I am living in the middle of the emergency over coronavirus in Finland. Due this reason the update cycle to make posting to this blog could be slowed down.
The Finnish government announced on Monday nationwide school closures in order to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. Read more on the following aricles:

Q&A: We have to rethink disease detection to get ahead of the outbreak after coronavirus
https://horizon-magazine.eu/article/qa-we-have-rethink-disease-detection-get-ahead-outbreak-after-coronavirus.html#utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=share&utm_campaign=disease_detection
We know that outbreaks like coronavirus will become more common in the future and tackling them is the Apollo programme of our time, according to Professor Marion Koopmans, head of the viroscience department at Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
What is an emerging disease?
‘These tend to be diseases that are circulating in human or animal populations to a degree, but when there is a change of some sort, it leads to an outbreak. In the case of the Covid-19, for example, it jumped the species barrier from animals to become a new virus in humans.’
Why do new diseases like this emerge?
‘When we reconstruct what has happened in emerging disease outbreaks, what we see is that something has changed. More and more humans share the world, and as we try to feed and accommodate them, it leads to habitat loss for wild animals.
‘This disturbance can lead to a change in animal behaviour that brings them into closer contact with humans.
‘Climate change also has an impact on (existing) diseases by allowing them to move into new areas.

The world could soon run out of space to store oil. That may plunge prices below zero
https://edition.cnn.com/2020/04/01/business/oil-prices-crash-storage-space/index.html
The world’s thirst for oil has evaporated.
Highways are empty. Planes are grounded. Factories are dark. The unprecedented collapse in oil demand has sent crude crashing to 18-year lows.
Supply, on the other hand, remains largely resilient amid a price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia. US producers don’t want to be the first to blink by turning off production.
That could mean a supply glut so epic that the world will soon run out of room to store all the unneeded barrels of oil.
This oil glut is creating a scenario where some obscure grades of oil already have actually dropped below zero.
Of course, the weak demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic won’t last forever.
Eventually, airlines will take to the air again and start buying jet fuel. American drivers will buy more gasoline as they get back to work.
But by that point the oil industry might not be producing as much oil as before because wells shut down.

Why the Global Recession Could Last a Long Time
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/01/business/economy/coronavirus-recession.html
Fears are growing that the worldwide economic downturn could be especially deep and lengthy, with recovery limited by continued anxiety.
The world is almost certainly ensnared in a devastating recession delivered by the coronavirus pandemic.
Now, fears are growing that the downturn could be far more punishing and long lasting than initially feared — potentially enduring into next year, and even beyond — as governments intensify restrictions on business to halt the spread of the pandemic, and as fear of the virus reconfigures the very concept of public space, impeding consumer-led economic growth.
The pandemic is above all a public health emergency. So long as human interaction remains dangerous, business cannot responsibly return to normal. And what was normal before may not be anymore. People may be less inclined to jam into crowded restaurants and concert halls even after the virus is contained.
Stock markets have reflected the economic alarm.
Among investors, a hopeful scenario holds currency: The recession will be painful but short-lived, giving way to a robust recovery this year. The global economy is in a temporary deep freeze, the logic goes. Once the virus is contained, enabling people to return to offices and shopping malls, life will snap back to normal. Jets will fill with families going on merely deferred vacations. Factories will resume, fulfilling saved up orders.
But even after the virus is tamed — and no one really knows when that will be — the world that emerges is likely to be choked with trouble, challenging the recovery. Mass joblessness exacts societal costs. Widespread bankruptcy could leave industry in a weakened state, depleted of investment and innovation.
Households may remain agitated and risk averse, making them prone to thrift. . Some social distancing measures could remain indefinitely. Consumer spending amounts to roughly two-thirds of economic activity worldwide. If anxiety endures and people are reluctant to spend, expansion will be limited — especially as continued vigilance against the coronavirus may be required for years.
“The psychology won’t just bounce back,”
“People have had a real shock. The recovery will be slow, and certain behavior patterns are going to change, if not forever at least for a long while.”
The sense of alarm is enhanced by the fact that every inhabited part of the globe is now in trouble.
The United States, the world’s largest economy, is almost certainly in a recession. So is Europe. So probably are significant economies like Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. China, the world’s second-largest economy, is expected to grow by only 2 percent this year
For years, a segment of the economic orthodoxy advanced the notion that globalization came with a built-in insurance policy against collective disaster.
“Now, anywhere you look in the global economy we are seeing a hit to domestic demand on top of those supply chain impacts,”

COVID-19 Makes It Clear That Broadband Access Is a Human Right

Like clean water and electricity, broadband access has become a modern-day necessity. The spread of COVID-19 and the ensuing closure of schools and workplaces and even the need for remote diagnostics make this seem like a new imperative, but the idea is over a decade old. Broadband is a fundamental human right, essential in times like now, but just as essential when the world isn’t in chaos.
A decade ago, Finland declared broadband a legal right. In 2011, the United Nations issued a report [PDF] with a similar conclusion.

