AI trends 2026

Here are some of the the major AI trends shaping 2026 — based on current expert forecasts, industry reports, and recent developments in technology. The material is analyzed using AI tools and final version hand-edited to this blog text:

1. Generative AI Continues to Mature

Generative AI (text, image, video, code) will become more advanced and mainstream, with notable growth in:
* Generative video creation
* Gaming and entertainment content generation
* Advanced synthetic data for simulations and analytics
This trend will bring new creative possibilities — and intensify debates around authenticity and copyright.

2. AI Agents Move From Tools to Autonomous Workers

Rather than just answering questions or generating content, AI systems will increasingly act autonomously, performing complex, multi-step workflows and interacting with apps and processes on behalf of users — a shift sometimes called agentic AI. These agents will become part of enterprise operations, not just assistant features.

3. Smaller, Efficient & Domain-Specific Models

Instead of “bigger is always better,” specialized AI models tailored to specific industries (healthcare, finance, legal, telecom, manufacturing) will start to dominate in many enterprise applications. These models are more accurate, legally compliant, and cost-efficient than general models.

4. AI Embedded Everywhere

AI won’t be an add-on feature — it will be built into everyday software and devices:
* Office apps with intelligent drafting, summarization, and task insights
* Operating systems with native AI
* Edge devices processing AI tasks locally
This makes AI pervasive in both work and consumer contexts.

5. AI Infrastructure Evolves: Inference & Efficiency Focus

More investment is going into inference infrastructure — the real-time decision-making step where models run in production — thereby optimizing costs, latency, and scalability. Enterprises are also consolidating AI stacks for better governance and compliance.

6. AI in Healthcare, Research, and Sustainability

AI is spreading beyond diagnostics into treatment planning, global health access, environmental modeling, and scientific discovery. These applications could help address personnel shortages and speed up research breakthroughs.

7. Security, Ethics & Governance Become Critical

With AI handling more sensitive tasks, organizations will prioritize:
* Ethical use frameworks
* Governance policies
* AI risk management
This trend reflects broader concerns about trust, compliance, and responsible deployment.

8. Multimodal AI Goes Mainstream

AI systems that understand and generate across text, images, audio, and video will grow rapidly, enabling richer interactions and more powerful applications in search, creative work, and interfaces.

9. On-Device and Edge AI Growth

Processing AI tasks locally on phones, wearables, or edge devices will increase, helping with privacy, lower latency, and offline capabilities — especially crucial for real-time scenarios (e.g., IoT, healthcare, automotive).

10. New Roles: AI Manager & Human-Agent Collaboration

Instead of replacing humans, AI will shift job roles:
* People will manage, supervise, and orchestrate AI agents
* Human expertise will focus on strategy, oversight, and creative judgment
This human-in-the-loop model becomes the norm.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang says fears over AI data centers ecological and electrical footprint are overblown — and that they actually help local communities.

    Do you agree?

As the buildout of artificial intelligence infrastructure continues at a rapid pace, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang is pushing back against public concern over the ecological footprint of AI data centers. Critics and environmentalists have raised alarms that these massive facilities are straining local resources, but Huang argues the opposite.

According to the chipmaking giant’s leader, the unprecedented capital flowing into AI ‘factories’ provides the market momentum necessary to modernize aging power grids and scale up sustainable energy sources like solar and nuclear power, which he claims will ultimately drive down electricity costs for consumers in the long run.

Huang was equally dismissive of concerns regarding the industry’s water usage, labeling claims that AI is draining local water supplies as ‘a myth’.

He highlighted that modern data centers are moving away from traditional evaporative cooling systems in favor of closed-loop, recirculating hot-water designs. These newer setups recycle the same liquid continuously, resulting in negligible consumption compared to older facilities.

Despite these assurances from tech leaders, skepticism remains high, and community resistance is growing, with a recent poll showing that more than half of Americans still fear these massive operations will spike utility rates and deplete local aquifers.

It’s not just Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin looking to send data centers into orbit. Google is also looking to get in on the fun — and is now gearing up to launch a fridge-sized satellite with the equivalent computing power of a single server as soon as next week.

As the New York Times reports, the prototype satellite is part of the tech giant’s Project Suncatcher. As its name suggests, the goal is to take advantage of unfiltered sunlight around the clock to power AI data centers in our planet’s orbit — instead of crushing the electrical grid, spewing copious amounts of pollution, and draining fresh water supplies back on the ground.

