CES 2023

The Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, is held every year in Las Vegas. The world’s biggest annual consumer technology show is ready and raring to welcome back thousands of exhibitors and media to Las Vegas in the first week of the year. CES 2023 will host around 2,400 exhibitors. CES is typically where many of these technology brands pull back the curtain on their latest innovations and reveal the best of their products coming that year. At the year’s biggest tech show, we’ll see next-gen TVs, stylish laptop updates, questionable smart home tech, and a lot of strange and surprising gadgets.

Technology’s biggest trade show must go on, in spite of rough economic headwinds. CES® is the most influential tech event in the world according to it’s own words — the proving ground for breakthrough technologies and global innovators. This is where the world’s biggest brands do business and meet new partners, and the innovators hit the stage. Owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, CES features every aspect of the tech sector.

CES officially takes place between Thursday 5th and Sunday 8th January 2023, though the ‘Media Days’ – when most product news announcements break – are being held two days prior on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th.

Intel announced on Tuesday that it has added Intel Trust Domain Extensions (TDX) to its confidential computing portfolio with the launch of its new 4th Gen Xeon enterprise processors.
The chip giant has launched the 4th Gen Xeon scalable CPUs, codenamed Sapphire Rapids, alongside the Intel Xeon CPU Max series, codenamed Sapphire Rapids HBM, and the Data Center GPU Max series, codenamed Ponte Vecchio.
4th Gen Intel Xeon processorAccording to Intel, the new products bring increased performance in AI, analytics, networking, security, storage, and high performance computing (HPC).
In terms of security, Intel puts the spotlight on confidential computing, with the company’s portfolio being expanded to include Intel TDX, which isolates data and code in use at the virtual machine level using hardware-isolated trust domains.
TDX allows users to deploy existing applications into a confidential environment for increased privacy and compliance. The feature will be available through cloud providers such as Microsoft, Google, IBM and Alibaba, in many cases through a simple setting in a cloud configurator.
Intel says TDX gives users confidentiality from the cloud provider and other cloud tenants, while helping them ensure compliance with data privacy and governance regulations.

Jennifer Pattison Tuohy / The Verge:
An overview of the adoption of Matter, the new open-source smart home interoperability standard, across the devices and controllers on display at CES 2023

    Why Matter mattered at CES
    https://www.theverge.com/23547154/matter-smart-home-new-devices-ces-2023

We round up all the new product announcements and look at what’s next for Matter as companies start to monetize this newfound interoperability.

From Central Hall to The Venetian, Matter was the buzzword throughout CES 2023 this year, with most companies even remotely connected to the smart home loudly discussing their Matter plans (although a few were more subdued). The new smart home standard was featured in several keynotes and displayed prominently in smart home device makers’ booths as well as in Google, Amazon, and Samsung’s big, showy displays.

More importantly, dozens of companies and manufacturers announced specific plans. Several companies said they would update entire product lines, while others announced new ones, sometimes with actual dates and prices. And Matter controllers have become a major thing, with at least four brand-new ones debuting at CES. Interestingly, nearly all of them have a dual or triple function, helping banish the specter of seemingly pointless white hubs stuck in your router closet.

Its undeniable momentum at the biggest consumer tech show of the year is one reason we named Matter The Verge’s “best in show” for CES 2023. And here, we’ve rounded up all the announcements from the show that, well, matter.

If a device supports Matter, it will work locally with Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, Apple Home, Google Home, and any other smart home platform that supports Matter. It will also be controllable by any of the four voice assistants.

However, Matter is still totally unproven, as there are very few devices anyone can actually get their hands on to test, so there is a lot of speculation still as to just how effective it will be. Plus, the initial Matter rollout since the launch in November has been complicated.

The big four have turned on Matter support on their platforms, but Amazon’s approach has been piecemeal, and aside from Apple, nobody supports onboarding devices to Matter on iOS yet.

However, that is shifting: at CES, Amazon announced a full rollout by spring, and Samsung’s Jaeyeon Jung told The Verge that Matter support is coming to its iOS app this month. There’s still no news on Matter support in Google Home’s iOS app. Then there’s the whole competing Thread network issue, although that sounds like it will be resolved sooner rather than later.

Analysis: cybersecurity startups raised $15.3B in 2022, down by a third from a record $22.8B raised in 2021 but still 68% higher than the $9.1B raised in 2020

Venture To Cybersecurity Drops By A Third
    https://news.crunchbase.com/cybersecurity/venture-to-cybersecurity-drops-by-a-third/

Venture capital in cybersecurity hit a record high in 2021 — like it did in many industries — but last year could not come close to matching those peak times.

