I have been prototyping a number of small circuits recently each using SMD parts, each time a new board comes in I need to solder up a few of the boards for testing.
To speed up this soldering process I have come up with a simple workflow that doesn’t require much set up, equipment or tidying up.

    This kind of tweezer soldering iron is useful somerimes when working with SMD components on tight places. Also pair of small soldering irons can be used. Or putting in lots of heat protection to surrounding components (copper or aluminum foil in right way) and then use hot air.

    snapped the TX side sma attachment right off, while carrying the Nanovna in my pocket with a gender connector attached. Note how it tore the metal right off of the board where it connected. The back side connection area left some solder and metal to re-solder to. The top one did not. I assume it cannot be fixed?

    There is a way to repair this, and it could be as good as new (possibly uglier than new).

    There are two parts: fix the electrical connection and fix the mechanical connection. If you replace the strip that was taken off the board with a flat piece of metal (copper tape cut down to size, for example), solder everything in place, and then carefully epoxy the new piece of metal to the circuit board.

    You might want to practice a couple of times on some scrap circuit boards to perfect your technique.

    Upgrading the memory in a computer is usually a straightforward case of swapping out a few DIMMs or SODIMMs, with the most complex task being to identify the correct type of memory from the many available. But sometimes a laptop manufacturer can be particularly annoying, and restrict upgradability by soldering the RAM chips directly to the board. Upgrading memory should then be impossible, but this reckons without the skills of [Greg Davill], who worked through the process on his Dell XPS13.

    The write-up is a fascinating primer on how DRAM identification works, which for removable DIMMs is handled by an onboard FLASH chip containing the details of the chips on board. A soldered-on laptop has none of these, so instead it employs a series of resistors whose combination tells the BIOS what memory to expect.

    This hot plate idea is really interesting. I like how the main component is very common and cheap. Wish some other electronics youtubers would do more creative stuff like this.

    A GFCI plug is needed first thing so you are protected during prototyping. Then like you said cover all the mains voltage connections before you consider the project finished. Also don’t let any mains voltage cables get within 1 cm of the low voltage cables. You don’t want failed wire insulation to energize your low voltage stuff at mains voltage.

    I would personally recommend to be careful with mains wires, in case of the awg cables, the main ones have a double insulation, not a simple one to lower electric shock hasard, also the cable that go to the heater may need to be protected from heat, or else, the insulation could easily go out.
    Also you are clearly using ATX power supply wires to connect the power cord to the ssr, the are comonly (if not all the time) 20AWG or 18AWG, wich means a section of .6mm^2 or 0.8mm^2. clearly undersized for 13 amps
    Theses precautions may not be necessary on a prototype, but on a final machine taht will be used oftenly, safety should be mandatory. Also, do you think of aquiring a pick and place, maybe the index project by stephen hawes will intrest you

    Modern irons like that have very limited amount of metal, and low thermal mass.
    Its better to use an old iron with thick metal, you get more even heating.
    You can also try a cover over the pcb, to keep heat in and make the temperature more even. A glass Pyrex bowl can work very well.

    [EEforEveryone] is trying to find a good hot plate for reflow soldering. After trying one cheap unit, he got another one. He was a bit underwhelmed. The grounding was suspect and the bed wasn’t totally flat. He tore it apart and was surprised that there was very little inside. While the construction wasn’t perfect, it was better than the previous unit. You can see a video of the teardown and review below.

    Before powering it up, the first order of business was to rewire the ground system. After that, it was time to try it. However, by confusing Fahrenheit and Centigrade, he set the temperature much higher than necessary which creating a little smoke. Fixing the temperature helped, but there was still a bit of a smoky smell that eventually subsided.

    The verdict? The hot plate worked well enough, but you probably do want to check the ground wiring before using it.

    I needed a paste dispenser for when I solder SMD components. This has a 3D printed case and a small DC motor with gears to push a piston and push the paste out of the syringe. We can control some settings on the screen. I amde with and Arduino and H bridge.

    Surface mount components have been a game changer for the electronics hobbyist, but doing reflow soldering right requires some way to evenly heat the board. You might need to buy a commercial reflow oven — you can cobble one together from an old toaster oven, after all — but you still need something, because it’s not like a PCB is going to solder itself. Right?

    Wrong. At least if you’re [Carl Bugeja], who came up with a clever way to make his PCBs self-soldering. The idea is to use one of the internal layers on a four-layer PCB, which would normally be devoted to a ground plane, as a built-in heating element. Rather than a broad, continuous layer of copper, [Carl] made a long, twisting trace covering the entire area of the PCB. Routing the trace around vias was a bit tricky, but in the end he managed a single trace with a resistance of about 3 ohms.

    When connected to a bench power supply, the PCB actually heats up quickly and pretty evenly judging by the IR camera. The quality of the soldering seems very similar to what you’d see from a reflow oven. After soldering, the now-useless heating element is converted into a ground plane for the circuit by breaking off the terminals and soldering on a couple of zero ohm resistors to short the coil to ground.

    Let me show you 008004 component scale, single element is just 0.25×0.125mm, I suppose in funny units it’s something like 008×004.
