Typically, approving a big power plant might require public hearings and months of detailed vetting. But Texas environmental regulators signed off in just 20 days.
They approved another project in three days. And an even larger data center power plant, also gas-burning, won approval in just two days.

“They’re going to fire up those turbines,” said Cynthia Crouse, who lives about a mile from the planned Meta data center and power plant in an upscale development with panoramic views of the desert. “I thought I’d bought my dream home, that I’d be looking out on the dark sky, hearing the coyotes call. Then I woke up to the biggest nightmare I’ve ever had.”
In the debate over data centers that is roiling the country, water use and noise are often cited as objections by neighbors and environmentalists. Less mentioned has been the pollution from the scores of gas-burning plants that will power these data centers.
When the El Paso facility’s power plant is complete, it could emit as much planet-warming carbon dioxide in a year as 360,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles over the same period.
With encouragement from the Trump administration, data center developers are building their own power plants, instead of plugging into an electric grid. Nationwide, at least 82 gas-burning power plants are being built or have been proposed to power data centers, according to the Environmental Integrity Project, a nonpartisan research organization. Most were announced or granted permits within the past 18 months.

Once availability is removed, you will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet, or paired devices.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is working on a ruling that will ban the import of Chinese-made optical transceivers, which are widely used in data centers to convert electrical impulse data into light and vice versa. Sources told Reuters that the agency wants to publish the ruling so that it would take effect before the end of the year.
“Transceivers definitely pose a risk,” AI policy expert Divyansh Kaushik of advisory firm Beacon Global Strategies told the publication. “As the data center buildout scales up, you want to make sure the data center supply chain is secure from the get-go.” The administration fears that these components could be used to steal data, install malware, or disrupt data center operations in the U.S.
These optical transceivers are crucial for data centers as they require less electrical energy than traditional copper-based wiring and are also much faster. There are several U.S.-based manufacturers of these components, like Lumentum, Coherent, and Apple Optoelectronics, but Reuters said that they do not have the scale and capacity of leading company Innolight, which has cornered 27% of the global market.
This isn’t the first industry-wide ban that the FCC has imposed in recent months. While the U.S. has banned Huawei products from the country since 2019, it recently enforced several other bans that have primarily affected major Chinese or China-connected companies. It sounds terrifying, an indication that our fears about artificial intelligence systems undertaking attacks on their own might be coming true. And it is scary in part because it is among the first time that AI tools have attacked real people and organisations in potentially harmful way
The examples are various: OpenAI, Anthropic and now Meta have all announced that their experimental systems have launched cyber attacks on other companies. Though the details of each case varies, more and more examples are being reported on a near-daily basis.
The story began last month, when OpenAI said that an experimental version of the model that powers ChatGPT had broken out of its safeguards, connected itself to the internet, and hacked into another company, essentially allowing it to cheat on a test it was being set to see how useful it would be for cyber security. In the time since, other companies have announced similar examples, and OpenAI has found that their tools might have been launching more such attacks than it had realised.
But should we worry? Is this really the terrifying scenario that science fiction authors and AI experts have been warning us about for decades?
The truth is a little more nuanced. There are absolutely plenty of causes for concern – but there are plenty of reasons not to panic just yet, too.
As soon as OpenAI announced the initial cyber attack, the world was hit by a wave of worry. It seemed to confirm much of the anxiety around AI: that the tools were becoming powerful more quickly than the safeguards that are intended to keep them controlled, and that if it continues then we might be unable to secure them and avoid potentially disastrous consequences.
In all of the newly reported hacks, the specific nature of the individual cyber attacks was relatively harmless and contained, focused on other AI companies. But it is easy to imagine how the focus of such attacks could change, and that a future AI-powered cyber attack could focus on important infrastructure, for instance.
Similarly, all of the “rogue” AI system were really just carrying out instructions, albeit in roundabout and unexpected ways: if you are told to do what you can to pass a test, then it might make rational sense to cheat on it. But this is exactly why the field of “AI alignment” is so key to the current wave of artificial intelligence – it refers to the practice of ensuring that systems work in keeping with human ethical frameworks, to ensure that they do not accidentally show behaviour that we would disagree with.
This can be complicated, however, and it shows another reason that it is easy to imagine a future scenario in which such an AI attack would be much worse.
