Doing away with leap seconds has been up for debate since at least 2013, on grounds that they’re more trouble than they’re worth. Leap seconds have represented risks to important communications and computing systems. Time Lords decree an end to leap seconds before risky attempt to reverse time article tells that The Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) has made a decision, and declared that the world can do without leap seconds. Last week, the BIPM’s 27th General Conference on Weights and Measures decided [PDF] the leap second’s day is done: The body called for an end to leap seconds and for work to commence on a proposal for a “new maximum value for the difference (UT1-UTC) that will ensure the continuity of UTC for at least a century.” The change does not come any time soon. A 2035 deadline for formulating that maximum value was set, and the 28th General Conference on Weights and Measures in 2026 will vote on a resolution to make it happen.
It was considered that today leap second causes more problems than what benefits it gives. Leap seconds have occasionally been added to official timekeeping records to reflect changes in the Earth’s angular rotation. Leap seconds are painful to promulgate in the digital realm. There are many systems that do not handle leap seconds correctly. Remember that one time the Linux kernel couldn’t cope for a moment? The Linux kernel’s inability to handle added leap seconds caused plenty of crashes in 2012. A 2015 leap second also caused issues and in 2016 Cloudflare stumbled when confronted with the need to add a second. I also remember debugging some computer system issues caused by leap second.
Maybe we should also get rid of Summer time in Europe disruptions also?

Aikaa joudutaan ehkä muuttamaan: ”Melko suuri muutos”
Taustalla on maapallon pyörähdysajan nopeutuminen.
https://www.iltalehti.fi/ulkomaat/a/b16396bd-6688-455e-990a-50007ebcd19d
Ranskassa Versailles’ssa järjestettävässä konferenssissa käsitellään ongelmaa, joka liittyy vuorokauden pituuteen, ruotsalaismedia Svenska Dagbladet kertoo.
Ongelma koskee maapallon pyörimisen nopeutta, jonka vuoksi vuorokaudesta joudutaan mahdollisesti poistamaan kokonainen sekunti.
Karkaussekuntien aiheuttamien ongelmien välttämiseksi BIPM ehdottaakin karkaussekunneista luopumista toukokuusta 2027 alkaen.

Päätöksestä kerrotaan useissa kansainvälisissä uutismedioissa, kuten New Scientistissä ja Euronewsillä.
Global timekeeping rules change: leap second scrapped from 2027
https://www.euronews.com/2026/10/16/global-timekeeping-rules-change-leap-second-scrapped-from-2027
Global timekeepers have voted to end the practice of adding extra seconds to UTC, citing risks to computer systems and the prospect of the first-ever negative leap second.
The world’s official time standard will stop adding leap seconds from 20 May 2027. The General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) decided to end the practice on Thursday 15 October 2026.
The resolution was adopted at the conference’s 28th meeting in Versailles, where delegates discussed the future of world time.
Until now, leap seconds have been added from time to time to keep atomic time in line with the Earth’s rotation. But from 20 May 2027, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) will run continuously, with no interruptions.
Why the leap second is being scrapped
The old rules were meant to keep two different ways of measuring time in step. UTC is based on extremely precise atomic clocks. Astronomical time depends on the Earth’s rotation, and that rotation speed varies slightly.
To keep the gap between the two time scales small, 27 leap seconds have been added since 1972. The most recent was at the end of 2016. As a result, one minute could exceptionally last 61 seconds.
These corrections are barely noticeable for people, but they can cause technical problems. Computer systems, telecoms networks, satellite navigation and power infrastructure all depend on precise, reliable time synchronisation. Past leap seconds have already disrupted computer systems and online services.
Earth’s rotation makes new rules necessary
One reason for the decision is the way the Earth’s rotation is evolving. A negative leap second raised new risks.
That raised the possibility that, for the first time, a so-called negative leap second might be needed, with a second removed rather than added. Because this has never been done, it is uncertain how reliably technical systems would cope.
The international expert community therefore chose to end the existing rules ahead of schedule. Under the new regime, the gap between UTC and astronomical time will be allowed to grow, potentially reaching 3,600 seconds, or one hour.
Experts believe, however, that it will still be some time before such a gap would actually require any correction, so the measure is essentially precautionary.

Scientists have just voted to abolish leap seconds

Lasku antaa vastaukseksi noin 800 vuotta.
