    Researchers are calling for tighter regulation of AI-powered toys designed for toddlers, after conducting one of the first tests in the world to investigate how under-fives interact with the technology.

    The study looked at how a small sample of children between the ages of three and five interacted with a cuddly toy called Gabbo.

    A number of AI toys are already on the market for children aged as young as three but there is currently very little research into the impact of the tech on pre-schoolers.

    The Cambridge University team found just seven relevant studies worldwide, none of which focused on the toddlers themselves.

    Gabbo contains a voice-activated AI chatbot from OpenAI. It has been designed to encourage pre-schoolers to talk to it and carry out imaginative play.

    The term language model is used for a reason. They’re not actually “thinking”. It’s using massive compute resources to put together the most likely combination of words that would be spoken by a human, for it’s responses.

    Sounds a bit like how our mind works… drawing from an extremely large database, computing the most likely combination of words to get our point across, in general, to answer a query.

    The only difference is autonomy, which can be achieved in a system with the right command.

    On Feb. 9 public insurance broker stocks fell by 9% on the news that two digital companies had launched chat-bot assistants using ChatGPT’s tools. While the valuation of those brokers’ stocks have largely recovered, at least a few analysts suggest that thinking may be premature.

    In a report by BofA Global Research, “Putting numbers around insurance agent/broker AI disintermediation risk,” analysts reported that at least $15 billion of independent agency commissions and broker fees-those considered “low complexity”-are at risk for some disintermediation. Analysts estimate in total U.S. independent agency commissions/broker fees were in excess of $100 billion in 2025.

    “There are clearly other carriers-most notably Liberty Mutual-who generate additional billions in commissions that also can skew toward low complexity. Public insurance agent/broker disclosure tends to be very thin, making it difficult for investors to estimate what proportion of their commissions skew toward low complexity,” the report said.

    The report’s authors added that they are not suggesting a “mass disintermediation of the entirety of a business” but believe a “non-immaterial minority of the business” could be a risk.

    “Our view is that large-language model digital agents can effectively do a non-immaterial portion of the work currently provided by 20-30k independent agents across the United States,” the report stated. But nothing is certain. “As with many theses regarding technological innovation, the future is hard to predict,” the authors wrote.

    For now, it seems large commercial risks are not “at-risk” for AI disintermediation. The complexity of such risks and the value that an agent and broker provide to these insureds cannot be replaced.

    Still, the report noted there could be a “deflation” in large-case business.

    “While we do not expect large insurance buyers to use digital agents to purchase insurance, we do expect A.I. will de-mystify insurance markets,” the analysts wrote. “Sophisticated insurance buyers will benefit from the deflationary impact of technological innovation, potentially reducing pricing power for their services.”

    If you decided to blow off a Zoom meeting by sending an AI dummy instead, you might find yourself out of a job. But when a head honcho does it, it’s a masterfully executed stunt, a sign of a business genius who’s got his finger on the pulse.

    Take Sam Sidhu, the CEO of Customers Bank. During a conference call discussing the company’s latest earnings reports, he waited nearly an hour before revealing that it was actually an AI that had been speaking all along, CNBC reports — which, to be honest, feels like a huge waste of everyone’s time.

    “The prepared remarks you heard on my behalf today were delivered by my AI clone, not read by me,” Sidhu said, bragging that it was a potential first for a public company earnings call. (Whether anyone was actually fooled is unclear.)

    As it turns out, Customers Bank recently signed a multiyear partnership with OpenAI to deploy its AI models across the bank, as well as collaborate to create custom AI capabilities tailored to its banking operations, it announced Monday.     YouTube has a serious slop problem.

    The platform has been inundated with lazy AI-generated footage, from pseudo-educational videos explicitly aimed at toddlers and preschoolers to fake movie trailers. It’s become such a wasteland that some channels are starting to curate their playlists as being “no AI,” in an apparent effort to lure in users who’ve become fed up with the trend.

    And despite YouTube battling the slop in a largely symbolic game of Whack-a-Mole, many channels are still falling through the cracks. One channel, dubbed Joe Liza WWE, which was initially created in 2007 and boasts just shy of 2,000 users, has been posting a slew of up to two-hour videos discussing the World Wrestling Entertainment industry and all the drama that surrounds it.

    And beyond being a haphazardly put together barrage of real and AI-generated footage that’s randomly interspersed with clips of the video game “WWE 2K,” some incredible red flags come up when you actually listen to the accompanying, robotic voiceover.