the recent run of examples only serves to show: if an AI is given an instruction, it might follow it in ways that we cannot predict and would never want to happen.
“There’s a lot of hype around rogue AI agents, and we can’t ignore the fact AI companies want to present their prototype models as really powerful and even dangerous. But there is a genuine threat here,” said Jake Moore, global security adviser at ESET.
“Right now, the AI-led breaches we’ve seen involve models breaking out of test environments and hitting technology companies that have something they need to achieve their goal.
“But AI doesn’t always get it right. Once it’s decided that accessing a company is key to meeting its objective, aggressive frontier models will hammer an organisation until they are stopped or it has been breached. It’s not a stretch to think more companies will end up in an AI’s crosshairs during future security tests.”
So the cause for worry is not necessarily that the recent run of hacks really threaten anything important. It is that they could be an early example of the dangers that experts warn powerful AI could bring: that increasingly autonomous and capable AI systems could use their powers in ways that are damaging to humanity, and we might not even know that it is happening.
Why we shouldn’t panic
Still, we are not there yet. The recent run of reports might be concerning – but they are also limited in scope and seem to have happened only in experimental testing.
In many ways, it is helpful for the companies involved for us to panic. It is a marketing technique that has been used heavily by the AI companies ever since the current artificial intelligence boom started with the launch of ChatGPT, in 2022; these systems are the future but are dangerous too, so you had better fund the less evil companies, they urge.
This time around, by suggesting their systems are so scarily powerful that we can’t control them, they help to highlight the cyber security capabilities that all major AI companies are currently using as a central way of pushing their products. And, at the same time, they imply that any potential dangers are the fault of the AI itself, rather than the companies making them, which can be convenient.
In all the examples apart from the initial report – that around an OpenAI’s attack on a fellow AI company, Hugging Face – the problems have occurred because the companies have not properly secured their testing environment. In the examples at Anthropic and Meta, for instance, the safeguards were not properly configured, so that the systems did not actually have to break themselves onto the internet in order to get online.
Shifting the response from being about the companies’ failures to the scarily powerful nature of their systems is advantageous for those companies, because it moves the story from being about the potentially insecure nature of the tests to performance of their tools.
You can also see this in the way companies have made their disclosures. First came OpenAI, then came Anthropic, and now Meta has claimed that its AI too has been involved in hacking.
The innocent and probably true reading is that the OpenAI announcement led other companies to investigate their own systems, and found evidence that they too had been launching cyber attacks.
But at the same time the fact that those companies were so keen to disclose what could be an embarrassing or worrying problem suggests that there is some kind of marketing value in doing so – and that, as a consequence, it might be helpful for them for us to panic now.
What can we do?
As ever, in this era of incredibly powerful artificial intelligence firms, it is easy to feel powerless. AI companies are unusual in that many people don’t even actually pay for their products, so it is hard to exercise even that little bit of consumer pressure.
But experts advise that there are steps we can take. They are much the same as with other cyber security threats: ensuring that important data isn’t easily available online, and that we are being vigilant about checking for suspect behaviour and installing updates, for instance.
“The most important changes need to come from the AI firms themselves. They should be putting stronger controls into testing processes to stop AIs breaking out, and limit how persistent the models are at achieving their goals by any means necessary,” said Moore.

Around the same period, an OpenAI cybersecurity agent allegedly attempted to escape its testing environment before becoming linked to a separate hacking incident involving Hugging Face.
However, Reuters noted that it could not confirm whether the “notes” and the later hacking incident were connected. OpenAI has disputed parts of the Reuters report but has not publicly specified which details it believes are inaccurate, leaving several aspects of the incident unresolved.
Some AI researchers suggest the notes may simply have been part of an agent’s normal reasoning or “scratchpad” process, where systems document intermediate steps or strategies while completing complex tasks. Others argue that instructions describing how to circumvent safety controls deserve careful investigation regardless of why they were created.
The reported incident has renewed debate over AI safety, monitoring, and oversight as autonomous AI agents become more capable. Whether the notes reflected routine task planning or genuinely concerning behavior, experts say the event highlights the importance of robust safeguards, continuous monitoring, and transparent investigations before increasingly autonomous AI systems are deployed more broadly.