Funding to cybersecurity startups dropped by a third in 2022, according to Crunchbase data. While 2021 saw a record $22.8 billion roll into startups in the sector, that number fell to $15.3 billion last year.

However, the 2022 venture total still represents a 68% increase from 2020 — which until last year was the high-water mark for venture funding in the industry.

The downside, however, is that investment dollars trended downward as the past year went on — something that may not bode well for startups in 2023.

The fourth quarter saw only $2.4 billion go to cyber startups, the lowest amount of venture investment in the sector since the third quarter of 2020 — which saw $1.6 billion invested — according to Crunchbase data.

After years of delays, Intel formally launched its fourth-gen Xeon Scalable Sapphire Rapids CPUs, in both regular and HBM-infused Max flavors, and its “Ponte Vecchio” Data Center GPU Max Series today. Intel’s expansive portfolio of 52 new CPUs will face off with AMD’s EPYC Genoa lineup that debuted last year. The company also slipped in a low-key announcement of its last line of Optane Persistent Memory DIMMs.

While AMD’s chips maintain the core count lead with a maximum of 96 cores on a single chip, Intel’s Sapphire Rapids chips bring the company up to a maximum of 60 cores, a 50% improvement over its previous peak of 40 cores with the third-gen Ice Lake Xeons. Intel claims this will lead to a 53% improvement in general compute over its prior-gen chips, but largely avoided making direct comparisons to AMD’s chips during its presentations. However, Intel has provided samples to the press for unrestricted third-party reviews, so it isn’t shying away from the competition.

The conceptual i Vision DEE car developed by BMW features E Ink Prism 3, a display that changes colors in real-time (see image above). Overall, eight colors are available in E Ink Prism 3, and they’re combined with patterns to produce rich, dynamic surfaces. Thanks to its bistable technology, E Ink consumes minimal power and is energy-efficient.

The surface of BMW’s concept car, showcased at CES 2023, contains tiny programmable capsules full of electro-active pigments that change color in response to an applied current. Users can switch the car’s color through a smartphone app. According to BMW, the car displays 32 colors via the 240 E Ink panels, which means there’s lots of potential for multicolor pattern production.

Intel Launches $699 Core i9-13900KS, the World’s First 6 GHz 320W CPU: Available Now
By Paul Alcorn published about 5 hours ago
Fastest desktop CPU in history, and also the most power hungry.
    https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-launches-dollar699-core-i9-13900ks-the-worlds-first-6-ghz-cpu-available-now

It may not be quite the 30 GHz that Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger predicted back in 2002, but Intel’s Core i9-13900KS Special Edition processor, which is available on shelves today for $699, is the world’s first consumer CPU to run at 6 GHz without overclocking. With a whopping 250W base power specification, it’s also now officially the most power-hungry desktop CPU in history — it peaks at 320W in a new Extreme Power Delivery Profile.

Notably, the 13900KS’ peak of 6 GHz is 300 MHz faster than the 5.7 GHz for AMD’s Ryzen 7000 processors, but AMD has a special series of Ryzen 7000X3D chips that will square off with the 13900KS for the title of the world’s fastest gaming CPU.

AMD’s competing chips arrive next month,

The Core i9-13900KS is functionally identical to the current fastest gaming chip in the world, the 13900K, but the extra ‘S’ in the name denotes that this is premium-binned silicon that hits 6 GHz on two cores — 200 MHz faster than the 12900K.

The chip also has a 150W Processor Base Power (PBP) rating, which is 25W higher than the 13900K, also making it the world’s most power-hungry desktop PC processor at its base TDP. Intel has specified the Maximum Turbo Power (MTP) spec at 253W but has a new Extreme Power Delivery Profile that enables that up to 320W with an ICCMax of 400A. The processor is fully warrantied to run at this peak power consumption.

Intel recently demoed the chip hitting 6 GHz on two cores with standard off-the-shelf Corsair AIO water cooling, but didn’t specify the size of the cooler (the company has clarified that it sees “good performance with a 360mm AIO cooler”). The chip’s peak frequency relies on Intel’s Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB) tech, meaning the chip will have to be below a pre-defined temperature (70C) to hit the 6 GHz peak. Naturally, systems with custom watercooling will extract the biggest benefit.