    As one unsettled Bluesky user noticed, some of the recent uploads include the male voice of a bot that frequently melts down into disturbing, nonsensical repetitions of a single word for several minutes at a time.

    The baffling voiceovers demonstrate how AI slop has enabled a content ecosystem in entire long-form videos are being published that seemingly not a single human creator ever watched in entirety. In fact, they’re proliferating wildly — while potentially making it harder for real content creators to stand out in the process.

    One weeks-old clip, which has since been made private, has the AI narrator repeat the word “what” or “whoa” in increasingly animated ways, culminating in obscene mouth noises. Several other videos have the host trip up on the same word as well, as YouTube users helpfully point out in the video’s comments.

    “I’m crying bro, this is the funniest sh*t ever,” one commenter wrote.

    It’s possible the person or people behind the account are looking to exploit the platform’s algorithms to lure in unsuspecting viewers through recommended related videos or auto-play. However, it’s unclear whether the account is making any money for through ad views. The YouTube Partner Program requires either 1,000 subscribers or 4,000 public watch hours in the past 12 months to monetize videos.

    In theory, using an AI model to churn out a bunch of code for your software company sounds like an awesome idea. A ruthless boss can cut down their workforce and save on paying their salaries and healthcare. Or they can keep the employees, and force them to crank out even more code with an AI. Either way, it’s an efficient cost-cutting dream.

    But reality is beginning to set in. Businesses are racking up huge AI usage bills they didn’t expect, with a single employee spending over $150,000 a month on AI tokens. And AI companies are feeling the squeeze that the rampant use of their coding tools is putting on their servers, causing them to jack up usage rates.

    In other words, the economics of rapidly deploying AI coding tools across companies are looking more questionable than ever. And one telling weather vane of where things are headed comes from Anthropic, which quietly doubled its estimate for how much the average business will end up spending on its Claude Code tool.

    The sneaky update was first spotted by Ed Zitron, who extensively covers the AI industry. Before April 16, the Claude Code document estimated the average cost per developer to be $6 per day, and the average cost for 90 percent of users to be below $12.

    But the documents now state that the “average cost is around $13 per developer per active day and $150-250 per developer per month, with costs remaining below $30 per active day for 90 percent of users.”

    A difference of several dollars doesn’t sound like much in isolation. But costs are clearly trending upwards, and those dollars add up. Many developers run multiple AI agents per employee at the same time, using them to churn out code for different tasks for hours on end. For organizations with thousands of employees all running their own posses of AI servants, the costs could be exorbitant — are exorbitant, in fact. Some, by their own admission, could be paying human salaries for what they’re spending on coding tools.

    As the costs of using AI rise, in other words, the question of whether AI is worth all the baggage it brings will be harder and harder to ignore.

    Over the past year or so, a bizarre phenomenon has emerged: people start talking with AI chatbots about delusions or conspiracies and get sucked into mental health crises that doctors are calling “AI psychosis.”

    In a recent interview on Sean Hannity’s YouTube podcast, FBI head Kash Patel lauded AI for helping stop multiple violent attacks on innocent people.

    “AI was never used at the FBI till we got there, literally crazy,” Patel said in his characteristically hopped up affect. “I’m using it everywhere.”

    Specifically, Patel — who’s been accused of severe issues related to alcohol consumption — alleges that using AI the FBI has been able to foil numerous mass shootings at schools throughout the US.

    “We stopped a school massacre in North Carolina because we got a tip from our private-sector partners who are building out AI infrastructure,” he bragged.

    As with everything coming out of the Trump administration, we need to take this statement with a Mar-a-Lago-sized grain of salt. While it remains to be seen whether AI has really helped the FBI thwart mass casualty events, there’s extremely compelling evidence that the exact opposite is also true.

    It’s been a story of the last week or so if you follow the kind of news channels a Hackaday scribe does, that Google have quietly installed an LLM as part of the Chrome browser. Reports vary as to when they did this because there’s a lot of confusion online with their online Gemini features also present in the browser, but it seems Chrome users are noticing its effect through slower performance and hefty disk access. Given that Chrome is by far the most popular web browser, this means that billions of users will have downloaded the four gigabyte Gemini Nano model, and now have an LLM they didn’t know about. It will be used to provide advanced auto-correct and other text suggestion features that their online version of Gemini would presumably be overburdened with, and since it’s available through a set of in-browser APIs we expect that it will find its way into a lot of websites, online applications, and plugins.
