Finland is number one ICT country

Tietoviikko reports that Finland (my home country) is the world’s best IT country according to World Economic Forum study The Global Information Technology Report 2013. According to the study, Finland is the world’s number one country when it comes to the economy’s ability to use information technology to competitiveness and prosperity. Finland has toppled Sweden from the top spot in a ranking of economies that are best placed to benefit from new information and communication technologies (ICTs). The question still remains how this result was got because there are many things in Finland ICT that are are far from very good, so are other countries just much lousier on those aspects?

At the core of the report, the Networked Readiness Index (NRI) measures the preparedness of an economy to use ICT to boost competitiveness and well-being. In this edition, Finland (1st), Singapore (2nd) and Sweden (3rd) continue to lead the NRI, with the Netherlands (4th), Norway (5th), Switzerland (6th), the United Kingdom (7th), Denmark (8th), the United States (9th) and Taiwan, China (10th) completing the top 10.

Global Information Technology Report 2013 has a nice map that visualizes the network readiness of different countries.

Interfaces create new business – and cry for security

fewer than half of the commercial cloud services like Salesforce or eBay’s revenue is generated through the browser front nyhertävien end-user actions.

Most of the revenue coffers jingle grindstone through customers or partners’ self-written applications. Smartphones and tablets use applications has become so common that the use of the browser is an exceptional case.

Services can be accessed via the application interface, or API interface. The cloud giants in the wake of the quite ordinary companies have started to publish their own APIs for example product catalogues, business apps or info to their services. Open data providers are also significant APIs publishers.

The use of APIs can already view as a separate business as a form, API economy. Public APIs directory to maintain ProgrammableWeb.com. The directory is as of this writing 13 990 APIs.
API stands for application programming interface.

The current API-boom at the heart of Web APIs represent a new generation of the 2010s. The most common standards are rest and json, but on top of them built practices are less formal and therefore easier to use than SOA

When new business models are developed with enthusiasm, unpleasant basics such as security meet to be forgotten.

security breaches and vulnerabilities associated with api implementations past few years have raised the headlines of all the known companies like Facebook, Snapchat, Tinder, Twitter … Even the US tax authorities

As SOA time, the development of important standardized security procedures such as WSS (Web Services Security) and SAML.

Rest APIs, the world dispersion is more; the main security procedures are traffic TLS encryption, secure access to the delegation of the OAuth 2.0 and OpenID, and json-practices to protect jw family of encryption standards.

Of course, nothing to force the use of any specific procedures, because the API is a kind of two-way street. Apin publisher is satisfied if Apia is used, and the feedback will come in, hopefully not in the form of information leakage. Minority apin publishers to verify customers’ applications in any way – if api provides a technically sufficient data security, its use is the customer’s responsibility.

German University of Darmstadt and Fraunhofer SIT organization researchers reported in May to have found Parse- Facebook and Amazon AWS user databases of tens of millions of virtually unprotected user data: email addresses, passwords, contacts, and even financial payment transaction data

Researchers found Google’s and Apple’s app store multitudes of applications that have registered those background services confidential user data without any other protection. Such an application API is contrary to the instructions for use of services, but too few people thinking the author of the application security issues enough.

The end user is the entire unprotected against API threats; the ball is application developers. Owasp organization’s vulnerability statistics is a useful checklist to API developers. After careful software design and coding, can be used in the finished code vulnerability testing. Traditional testing products are indeed not very useful with novel APIs.

According to Gartner, published in August of applications security testing tools report goes through the 19 products. It is only a sparse instrument descriptions indicate any willingness to test the REST / JSON APIs, although progress has been over the last couple of years, just started to happen.

If several different APIs use the same authentication process, this should be implemented in a special API gateway on the other hand, that every programmer encodes its own solution.

APIs centralized management products are offered by many well-established enterprise software companies such as CA, IBM and Software AG.

DNA brings gigabit fiber-optic network for Finnish metropolitan area

DNA launches the metropolitan area gigabit speed a new generation of fiber-optic network. The new network offers a gigabit broadband speeds without modifications inside the condominium online. DNA future sent tens of gigabits per second speed. It was now possible for more than three gigs.

Gigabit speed, with about 300 000 households in the metropolitan area, and within a year of gigs speed will be available to more than 600 000 households. In a few years the network will be available connections of up to ten gigabits.

“Gigabit speed Internet connections are the most demanded before the house in the grounds cabling companies or renewal of the internal network. Now, the speed can be hundreds of thousands of ordinary households, without any modification ”

Typically, the main challenges for Web access speeds are within the network of buildings and home wireless LAN. “If the building’s internal network is implemented in a conventional telephone cable, not for high-speed backbone network is usually not very much helpful, ”

Another bottleneck is the home wireless LAN, or WLAN network, which often eat the majority of internet connection speed.

DNA was carried out according to the Bulletin 3.055 Gbit / s -nopeusennätyksen the launch of a new fiber network on Monday 05/09/2016. The speed record was carried out Docsis 3.1 technology. The current network is 3.0 version.

According to DNA no other other operator in Europe has not reached the 3.055 Gbit / speed delivery of live-in conditions, or in the normal customer use the broadband network.

