Raspberry PI 4 Released

Raspberry Pi 4 was just released: Faster CPU, More Memory, Dual HDMI Ports. A new version of the $35 computer features a 1.5GHz Arm chip and support for dual-HDMI 4K displays, Gigabit Ethernet, and much more. This credit card size Raspberry PI 4 desktop computer level of performance. Raspberry Pi 4 is now on sale, starting at $35. $35 gets you the standard 1GB RAM, or you can pay $45 for the 2GB model or $55 for the 4GB model.

    The Broadcom SoC in the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B has been quietly updated to match the one in the Raspberry Pi 400, according to St Louis-based app developer (and more importantly, Pi Cast guest) Jeff Geerling.

    Geerling noticed the change after buying a new Raspberry Pi 4, an 8GB model, to replace a broken board, and spotting that one character in the model number on one of its chips had changed. The BCM2711 is the SoC (System on Chip), the whole brain of the Raspberry Pi housing its CPU, GPU, and the PCIe link that connects the USB ports. Previously, its model number has ended in B0T, but Geerling’s new baby has a model number ending C0T, matching that used in the Raspberry Pi 400’s SoC.

    It makes sense for Raspberry Pi to have done this, as it cuts down on the different chips

    The Raspberry Pi 400 all-in-one computer is a neat little unit that is powerful enough to take on most humdrum computing tasks while doing an excellent job of freeing up valuable desktop space. But what about those moments when both the Pi and a PC are needed on the same desktop? How can the Pi and the bulky PC keyboard share the same space?

    [Gadgetoid] may have the answer, with a clever bit of software that presents the Pi’s mouse and keyboard as peripherals on its USB-C power port. If your PC has a high-power USB socket that can run the Pi then it can use the small computer’s input devices just as well as the Pi itself can. It’s fair to say that the Pi 400’s keyboard is not it’s strongest point, but we can see some utility in the idea.

    Making a complex PCB can often be a daunting prospect for those of us who don’t do it for a living every day, so our first CM4 board from [Timonsku] shows that a CM4 project needn’t be complex at all. It’s a CM4 carrier board with a full-size HDMI socket, USB-A and C ports, as well as a microSD slot. A modest specification to be sure, but what sets it apart is the PCB itself. It’s a single-sided design milled with a PCB router, demonstrating that a CM4 carrier is simple enough to be created at home. Anyone really can spin up their own Pi! [Timonsku] hasn’t rested on his laurels though, producing as well the Piunora, a CM4 carrier with an Arduino footprint.

    We always get excited when we buy a new tablet.     V3DV, Mesa’s driver for the Vulkan API on Broadcom graphics processors such as that found in the Raspberry Pi 4 has reached another milestone: compliance with Vulkan’s 1.1 standard. There hasn’t been an announcement as such, but an update to the project’s repository at freedesktop.org was noticed by Phoronix.

    the project is now capable of running FPS games such as Quake 3 on the $35 Raspberry Pi.

    While not the latest version of the API – 1.2 became available in January 2020 and is still being refined – it’s an important step forward, as it brings better compatibility with DirectX 12 for Vulkan, gives it multi-GPU support at the API level (potentially good for those using Pi clusters) and supports ray-tracing, geometry shaders, and advanced GPU compute functionality.

    The all-in-one Raspberry Pi 400 computer is a capable device, but those seeking its maximum power may be disappointed by its 4 GB of memory. When the Pi 4 and Compute Module 4 have double that figure, surely the Pi 400 could catch up! A reddit user called [Pi800] rose to the challenge by replacing the 4 GB chip from the Pi 400 with the 8 GB chip from a Pi Compute Module, resulting in the so-called Pi 800, a working 8 GB all-in-one Pi.
