AI trends 2026

Here are some of the the major AI trends shaping 2026 — based on current expert forecasts, industry reports, and recent developments in technology. The material is analyzed using AI tools and final version hand-edited to this blog text:

1. Generative AI Continues to Mature

Generative AI (text, image, video, code) will become more advanced and mainstream, with notable growth in:
* Generative video creation
* Gaming and entertainment content generation
* Advanced synthetic data for simulations and analytics
This trend will bring new creative possibilities — and intensify debates around authenticity and copyright.

2. AI Agents Move From Tools to Autonomous Workers

Rather than just answering questions or generating content, AI systems will increasingly act autonomously, performing complex, multi-step workflows and interacting with apps and processes on behalf of users — a shift sometimes called agentic AI. These agents will become part of enterprise operations, not just assistant features.

3. Smaller, Efficient & Domain-Specific Models

Instead of “bigger is always better,” specialized AI models tailored to specific industries (healthcare, finance, legal, telecom, manufacturing) will start to dominate in many enterprise applications. These models are more accurate, legally compliant, and cost-efficient than general models.

4. AI Embedded Everywhere

AI won’t be an add-on feature — it will be built into everyday software and devices:
* Office apps with intelligent drafting, summarization, and task insights
* Operating systems with native AI
* Edge devices processing AI tasks locally
This makes AI pervasive in both work and consumer contexts.

5. AI Infrastructure Evolves: Inference & Efficiency Focus

More investment is going into inference infrastructure — the real-time decision-making step where models run in production — thereby optimizing costs, latency, and scalability. Enterprises are also consolidating AI stacks for better governance and compliance.

6. AI in Healthcare, Research, and Sustainability

AI is spreading beyond diagnostics into treatment planning, global health access, environmental modeling, and scientific discovery. These applications could help address personnel shortages and speed up research breakthroughs.

7. Security, Ethics & Governance Become Critical

With AI handling more sensitive tasks, organizations will prioritize:
* Ethical use frameworks
* Governance policies
* AI risk management
This trend reflects broader concerns about trust, compliance, and responsible deployment.

8. Multimodal AI Goes Mainstream

AI systems that understand and generate across text, images, audio, and video will grow rapidly, enabling richer interactions and more powerful applications in search, creative work, and interfaces.

9. On-Device and Edge AI Growth

Processing AI tasks locally on phones, wearables, or edge devices will increase, helping with privacy, lower latency, and offline capabilities — especially crucial for real-time scenarios (e.g., IoT, healthcare, automotive).

10. New Roles: AI Manager & Human-Agent Collaboration

Instead of replacing humans, AI will shift job roles:
* People will manage, supervise, and orchestrate AI agents
* Human expertise will focus on strategy, oversight, and creative judgment
This human-in-the-loop model becomes the norm.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman isn’t afraid to throw humanity under the bus to build his dreams of a society powered by AI.

During an interview with Politico‘s new podcast Decoded, he laid it all out: that the “world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency.”

That, in Altman’s view, is what sets the ChatGPT maker apart from the competition — most notably Anthropic, which has long tried to paint itself as the responsible AI lab.

The bizarre missive comes as both companies have been embroiled in a number of high-profile incidents involving their AI agents breaking out of “sandbox” environments and hacking third party companies. Just last week, OpenAI announced that it had paused the development of its frontier AI models after its next-generation one showed too many signs of dangerous behavior.

With mounting pressure on AI labs to curb the many real-world harms their products cause consumers, it’s never been clearer that they’re monitoring users’ conversations.

Just ask Carli Michelle Heller, a woman arrested in Bonita Springs, Florida after allegedly telling Anthropic’s chatbot Claude about her plan to “shoot up” a nearby sheriff’s office.

According to WINK News, Heller was charged with making a written threat of violence — a second-degree felony in Florida — after Anthropic’s internal monitoring software flagged her chat logs for human review. After being viewed by a human employee at Anthropic, WINK reports, the company determined that Heller’s plans rose to the level of a credible threat, ultimately informing local police.

As Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno told local reporters in a statement, the woman admitted to using Claude like a “diary,” apparently unaware that her chat history could be read by Anthropic employees.

James Cameron has warned about the dangers of AI since The Terminator imagined machines turning against humanity in 1984. He later joked, “I warned you guys in 1984, and you didn’t listen.”

Today, Cameron’s biggest concern is not AI replacing jobs or creating movies, but its military use as a weapon. He fears countries could develop increasingly powerful AI systems to avoid falling behind their rivals.

