Video conversion tools

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

SUPER (Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer) is a GUI to many video tools. If you need a simple, yet very efficient tool to convert (encode) any Multimedia file, without reading manuals or spending long hours training, then SUPER © is all you need. The supported tools include o FFmpeg, MEncoder, MPlayer, x264, musepack, monkey’s audio, true audio, wavpack, ffmpeg2theora and the theora/vorbis RealProducer plugIn. SUPER runs on Windows and the installation packet includes both GUI and the needed video encoding/decoding tools.

Other useful program is VLC media player. It is a cross-platform open-source multimedia framework, player and server. I use this normally for video playback. VLC is capable of reading most audio and video formats, also various streaming protocols. It also can also be used as a media converter or a video stream server.

LED vs Fluorescent Tubes

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Are LED Fluorescent Tubes Ready for Prime Time? I got a mail on interesting survey is on LED vs Fluorescent Tubes at http://www.softwareadvice.com/articles/construction/are-led-fluorescent-tubes-ready-for-prime-time-1041920/. The survey concentrates specifically, if LED tubes are ready for widespread commercial use, and if they will replace fluorescent tubes. The writer of that blog is reaching out to a few bloggers to help drive more responses, including my blog (I got mail). The background article Are LED Fluorescent Tubes Ready for Prime Time? has good information on it, so it is good reading, including the comments. Read the article and take the survey if this topic interests you. The blog has promised survey results next week.

That Lost 4G Phone

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

It has been hard to miss the story of the Apple engineer who left a rumored prototype of 4G iPhone at a beer garden. Some time later Gizmodo got hold of that 4G iPhone and posted a report on it on-line (interesting stuff). Scott Adams, the man behind Dilbert comic has made a two comic strips on this incident to his blog. That Lost 4G Phone posting contains those first drafts of those comics. Note that there was no need to add anything to the story as it has been told in the media (media’s speculation of events) and it is funny. Brilliant!

TDR circuit modification idea

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

You might know my Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) signal source circuit published on ePanorama.net many years ago. It has worked well for me many times.

tdr_small

Some years ago I made a modification to my own TDR unit. This simple modification allows me to use the same box also as a signal source with a wide frequency range (kHz to almost 30 MHz) and controllable output impedance. This kind of square wave signal source is useful for all kinds of testing.

The TDR circuit shown above can be modified to a square wave signal source by modifying the oscillator part of the circuit (R1, R2, D1, one gate of IC1 and capacitor C1..C5). This oscillator is pretty normal square wave oscillator circuit with just D1 and R2 as extra. So if you leave out D1 from the circuit you get square wave signals. If the D1 is just removed the oscillator outputs square wave at frequency range from few kHz to few hundred kHz (frequency controlled by R1 and capacitor).  If you replace the D1 with a short circuit you get higher frequency from hundred kHz to almost 30 MHz (frequency controlled by R1+R2 in parallel and the capacitor). If you leave the D1 as it is, the circuit works as TDR signal source.

The modification needed to add all this new functionality and still keep old things working is to add one three position changeover switch (onA-off-onB) to the circuit. Just wire it in such way that you get all the D1 as it is (=TDR), D1 open circuit (=low frequency) and D1 short circuit (=high frequency) settings.

Transparent Car Video

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Shell Corporation has an interesting advertisement for their Helix oil. Transparent Nissan 370Z is the star in this sweet engine oil ad. Shell Helix Ultra Transparent Car – The Making Of video shows you the ad and also gives you information how this is made. They use a plastic/pyrex model that simply illustrates how oil is distributed throughout the engine and its components. Cool looking results. It is really cool to see these individual parts moving around.

JavaScript frameworks

Comparison of JavaScript frameworks is a table that shows the features of the most commonly used JavaScript frameworks. It is an incomplete table, but as it is a good starting point. My favourite is jQuery.

Mosaic Browser was a start

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Wired article April 22, 1993: Mosaic Browser Lights Up Web With Color, Creativity tells that NCSA Mosaic 1.0, the first web browser to achieve popularity among the general public, was released this day 1993. The web in the early 1990s was mostly text. NCSA Mosaic was the first web browser with the ability to display text and images inline, meaning you could put pictures and text on the same page together, in the same window.

It was a radical step forward for the web. I remember seeing that web browser pretty soon after the release at the Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University) Unix computers.

And pretty soon I started working on my own web pages. It was time to forget playing with Gopher. I saw that web page with graphics are the future. I started browsing web actively.

And pretty soon I also discovered that web browser bookmarks has one problem: I could access them only on the computer I stored them to (and there were many separate computer systems at the University and also the computers at home). Instead of storing my bookmarks to one computer it was a good idea to put my best links to a WWW page, so I could easily use them everywhere from different computer. This how my electronics web links collection started. Those pages have over the time transformed to ePanorama.net.

Piano glove

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Imagine, putting on a glove and you can play the piano. Colorado State University students have created such a glove that detects the bend of a finger and plays a corresponding piano note. Gadget Freak Case #162: Magic Fingers Tickle the Ivories article tells you the details of their design. There is also a video that shows this special piano in operation.

LEDs category created

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

I have been posted many articles related to LED lighting. And I think I will post more articles related to this quickly evolving field of electronics. So I created a category LEDs for all articled related to LED technologies.