The Intel Core i9-13900K recently took the all-time frequency world record of 8.812 GHz, dethroning the previous record holder, AMD’s legendary FX-8370, by 90 MHz. Intel selects its premium-binned 13900K silicon for the 13900KS, so it is guaranteed to be among the very best silicon the company has to offer. That will make the chips very attractive to overclockers, as paying the extra $110 for the KS model improves your odds in the silicon lottery and essentially assures that you’re getting a cherry chip

Snapdragon Satellite Communication Open to Everyone
    Jan. 12, 2023
At CES 2023, Qualcomm presented satellite-communication technology that will be available for mobile devices.
    https://www.electronicdesign.com/technologies/communications/article/21257954/electronic-design-snapdragon-satellite-communication-open-to-everyone

Companies from all over the world unveiled their latest innovative tech at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Among that tech includes Qualcomm’s just-announced Snapdragon Satellite, an integrated circuit designed to enable satellite connectivity in mobile devices.

The satellite connectivity is made available not only by the chipset, but through a partnership with Iridium, a satellite company that’s been putting satellites into orbit since the 1990s. Iridium currently operates a network of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites that orbit approximately 485 miles above the Earth.

Wireless communications operate at L-band frequencies, which are located in the 1- to 2-GHz frequency range. This yields multiple benefits. First, it allows for a small antenna size—a critical feature for mobile devices. Second, it’s more resilient to attenuation due to weather conditions, unlike other satellite communications. Overall, the constellation creates a global mesh that allows for coverage from anywhere on earth with clear visibility of the sky.

The service is similar to what Apple offers with its latest iPhone. In addition, T-Mobile is exploring a partnership with Space-X to enable emergency communications in remote locations. The difference Qualcomm and Iridium are offering, though, is that any device using the chipset would be capable of satellite communications

The way the service will work is by a user first inputting the message they desire to send. Next, the phone will prompt the user to point the phone to the sky and turn to locate a satellite. The message can then be sent, which will nominally take a few seconds after a satellite is found. The data transfer is limited to 140 bytes, which will only permit short text messages to be sent. However, two-way messaging isn’t limited to emergency-only use. Thus, it can provide a means of temporary or brief communication to users in remote locations.

Any device looking to utilize the Snapdragon Satellite service also must be equipped with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. This processor provides the modem needed for signal processing for satellite communications. While some of the upcoming high-end Android phones will come equipped with the latest Snapdragon processor, they will not yet be capable of satellite communications. The earliest we can expect to see phones with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Satellite support will be in the latter half of 2023.

HDMI-signaali USBC-liitännän yli? Nyt idea on hylätty
    https://etn.fi/index.php/13-news/14461-hdmi-signaali-usbc-liitaennaen-yli-nyt-idea-on-hylaetty

Alternate mode eli ”vaihtoehtoinen moodi” on tekniikka, jonka avulla näyttösignaaleja voidaan siirtää fyysisesti C-tyypin USB-liitännän yli.

Toinen syy löytyy HDMI Alt Moden vajavaisuudesta.

Uusista suorittimista M2 Pro on 40 miljardin transistorin suoritin, jossa eri ytimillä on käytössään jopa 32 gigatavua yhtenäistä muistia. Ytimille dataa haetaan 200 gigatavun kaistalla.

Intelin Core i9 -prosessorilla varustettuun Macbook Pro -koneeseen verrattuna nopeus on kasvanut 80 prosenttia. Lähes samanlaiset parannukset on saatu koodin kääntämiseen.

At CES, Senior Editor David Maliniak caught up with Grace Burkard, Director of Operations at the ioXt Alliance. She discusses the fragmentation of standards between industries, countries, and types of products, which makes it difficult for manufacturers to achieve certification.

Burkard stresses the need for transparency between standards and explains that ioXt Alliance-certified products have a QR code a company can display on the product or website.

“A consumer can come up, scan it, and it will take them directly to their product page,” said Burkard. “And it shows what levels they need for their security.”

In the consumer electronics world, one of the hottest technologies around is Matter. It’s a protocol that offers the promise of true interoperability amongst smart-home devices, no matter what branding they carry, and across the various smart-home control platforms like Google Nest Hub or Amazon Echo. A critical element underlying Matter is Thread, itself a wireless networking protocol that defines how devices connect with each other in a mesh networking scheme.

At CES 2023, the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) showcased its AV-21 autonomous race car at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Overall, nine teams participated in the race, hoping to set new autonomous racing records. The IAC competition involves a single elimination tournament with multiple rounds of high-speed head-to-head passing matches with the race cars, ending in a championship round.

Global universities programmed these autonomous racing cars with open-source hardware, including ROS 2 (Robot Operating System). Generally, ROS 2 is applied in other robotic systems; it can present some challenges for autonomous cars. That’s why Apex.AI built a ROS 2 version that meets the requirements for a successful run. It generally features ROS 2 and ROS middleware improvements that meet performance requirements for the IAC
