Coding trends 2026

In the tech world, there is a constant flow of changes and keeping up with them means the choice for tools and technologies which are the most appropriate to invest your time in.

In 2026 the best programming language or technology stack to learn really depends on your personal aims, hobbies, and apps you are going to create.

The use of AI is increasing. AI as a “Pair Programmer” is becoming the default. Code completion, refactoring, and boilerplate generation are used often. Devs spend more time reviewing and steering code than typing it. “Explain this error” and “why is this slow?” prompts are useful.

In prompt-Driven Development programmers describe the intent in natural language and then let AI generate first drafts of functions, APIs, or configs. Iterate by refining prompts rather than rewriting code. Trend: Knowing how to ask is becoming as important as syntax.

Strong growth in: Auto-generated unit and integration tests and edge-case discovery. Trend: “Test-first” is easier when AI writes the boring parts.

AI is moving up the stack. Trend: AI as a junior architect or reviewer, not the final decider.

AI comes to Security & Code Quality Scanning. Rapid adoption in: Static analysis and vulnerability detection, secret leakage and dependency risk checks. AI can give secure-by-default code suggestions. Trend: AI shifts security earlier in the SDLC (“shift left”).

Instead of one-off prompts: AI agents that plan → code → test → fix → retry. Multi-step autonomous tasks (e.g., “add feature X and update docs”) can be done in best cases. Trend: Still supervised, but moving toward semi-autonomous dev loops.

AI is heavily used for explaining large, unfamiliar codebases and translating between languages/frameworks. It helps onboarding new engineers faster.

What’s changing: Less manual boilerplate work
More focus on problem definition, review, and decision-making. There is stronger emphasis on fundamentals, architecture, and domain knowledge. Trend: Devs become editors, designers, and orchestrators.

AI usage policies and audit trails is necessary. Trend: “Use AI, but safely.”

Likely directions:
Deeper IDE + CI/CD integration
AI maintaining legacy systems
Natural-language → production-ready features
AI copilots customized to your codebase

Software developer Brandon Thomas has used Anthropic’s Claude to build free, open-source alternatives to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The new apps, called WordCraft, GridCraft, and DeckCraft, are available on GitHub.

Thomas, who has 15 years of software engineering experience, previously created ArtCraft, a collection of free alternatives to Adobe’s creative software.

His goal is to challenge expensive software subscriptions and give users more control over the tools they use.

While the apps are still in early development and lack many features of established products, the project shows how AI can help individual developers build software.

Linux Kernel Drops AI Tag Requirement, Uses Meta AI For Code Reviews
    https://hackaday.com/2026/10/15/linux-kernel-drops-ai-tag-requirement-uses-meta-ai-for-code-reviews/

Since we last covered the way that the Linux Kernel project has been dealing with the influx of code created using LLM-based coding assistants, all the way back in April, things have changed a lot, with most recently the Linux maintainers deciding to fully drop the requirement to mark LLM-assisted commits with the Assisted-by tag.

While not a fully uncontroversial decision – as also reported by Phoronix – with key maintainers already having made this decision it seems certain to proceed. This is not the only change made fairly recently, with a ‘Sashiko’ bot introduced that is supposed to handle code reviews.

Google debuts TorchTPU, an open-source version of PyTorch for running AI apps on TPUs and Google Cloud via a simple configuration change and no code rewriting — On Tuesday, Google announced that TorchTPU, its long-awaited version of PyTorch, is now available as an open-source project.

Google has joined Amazon in attacking Nvidia’s stronghold with AI app developers

On Tuesday, Google announced that TorchTPU, its long-awaited version of PyTorch, is now available as an open source project. With this, Google joins Amazon in trying to break Nvidia’s stranglehold on the AI industry, where most AI apps are written by default to run on Nvidia’s chips, or GPUs.

PyTorch is the popular open source toolkit that AI app developers and startups use to build, train, and run AI models. It is, by some accounts, used by 85% of the AI apps. PyTorch was originally developed by Meta (then Facebook) in 2016, long before the world had an inkling that LLMs would change the world. At the time, Nvidia’s GPUs were already the standard hardware for AI research, so many of PyTorch’s features were built to work specifically with them. In 2022, Meta turned PyTorch over to the Linux Foundation, a nonprofit that manages many important open source projects.

Google’s version, TorchTPU, lets AI apps run on Google’s AI chips, called Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). It also makes it easy to move existing PyTorch apps to TPUs and, therefore, to Google Cloud. Developers can do this with a simple configuration change and no rewriting of their apps.

Amazon made a similar announcement Monday, when it released its own version of PyTorch, called TorchNeuron. TorchNeuron allows AI apps to be ported to Amazon’s homegrown AI chip, Trainium, and to AWS with no rewriting. Amazon also said it’s going even further in its effort to loosen Nvidia’s hold on PyTorch. It is submitting code to the main PyTorch project that decouples various features from Nvidia’s chips, making it more open to any hardware by default.

Google may be one-upping Amazon in a few ways, however. It says it worked directly with Meta, Hugging Face, Inferact (maker of vLLM), RadixArk (maker of SGLang), and others to ensure that TorchTPU’s features and code libraries work well with these popular AI development tools, just as the original PyTorch does.

Plus the search giant has launched a dedicated tool, the TPU agent suite, to help developers move their apps to Google’s chips and cloud and fix errors along the way. It even updated its popular LiteRT tool, which runs AI on phones, laptops, and embedded devices, to work better with PyTorch AI apps.

BashBox is a bash interpreter written in pure PHP by Pushpak Chhajed, who also built the Grant roles and permissions package. It runs scripts that AI agents generate without calling proc_open, exec, or shell_exec. Each command is a PHP class that works against a virtual filesystem, and every execution runs under limits you can configure.

AWS Lambda announces Lambda Web Functions
    Posted on: Oct 12, 2026
AWS Lambda announces Lambda Web Functions, a new serverless compute primitive where your code handles HTTP requests directly. Your code listens on a port and handles requests as it would on any HTTP server. You use frameworks you already know, such as Express or Hono, with no adapters or custom configuration. This enables you to serve workloads such as AI inference endpoints, server-side rendered (SSR) web apps, streaming API endpoints, microservices, and webhooks.