“Seen speed records several gigs of access up to ten gigabits will be DNA available to all cable households already within a few years,”

Lauri, 29, came up with how to get a taxi to the price of a large chunk off – Taxi Association: “A great opening”

SERVICES The small company found a way to share a taxi expenses conveniently.
Lauri Lankinen invented a mobile phone application that share a taxi ride costs equitably among all passengers. Passengers’ credit cards will be charged their share.

    - In practice, we offer car-sharing, traveling in the same direction to people. The idea is that a group of friends going to the same point, and if they get enough in the same direction, the application may propose to take this guy according aboard. If he is accepted aboard, cost-shared portion of the journey between all passengers. Application, the user needs only to select from where to pick up. The system tells you who else is in the same place on the road in the same direction.

The app is fed to installing your own credit card and account information. The passenger whose destination is the last route to pay for the entire trip. Other passenger’s credit card will be charged their share and will be paid taxi ride paid account.

“The application is not a competitor of the taxi industry. ”
-We Do not Uber, and we do not intend to be. We want to offer taxi operators more gigs.

Lankinen believes that the application has a lot of use, for example, following two major public events.

Taxi Association looks to the application the green light.
Taxi Association welcomes new ridesharing app welcome. Mutanen application describes a legitimate way to share a resource, in this case, the taxi ride.
-This Is a great opening, which hopefully takes off, enthuses Taxi Association Director General Jouni Mutanen.
Application is still a good side too, that it will take advantage of modern devices. The taxi driver does not need to acquire any new device in the car.

    Broadband European record in Finland

The new gigabit broadband connection operator launched a DNA did the same demossaan broadband subscriptions European speed record. The new DOCSIS 3.1 technology was not achieved in the current consumer online more than three gigabit data rate.

DOCSIS 3.1 was released in October 2013 cable modem standard that 4096 QAM modulation supports 10 gigabit-speed network to the terminal, and a gigabit link in the other direction. OFDM-based technology enables the connection of a width from 20 to 50 kHz channels, together with up to 200 MHz communion, thus entering into said data speeds.

DNA demo Sagem Com DOCSIS 3.1 also achieved -modem DNA in the fiber network of more than three gigabit data rates. In practice, the demo was combined with four 750-800 Mbps LAN link into one.

DOCSIS 3.1 technology has the advantage that it requires very little investment. Household Cable connections are working at present. The modem must be, of course, to support the new standard

Yet more than six years ago, the Finnish broadband top speed of 200 megabits per second. DNA today announced the raising of the fastest fixed subscriptions a maximum rate of one gigabit per second. The current top speed of the company’s customers is 350 megabits per second.

    - We estimated that every household is 9-15 device connected to the Internet. Video accounts for 80 percent of our data and the continuing need for more capacity.

New Optical Fiber Plus subscription costs Fifty bucks a month, and it will go on sale tomorrow. At the initial stage gigabit gain access to 300 000 households in the metropolitan area. Faster Web requires replacement of cable modem.

DNA aims to get fast symmetrical Internet speeds of up to 10 gigabits of data, or would run the same speed in both directions. The company has not told the public the target schedule, but on the basis of today’s 10 Gbps Web could be used in some already in 2020.

Another bottleneck associated with sharing a network connection over a WLAN network. The current Standard modems over WLAN provides approximately 90 megabits per second. The new modem 3×3 channel data is transferred to demo 390 megabits per second.

Finland 2030: Poor broadband and prices in the clouds?

Finnet afraid Finnish fixed-line networks to drift towards foreign hands, and it will fade all the way down.

President and CEO of Finnet Association Jarmo Matilainen warn off local and general domestic ownership in the hands of Finnish fixed-line networks will flash in the future. Municipalities should take care that this does not happen and that the services and conditions for the area of business will remain.

    - If the network owner and the client are on different body, no profit is to invest in local services.

However, prices are not yet pompanneet fixed broadband networks, even though the regional telecommunications and network operators in Finland is no more than twenty – that is, more than half less than 15 years ago.

    - It is due to the fact that structural change between the mobile and the fixed market is still in progress. Mobile operators tend to eat the price of living space for fixed-line operators. As soon as someone important fixed network operator disappears from the market, the price goes up, Matilainen says to Digitoday.

    - If the recent trend continues, and in addition to the major operators are sold further to the larger international operators or tax paradise for investors, as the price level growth threatens to increase

IndustryHack is a Finnish company that organizes series of hackathons with various industries. Past hacks have been organized with many international enterprises like Nokia, Kone, and Konecranes. Company hosting the event opens access to data via APIs and competing teams innovate new digital value-add services a top of that.

IndustryHack defines itself as bringing together software developers and tech startups to create new product concepts. Hack event is open to anybody to attend, but in practice most of the attending teams are organized by software consulting companies. This time, the list of winners is following:

    1. IBM + Ixonos (software consulting company)
    2. Cybercom (software consulting company)
    3. Symbio (software consulting company)

The IndustryHack has emerged quite far away from the original idea of hackathons bringing students, hobbyists and makers together, this time there was no student or hobbyist team involved. The new concept is rather unique; leading software companies are bringing their best forces, free of charge, to innovate new solutions for the given host company, during a weekend event. Ideas are pitched and shared publicly among participants.

“You are what you share” is the slogan of the new sharing economy. Expressing your ideas with your competitors does not necessarily make you weaker but stronger. Motivation for companies to do so is the positive PR, this is what we can and that’s how we do it. Some lucky one may also end up in having commercial contract for actual implementation project.
