    Hyökkäys tapahtui sunnuntain ja maanantain välisenä yönä 11.–12. lokakuuta. Hyökkääjät käynnistivät kauppojen kylmälaitteiden automaattisen sulatuksen, ja osassa kauppoja laitteet pysyivät kuumina kuusi tuntia. Hyökkäys aiheutti myös tulipaloja.

    Tiistaina julkaistujen tarkentuneiden tietojen mukaan hyökkäyksen kohteeksi joutui noin 300 Intermarché- ja Netto-ketjujen kauppaa, noin sata Coopérative U -myymälää, 80 Carrefouria, noin 30 Monoprix’tä sekä useita E.Leclerc-ketjun kauppoja.

    Ranskan kauppaketjujen AFP:lle antamien tietojen perusteella kyberhyökkäys kohdistui yhteensä arviolta 500 myymälään. Tarkkaa kokonaismäärää ei ole vahvistettu.

    Le Monden mukaan hyökkääjät eivät ainoastaan nostaneet lämpötiloja, vaan muuttivat myös sulatusjakson kestoa yhdestä tunnista kahdeksaan tuntiin. Näin kylmälaitteiden hälytykset käynnistyivät tavallista myöhemmin ja vahingot maksimoituivat.

    Intermarchén toimitusjohtaja Thierry Cotillard arvioi BFMTV:lle, että hyökkäyksen aiheuttamat tappiot voivat nousta koko Ranskassa kymmeniin miljooniin euroihin. AFP:n haastatteleman kauppiaan mukaan vakuutus ei korvaa tämänkaltaisia tappioita.

    Danfossin mukaan hyökkäyksen kohteeksi joutuneissa laitteissa käytettiin vanhentuneita ohjelmistoja. Yhtiö kertoo The Guardianille kehottaneensa asiakkaitaan päivittämään järjestelmänsä ja vaihtamaan vanhentuneet laitteet uusiin. Danfoss oli julkaissut tietoturvavaroituksia kylmälaitteiden ohjausjärjestelmien haavoittuvuuksista maalis- ja elokuussa 2025.

    Ranskan kaupan alan järjestö FCD on vaatinut Danfossilta täydellistä avoimuutta hyökkäyksen selvittämisessä. Osa kaupoista on jo saanut laitteistonsa takaisin toimintaan, mutta kaikkien toimintojen palautuminen voi kestää päiviä, kertoo Reuters.

    Sekoia-tietoturvayhtiön asiantuntija Félix Aimé kertoi Reutersille, että hyökkäys on kohdistunut myös Espanjaan, Portugaliin, Puolaan, Saksaan ja Belgiaan.

    Tiistaiaamuun 13. lokakuuta mennessä yksikään hakkeriryhmä ei ollut ilmoittautunut hyökkäyksen tekijäksi.

    Five things I’d rather see built than another AI data center.

    Call me old-fashioned, but not every empty piece of land needs to turn into a giant building full of computers. I’m all for progress, but I’d sure love to see more American manufacturing, small businesses, family farms, and investments in the working class.

    I know it takes skilled tradespeople to build those data centers. They’re not the problem.

    And yes, I understand the irony of posting this on social media, which also relies on data centers. But using something doesn’t mean you can’t question how much of it we really need.

    What would you rather see built instead of another AI data center or do you want them?