Chat GPT and AI is here to stay – whether we like it or not. In the future, people fighting against it will look like the Luddites who protested cars, trains, the printing press… Don’t get swept into the debate; countries and regions who embrace data and have data centers will bring in money for the economy… I bet the online debate against AI is China sponsored. They would love us to hate data centers while they grow rich from building them…

But yes… 100%… read more paper books, go for a walk, love life – offline.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has said AI labs should not release models they cannot safely contain, arguing that containment must be solved before deployment.

Speaking with Ezra Klein on The New York Times’ The Ezra Klein Show, Huang said companies have the ability and responsibility to avoid launching unsafe products.

“If the AI labs say that there is no way to contain our experiments, when we test our AI models, it will get out and it will damage the world, then I think the answer is we have to shut the labs down,” Huang said. He also argued that containment is fundamentally an engineering problem that labs should solve.

Qualcommin uusin ajaa 30 miljardin parametrin AI-mallia kännykässä
    https://etn.fi/index.php/13-news/19338-qualcommin-uusin-ajaa-30-miljardin-parametrin-ai-mallia-kaennykaessae

Qualcomm tuo lippulaivapuhelimiin kaksi uutta Snapdragon-järjestelmäpiiriä. Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6:n kiinnostavin uudistus löytyy tekoälystä, sillä piiri pystyy ajamaan paikallisesti yli 30 miljardin parametrin Mixture of Experts -malleja. Qualcomm rakentaa samalla alustaa puhelimessa toimiville henkilökohtaisille AI-agenteille.

Qualcomm ilmoittaa sen tukevan yli 30 miljardin parametrin MoE- eli Mixture of Experts -malleja. MoE-rakenteessa kaikkia mallin parametreja ei käytetä jokaisen tehtävän suorittamiseen, vaan käyttöön valitaan kulloiseenkin tehtävään tarvittavat osat. Näin erittäin suuri malli voidaan ajaa huomattavasti pienemmillä laskenta- ja muistiresursseilla.

Uudessa Hexagon NPU:ssa on 50 prosenttia aiempaa enemmän jaettua muistia.

    https://www.uusiteknologia.fi/2026/09/24/fyysinen-tekoaly-avaa-uusia-mahdollisuuksia/

With so much hype about the future of AI safety, it can be easy to overlook the harms AI is causing in the here and now.

On the consumer side, the impact generative AI has on the developing mind is becoming increasingly clear: students are losing critical thinking skills as chatbots become cognitive crutches, spurning human friends in favor of AI companions, and even turning to self-harm when their AI-relationships go awry

Donald Trump’s $500 billion AI infrastructure project is in major trouble in New Mexico, as a pivotal data center project appears to be shriveling on the vine.

Early on Thursday, the AI company Oracle sent out a notice of “force majeure” to the Blue Owl Capital, the lender backing a massive hyperscale data center critical to the president’s ambitious AI project, Bloomberg reported.

Typically reserved for unexpected catastrophes like the outbreak of war, natural disaster, or massive social upheaval, Oracle invoked force majeure in order to shield itself from financial liability over the project’s failure to secure certain development permits.

Zooming out, the notice is being viewed by financial commentators as an attempt by Oracle to wriggle out of responsibility for upcoming payments in the increasingly likely event that the data center isn’t finished by 2028.

When — or if — the New Mexico facility goes online, the plan was for Oracle to become the primary tenant, making use of the facility’s 2.45 gigawatts of compute power for AI.

Now over half a year into the United States’ war on Iran, it’s becoming abundantly clear that AI has been instrumental to the American campaign.

On the home front, AI and its infrastructure is quietly shaping the ideological battlefield: President Donald Trump is spewing out wartime propaganda slopped together by generative AI, as US-owned data centers and tech company offices become widely accepted as military targets.

AI is also proving instrumental for helping US Central Command choose targets for obliteration via drone strikes or missiles — so much so that an AI system played a pivotal role in perpetuating an American war crime.

OpenAI is expanding beyond ChatGPT by offering AI solutions for specialized industries including chip design, life sciences and financial services. CFO Sarah Friar says the company is targeting businesses that want measurable results and lower AI costs.

OpenAI says its own AI models helped develop Jalapeño, its first custom AI inference chip, reaching the “tape-out” stage in just nine months. The chip is being developed with Broadcom and is designed specifically to improve AI performance and efficiency.

The company is also positioning its AI services as a cost-effective alternative to some open-source or open-weight models. Friar said OpenAI’s lower-cost Luna model can be cheaper to deploy than some Chinese open models through cloud services.

The move signals a broader strategy to build an AI full stack, from models and software to custom chips and data centers. OpenAI is increasingly competing not only with other AI labs, but also across the hardware and enterprise AI markets.