Cameron compares a potential AI arms race to the nuclear arms race, where nations continuously strengthen their capabilities because of perceived threats. With AI already influencing warfare, cyber operations and military decision-making, his decades-old warning is becoming increasingly relevant.

There are a growing list of reasons not to want to live near an AI data center.

Some of them emit constant screeching noises that are impossible to drown out. Others rely on massive diesel generators that spew smog into the community and greenhouse emissions into the atmosphere. If you get particularly unlucky, your electricity bill could also go up as a result of a new data center setting up shop in your neighborhood.

And, if a recent report by the colorfully-named Texas-based advocacy group Collapse Survival Institute is anything to go by, living near a data center could be a matter of life and death as well.

The report, which was put together by retired Air Force colonel Drew Miller, quotes former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who left his post at the AI company earlier this year. Coxon drew widespread media attention for arguing that there was a greater than ten percent chance of AI ending humanity — incendiary comments that prompted widespread fears of a catastrophic singularity-like event.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but an AI model straight-up impersonating a humble cartoonist is probably not what that adage was going for.

When a kitschy cartoon tribute to the recently deceased Dolly Parton and Tim Curry — dressed as Dr Frank-N-Furter from the 1975 cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” — going to heaven together went viral, New Yorker cartoonist Brendan Loper started getting messages from friends, family, and fans about whether he made it. After all, there was his unmistakable signature right there in the bottom corner: “BLOPER.”

But he had nothing to do with the cartoon. Some grieving Parton fam had cooked it up in ChatGPT and posted it online, before it blew up.

“It was very surreal,” he told Nieman Lab.

ChatGPT, it turned out, has a predilection for crediting Loper for stuff he didn’t make. In May, someone warned him about another image created by the OpenAI chatbot that had his name on it.

Better learn about “brain privacy,” because it may soon go the way of the dodo.

Researchers have developed an AI tool that can predict what you’re looking at by analyzing your brain scans — and then generate a strikingly accurate recreation of what you’re picturing. It’s barely an exaggeration to say that it’s a “mind-reading” tool, though it currently doesn’t work as seamlessly as it might in a sci-fi novel.

“The results seem very impressive,” Tommy Sprague, a neuroscientist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, told MIT Tech Review. “But if there’s a way to surreptitiously extract information about what you’re thinking about, then… 150 years of sci-fi can come true anytime, and that’s worrisome in a lot of ways.”

Engineers in China’s Ningxia computing hub are deploying hollow-core fiber optic cables to address growing network congestion between data centers separated by more than 1,000 kilometers. Less than 0.4 millimeters in diameter, the fiber uses a hollow interior lined with 20 tiny glass cylinders to create a high-speed light pathway, reducing both transmission loss and latency by more than 30% compared to conventional solid-core fiber. The technology has already been deployed between data centers 30 kilometers apart. The urgency is real: even with high-grade conventional fiber, data transmission between Ningxia’s Zhongwei cluster and eastern demand centers takes around 20 milliseconds, too slow for latency-sensitive AI applications. Ningxia has already completed in one year all the construction originally planned for a five-year period, with 60 new data centers now planned, tripling the original target. Renewable energy currently accounts for 87.6% of electricity consumption at the region’s data centers.

Researchers In The United States have made a tiny flying robot dramatically faster by giving it an artificial-intelligence control system.

MIT researchers developed an AI system that allows a miniature flying robot to perform agile movements inspired by insects. The system increased the robot’s speed by about 450 percent and allowed it to perform multiple rapid somersaults.

The tiny machine is designed to operate at a scale where conventional aircraft-control methods become difficult. AI can help the robot react quickly to changes in movement and maintain stability during aggressive maneuvers.

The technology is still experimental, but miniature flying robots could eventually become useful for inspecting tight spaces, monitoring infrastructure or searching areas that are difficult for larger drones to enter.

The biggest challenges remain battery life, durability, autonomous navigation and safe operation around people.

Still, the research shows how AI is turning extremely small machines into increasingly capable flying systems.

AI book scammers are still thriving on Amazon’s marketplace.

Just a day after a new book about the AI industry’s race to build a powerful artificial general intelligence hit the shelves, its author Kevin Roose discovered that a scammer was already trying to trick his readers — by using AI.

On Amazon, an apparent machine-generated duplicate of the book, titled “The AGI Chronicles,” is freely circulating on the platform and even showing up right beneath the real deal in the e-commerce giant’s search results.

It looks a lot like the real thing, but is listed for a bargain $24.69 compared to the original book’s $30.00 — something that’s clearly intended to fool unsuspecting customers who are looking to save a few bucks.