The pandemic has wreaked havoc with pretty much everything, including the high-technology business at large and the wireless industry subset. According to ABI Research, the pandemic has forced a delay in the crucial standardization work that would make 5G available for enterprise use cases. The relevant standardization body, 3GPP, formally announced a deferral of this standardization until at least June 2020, which would delay commercial rollout of industrial 5G until at least 2022.
Given that most industrial enterprises are looking to upgrade their communication technology in 2021, such a delay will result in 5G missing out on at least 25% of the revenue opportunities within those enterprises. And, in turn, it will push the rollout of 5G into warehouses, shipping ports, and factory floors until at least 2022.
Back in 2003, when the SARS virus appeared in China, the Chinese economy accounted for just 4% of global GDP. Today, it’s about 16%. China still is reeling from its ravaging by the coronavirus, but with the rest of the planet so heavily dependent on its manufacturing capacity, the global supply chain can’t help but feel the impact. According to the procurement and supply-chain consultants at GEP, exports of electronic components from China to North America have declined by more than 50%.
As a result (again, says GEP), we can expect the global technology industry to see massive disruptions caused by the coronavirus’s impact on production from China.
From 5G standardization delays leading to holdups in wide adoption of industrial 5G, to extensive supply-chain interruptions, the industry at large is on edge.

Researchers are using Facebook’s location data to provide daily updates to US cities and states evaluating the effectiveness of social distancing amid COVID-19
In coronavirus fight, oft-criticized Facebook data aids U.S. cities, states
https://www.reuters.com/article/health-coronavirus-facebook-location/in-coronavirus-fight-oft-criticized-facebook-data-aids-u-s-cities-states-idUSKBN21K3BJ
The COVID-19 Mobility Data Network, a group of 40 health researchers from universities including Harvard, Princeton and Johns Hopkins, said that since mid-March its members have been sharing insights gleaned from the social media giant’s data with California, Massachusetts and New York City.
Using mobile location data in the coronavirus fight comes amid intense scrutiny of the privacy practices of tech companies, which collect detailed information about people’s interests on apps and websites, often to target ads.
Facebook and the researchers leading the project say they have overcome those concerns by aggregating the data several times over and funneling it through academics. The researchers share broad findings with state and local health departments, which do not receive any raw data.
Facebook confirmed it was sharing the data as part of its nearly year-old Disease Prevention Maps program
The Mobility Data Network has become one of the first initiatives to harness mobile data for the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic, an approach deployed early in places like China, South Korea and much of Europe but scarcely used so far in the United States.
With the virus already spread widely throughout the country, the research focuses on the success of measures designed to get people to stay home, as almost 40 U.S. states have ordered.
GRABBING LOCATION DATA
About half of the apps on Alphabet Inc’s Google’s Play Store and a quarter on Apple Inc’s App Store use at least one service capable of grabbing location data, according to industry research firm Appfigures.

You never know what a new day will bring. What started as an early call with a friend to help get N95 masks to hospitals in desperate need turned into a roller coaster of contacts in a frenzied, pandemic-driven market. For the next 10 hours, I sat in on calls between brokers selling masks and potential buyers, watching the psychology of market pressures play out in real time as millions of masks changed hands in a matter of hours.
The high price point per mask, driven by extreme demand, has contributed to an overwhelmed reaction among potential buyers, especially in the U.S.
Millions of masks are being purchased by foreign buyers and are leaving the country, according to the brokers, while the domestic need remains alarmingly high.
“This is the craziest market I’ve ever seen,” he told me between calls while scanning through a stream of text messages from sellers and other brokers.
“If you are working with a seller who has masks but you can’t quickly show proof of funds, someone else is going to buy them,” he told me.

NSO Group says it is in talks with governments around the world, and claims some are already testing it.

“This is about giving governments the ability to understand the situation they’re facing and make informed decisions. It’s a really powerful piece of software.”

While the coronavirus pandemic is affecting us all differently depending on where we live, our financial situation and our basic health, one universal is the difficulty finding toilet paper.
Panic buying of toilet paper has spread around the globe as rapidly as the virus, even though there have been no disruptions in supply and the symptoms of Covid-19 are primarily respiratory, not gastrointestinal. In many stores, you can still readily find food, but nothing to wipe yourself once it’s fully digested.
This is all the more puzzling when you consider that toilet paper is an antiquated technology that infectious disease and colorectal specialists say is neither efficient nor hygienic.

Koronakriisin hoitaminen on jäänyt pitkälti yksittäisille jäsenmaille.
– Valtion tehtävä on pitää huolta omista kansalaisista.
Hajoaako EU koronakriisin jälkeen lopullisesti?
Britannia lähti jo EU:sta. Unionin tulevaisuus riippuu Heinikosken mukaan pitkälti siitä, miten kovan kolauksen koronakriisi aiheuttaa eri maiden taloudelle.
