This announcement should not come as a surprise for network operators – IPv4 run-out has long been anticipated and planned for by the RIPE community.
We have reached the end of the internet as we used to know it (IPv4).
The cat has a cheeseburger. Rick Astley has given us up and let us down. Everyone, good work and end of era.
Every device connected to the Internet needs to have an identifier. Both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses come from finite pools of numbers.
So let’s move to wider use of IPv6 as there is no IPv5. It is worth noting that there are 4,294,967,296 IPv4 addresses in total (now allocated), significantly less than the number of IPv6 addresses that uses 128 bit addresses with have 64 bits of network prefix.
IPv6 has been coming for 20 years. It was around 20 years ago when I set up my first IPv6 network and wrote some IPv6 code.

The organisation responsible for allocating new IP addresses across in Europe, the Middle East and parts of central Asia says it has finally run out of IPv4 addresses.
