia’s collapse may arise some good.

Associate Professor Ira Kalb writes Finland has managed to turn disaster into many opportunities. He refers to it as the Nokia collapsed and its mobile phone operations were sold to Microsoft.

The author believes that the disaster may, however, will eventually lead to something much greater good. Kalb even compares the events in Finland and Nokia, to the extinction of dinosaurs and the development of a new life.

    - Nature has its own way of dealing with disasters and to turn them into success stories. About 66 million years ago when a comet or asteroid struck the ground and killed the dinosaurs and 75 percent of all living species. This paved the way for the evolution of mammals.

Finland Is Turning a Big Negative Into a Bigger Positive
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ira-kalb/finland-is-turning-a-big_b_8856742.html

Anyone that has been watching Finland over the last few years knows that what started as one big disaster is turning into many opportunities that promise a bright future for this Nordic country.

    The negative

At its peak in 2007, Nokia had a market capitalization of $250 billion. That was before the iPhone and Android phones took the lions-share of the smartphone market away from Nokia’s disappointing smartphone line-up. Before its deal with Microsoft was announced, Nokia’s stock price was trading somewhere between $3 and $4 per share – giving it a market value between 2 and 3% of its 2007 value. Nokia’s decline and subsequent sale of its handset business to Microsoft has had a more serious negative impact on Finland’s economy than many originally thought.

Even successes from Neste (oil refining), Wärtsilä (power systems), Kone (maker of elevators and escalators), Rovio (creator of Angry Birds, which recently announced its own layoffs), Supercell (creator of Clash of Clans), and many others have not been enough to counteract the negative impact Nokia’s decline has had on the Finnish economy and its world-wide footprint.

Nature has a way of taking disasters and turning them into successes. Roughly 66 million years ago, a comet or asteroid struck the Earth and killed the dinosaurs and 75% of all living species. This catastrophic event cleared the way for the evolution of mammals, and enabled humans to thrive on a planet where they would be dinosaur hors d’oeuvres.

Finns are fond of nature, and perhaps that’s the reason something similar is happening in Finland.

    Thriving and growing tech ecosystem

Highly skilled and trained former Nokia employees are starting companies, conferences, venture organizations, and all the bits and pieces needed to create a thriving entrepreneurial tech sector in Finland.

The aim of the research project is a new method for security management.

“Under the right places and when used correctly, these solutions are good, but the premise of improving the organization’s information security can not be indiscriminately merchandise. Few people, for example, start of building construction project by purchasing a hardware store in the prospectus of windows without construction drawings. The same applies to the improvement of security. Good planning is the basis of everything “, emphasizes Professor Siponen release.

Nonetheless, previous research or practitioners have not developed a systematic and scientifically verified method for the preparation of the information security policy.

Finnish invention helps the development of quantum computers

Aalto University researchers have made a breakthrough in physics, which can contribute to the development of super-efficient quantum computers. Mikko Möttösen-led research team has managed to transfer heat efficiently for maximum ten thousand times further than ever before.

The group achievement will revolutionize the so-called quantum limited heat conduction or heat transfer as efficiently as possible from point A to point B.

Developed on top of the device consists of a superconducting transmission line serpentine silicon chip. Möttösen experiments the research team got the heat to move quantum meter. Although the meter does not initially sound like a long journey, but in the past this kind of heat transfer is obtained from the measured thickness of the hair only responsible for the trip.

The first important insight for successful research was used to transport the heat photons. Photons are particles, for example, all of which visible light is comprised. In the past, tests have been made, for example electrons.

Finnish researchers were able to demonstrate experiments that quantum limited conduction of heat is possible over long distances. This allows the utilization of the phenomenon outside laboratories.
