One thing that could put a dent in the hype around Anthropic’s upcoming, multitrillion dollar IPO? People preferring cheapo models over its flagship AI products.
Recent spending data from 70,000 US companies collected by the payments group Ramp shows that spending on Fable 5, Anthropic’s priciest and most powerful model, has plateaued at only 11 percent of the overall outlay, or money spent, on its AI tools, the Financial Times reported.
It reflects a shift in how enterprise users are using flagship models, reserving them only for the most complex tasks while letting more than serviceable cheaper models take care of the dirty work. Those cheaper alternatives can be Anthropic’s own older models, or open-weight models offered by Chinese competitors.
If the pattern holds, according to the FT, it could upend the go-big-or-go-home business model of leading AI labs, which have focused on pouring their resources into building even larger and more complex models.
“Most people don’t need to operate at the frontier,” Miles Clements, a partner at the venture capital firm Accel, which has invested $1 billion in Anthropic, told the FT.
The period when customers favored using only frontier models “was not a durable era,” Clements added.
Fable 5 had a rocky launch in June.
OpenAI, meanwhile, is nipping at Anthropic’s heels. After losing significant ground to Anthropic this year, the ChatGPT maker’s annualized revenue has surged to $40 billion, with its new GPT-5.6 model, which is much cheaper to use than Fable 5, boosting sales.
Some experts are seeing the plateaued Fable 5 spending as a glass half-full. Alex Imas, director of AGI economics at Google DeepMind, argued that Anthropic isn’t worried about Fable spending in isolation but the “total spend across all models.”
“A better way to read this graph,” he wrote, referring to the FT reporting, is ‘Fable is a great complement to the other models, which has increased overall revenue for Anthropic.’”

A headline recently published by Fast Company suggests that I might be surprised to find out which generation is most comfortable with AI, and I can assure the writer and editor of that piece that I am absolutely not surprised in any way to discover that Gen X is cool with it while the rest of us are ready to hang a chatbot in the town square.
According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, Americans are becoming more skeptical of artificial intelligence. Fifty-two percent now say they’re more concerned than excited about AI, up from 37 percent in 2021. Among people under 30, that number has reached 55 percent. But people ages 50 to 64, aka Gen Xers, are the only age group where a majority doesn’t describe itself as more concerned than excited.
This is where my completely anecdotal and scientifically useless theory comes in: Older people seem to have spent their lives being remarkably uncritical about new technology. Millennials and Gen Z, meanwhile, appear much more inclined to look at whatever Silicon Valley is currently selling as the Next Big Thing and see it for what it really is: marketing hype selling a product that’s probably more dangerous than it is helpful.
Meanwhile, and again this is purely anecdotal on my part, Gen Xers seem more inclined to view AI as more of a cool toy, and they can see downsides but aren’t terribly concerned about them. Or at least don’t think they outweigh the benefits.
Data centers consume enormous amounts of water? Yes, but the robot just gave me a delightful scrambled eggs recipe that uses the shell! Chatbots confidently invent information? Not according to the chatbot! Generative AI produces convincing fake images that can distort a person’s view of reality? Look! LOOK! The machine — no, I — made a picture of me as Superman!
That’s just my non-peer-reviewed theory. While younger Americans are increasingly worried that AI will eliminate jobs and wreck society as a whole, as it further damages interpersonal human connections and cheapens the very idea of human creative output, Gen Xers are clapping like happy seals in the comments section of an AI video. Meanwhile, according to the Pew survey, 72 percent of 50- to 64-year-olds think AI will lead to fewer jobs over the next 20 years, up from 69 percent who believed the same thing when the same survey was conducted in 2024.
The one silver lining is that only eight percent of Gen Xers surveyed were “more excited than concerned” about AI. Overall, though, the survey paints a picture of a generation that acknowledges a problem but just doesn’t care. It makes sense why. Again, anecdotally, they seem to have grown up more trusting of corporations, truly believing they have their best interests at heart.
When they’re told that every new tech innovation is just another tool in the toolbox, they seem to be the first ones eager to believe it, and the AI-generated pictures of friends and family members posted to Facebook depicting them on vacations they never went on are just a small price to pay for whatever damage they cause.
Kind of fitting for the generation best known for its apathy.

The AI data center construction boom is pulling skilled trades workers away from homebuilding, worsening an already severe labor shortage, according to Home Builders Institute CEO Ed Brady.
The US skilled trades industry is already short roughly 300,000 workers, and Brady says many who remain are shifting to data center construction jobs instead.

Companies continue to pour untold sums into adopting AI tools, in a generational industry capital allocation that has yet to meaningfully pay off.
Despite being sold as a way to supercharge productivity, theoretically allowing business leaders to boost earnings while cutting expenses, reality is telling a dramatically different story. One of the stories of the last few weeks has been that AI companies have been scanning books in very large numbers in order to train their models with content guaranteed to have been written before 2002, and thus AI free. It’s caused some outrage, because of the size of the operation, and because the scanning process is destructive. In particular the phrase being bandied around is that these are rare books, and it’s this phraseology I find problematic. I think it’s time to unpack why that is the case.
It’s Not Book Burning, Folks
Before I worked for Hackaday I had a long career in and around the publishing industry, mostly on the electronic side, but from time to time crossing paths with my colleagues in the world of paper-based publishing. I understand the appeal of a good book, I’ve spend a lot of my life among bibliophiles, and let’s just say I own a few books myself. In particular I understand the symbolism of destroying books, bringing to mind as it does the actions of repressive regimes. I have stood in Bebelplatz in Berlin where the photo of Nazi student organisation members burning the library of Magnus Hirschfeld’s institute was taken in 1933, and if you know me, you’ll have an idea why that’s close to home. But for all that, what the AI companies are doing is not the same thing.
In this case they’re destroying the books for two reasons. Firstly, as I remember from a previous employer in the publishing world, it’s much easier to digitise a stack of papers than it is a bound book. Thus I’m pretty sure that’s one reason they remove the binding before digitising the pages. Then secondly, as I understand it it’s a copyright issue. If they buy a book, digitise it, and destroy the physical copy, they can legitimately claim that only one copy of it exists, and they hope, sidestep copyright claims from publishers.

[Matt Lenhard] has an interesting writeup explaining exactly how fraudsters offer access to cutting-edge AI models at a tenth of the price. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the secret is to get tokens for free from anywhere they can and by any means necessary. Then wrap them in a pretty relay API, and sell access to it.
Relaying tokens is not by itself a shady practice. That distinction belongs to services that obtain tokens fraudulently, opening the door to selling them at rates far below market value. This practice is widespread and profitable, in part because the abuse is so hard to pin down and stop.
One source of tokens is free credits on new accounts. New accounts are spooled up as fast as possible, hammered until they’re empty, then it’s done all over again. Another method is to sign up as pay-after, possibly with a stolen card, and simply ensure the account has no valid payment method once the bill comes due. Or set up a temporary card, pay some minimum up front and consume as much as possible, then initiate a chargeback. It doesn’t matter if individually each of these doesn’t amount to much before they get flagged, because it’s being leveraged relentlessly on a massive scale by automated systems.
There are the shadier methods, too. Fraudsters don’t just target providers directly. Consumer software products with AI features get reverse-engineered, then the back ends hammered for all they are worth. Poorly-coded support chatbots can be highjacked into serving fraudsters’ traffic instead of just their own. It doesn’t actually matter where the tokens come from, after all. As long as the fraudsters are obtaining them for free (or at least below their costs) then it’s profit.