These schemes have long plagued the platform, and despite years of reporting on the issue, little has been done to stop it. Some AI fabrications claim to be the biography of an author or other public figure — including, in a notable recent example, the NYT tech journalist Kashmir Hill. In an even more irony-laden case, Cory Doctorow’s book on “Enshittification” was instantly AI-duplicated on the day of its release.

Trump declares anyone who uses the term Artificial Intelligence to be ‘The Enemy!’
President’s latest outburst comes as his push to rebrand the emerging technology increasingly falls flat

President Donald Trump on Thursday opened up a new front in his ongoing war against commonly used terms and geographic names by warning that anyone referring to Large Language Models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude as “Artificial Intelligence” would earn themselves a place on his enemies list.

Writing on Truth Social, he declared that the White House “considers anyone that uses the term, ‘Artificial Intelligence,’ as opposed to the highly accepted new and more accurate term, ‘Super Intelligence,’ THE ENEMY!”

That widely mocked directive followed bizarre remarks to the U.N. General Assembly in which he declared that the U.S. “totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme” for regulating AI and declaring that the technology would be “hereinafter officially called super intelligence” because “use of the word artificial makes intelligence fake.”

“It makes it sound fake, and it is not fake. It’s actually amazing,” said Trump, who the week before had launched a poll in his Truth Social feed over the weekend asking respondents to vote for either “Super Intelligence,” “Superior Intelligence,” or “Extreme Intelligence.”

In recent months, that souring has shown up in nearly every poll that asks about AI. A Quinnipiac University survey of 1,032 registered voters taken late last month found 73 percent oppose “the building of an AI data center in your community,” including 55 percent of Republicans, and 79 percent said safety matters more than keeping the United States at the forefront of AI development.

Just 25 percent approve of Trump’s handling of the technology against 58 percent who disapprove, and 71 percent said they’d be more likely to back a candidate who supports “stricter guardrails” on it — a figure that includes a majority of Republicans, at 52 percent, and nearly three-quarters of independents.

A fully AI-generated feature film is set to get a theatrical release and has already been rated R, making it the first AI film to be blessed by an official MPA rating. And the studio behind the movie, titled “Gods Don’t Give Gifts,” is even gearing up for an awards push.

But whether it looks any better than all the slop that AI art has become known for is up for debate.

Adobe in Trouble After Someone Reverse Engineered Adobe Creative Suite and Released It as Open Source

For years, illustrators, photographers, designers, and video editors have been held under the thumb of a single software company: Adobe.

The infamous Adobe Creative Suite, later rebranded as the Creative Cloud — a change which brought about an end to true offline use — has long dogged creatives with its incredibly high subscription fees, representing an ironclad grip on the world of artists and other creatives.

Though plenty of competitors have tried to ram their way into the market, few have been able to make a dent against the dominant Creative Cloud. That may be about to change — and not because of a tech giant like Apple, but thanks to the efforts of a four-person team vibecoding out of Atlanta, Georgia.

Introducing ArtCraft: a new free and open-source software suite for creatives whose apps bear a striking similarity to Adobe’s perennial editing tools.

There are a few caveats here. For starters, the ArtCraft apps are all in active development, with a few tools in the “early alpha” stage, meaning a professional user is probably stuck with Adobe for the time being. The apps are also packed with various AI offerings, so anybody seeking the manual Creative Suite experience of yesteryear will probably have to dodge some prompt windows, though AI use is by no means required by ArtCraft’s apps.

The vibe-coded nature of the project has likewise given some pause — as one user commented on the “FuckAdobe” subreddit, it’s a “very impressive” effort, but though “AI makes it much easier to build prototypes quickly,” they aren’t “necessarily polished, stable products.”

AI developers spend fortunes training their models. By asking the models enough questions, rivals can copy that work through a technique known as distillation.

In September Anthropic and OpenAI accused Chinese AI developers of mining their models’ answers to train cheaper copycats. Here’s how distillation works and why it’s so hard to stop. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-is-ai-model-distillation-and-why-is-it-so-hard-to-stop/

AI is primarily a two-horse race. The U.S. and China control 90% of global computing power, attract between 70% and 80% of global investment in AI, and have huge concentrations of talented AI researchers. That creates a world in which other countries are dependent on the U.S. and China for access to AI systems. And both the U.S. and China have shown a willingness to use that access for leverage. That puts most of the Global South in an uncomfortable position. And the middle powers remain exposed to the disruptions that AI could cause, even if they don’t necessarily capture the benefit. So they’re still exposed to job-related disruption, the social effects of AI systems.