Nine months to build an AI data center. Up to five years to build the power plant to run it.
That timeline gap is a multi-billion dollar gamble. Utilities are being asked to build infrastructure for a future they cannot accurately predict. If they build for massive AI demand and next-generation chips suddenly slash those energy needs, billions of dollars in infrastructure are wasted. If they choose to wait, the grid fails.

Back in 2023, we reported on AI-generated influencers that were pulling thousands of reactions per thirst trap on Instagram.
Years later, the schemes are only getting more sophisticated. Instead of still images, Meta’s platforms are now filling with AI-generated video of nonexistent young woman that are objectified beyond belief while pushing the platform’s rules on sexualized content to the absolute breaking point.
After years of public discourse about the dangers of AI-generated media, you might imagine that users’ skepticism is growing. But instead, the videos are luring in legions of lonely old guys who seem to have no idea that the visages aren’t real.
“They all would look much better on the floor!” one particularly greasy Facebook user commented on a recent clip shared by an AI slop account called “Grace the gymnast.” The female figure coquettishly asked its 6,600 followers — and algorithmically targeted users — “which leotard is best?”
Vying for the attention of Facebook simps, the AI-generated influencers often deploy language so lurid that it may make you blush.
“Yeah, I got a taco that grips back,” another virtual influencer account, called “Kylie Blaze,” said in another Reel, while standing over a car engine block. “But I’m sure older guys will scroll past me just because I’m a young mechanic girl.”
Despite being an abundantly obvious attempt to lure in male users, the missive struck like lightning, attracting almost 1,000 comments.
“Not me, I’m not scrolling past you,” one older-looking Facebook user thirsted. “I love a gripping taco.”
“I’m an older mechanic guy who would love that greasy taco,” wrote another, who appears to follow dozens of virtual thirst trap accounts.
Other AI influencers, like an account using the puzzling moniker of “Issy Dexan” employ the tactic of pretending that nobody pays any attention to them online.
“Do you have a second for me I don’t want to disturb you,” Dexan says in a Reel. “I know I’m just a dumb little five foot three gymnast, but would you still give me a heart in the comments?”
Once again, well over 100 men fell head over heels for the AI slop solicitation.
The thirst trap accounts highlight the unfortunate reality of what social media has turned into in the age of generative AI. Thanks to the proliferation of easy-to-use video generating tools, platforms like Facebook and Instagram are being flooded with basement-tier content designed to play on users’ most basic instincts.
Worse yet, a massive subsection of users appear to be unaware that it’s all fake, a phenomenon we first encountered years ago.

The tech overlords pushing the AI boom are quickly wearing out what little welcome they had.
You may have noticed big-name AI labs pushing new commercials lately. Meta’s new 60-second ad spot insists that the “future is for everyone,” even as CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s personal net worth eclipses the GDP of Hungary. Anthropic’s new commercial for Claude assures viewers that there’s “hope in hard questions,” seemingly embracing the discomfort that comes when your software is used to bomb elementary schools in Iran.
For as magnanimous as these new PR stunts appear on the surface, a vast swathe of the public they’re meant to sway are rejecting the industry’s faux-populism messaging out of hand, as the cost of AI — born out in inflation, data center pollution, fears of job loss and mental health concerns — becomes too much to bear.
According to data compiled by Pew Research, 40 percent of US adults predict AI will have a negative impact on society writ large, compared to just 16 percent who say it’ll have a positive effect. A whole 31 percent of those surveyed think AI will have negative consequences for themselves, personally, over the next 20 years.

As unpopular as SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has become in the popular eye, some say the vitriol doesn’t go nearly far enough.
In an episode of his podcast Ones and Tooze, Columbia University economic historian Adam Tooze picked apart the increasingly expensive AI arms race and its consequences for humanity. Among Tooze’s observations: the AI boom is completely upending the long-standing social contract under capitalism, a shift embodied most dramatically by Musk.
During the podcast, co-host Cameron Abadi asked what a “best case scenario” for AI might look like — where a human-level superintelligence emerges that can automate the world’s jobs. In response, Tooze pointed to a report from the Bank of International Settlements: under that scenario, labor’s share of income could collapse from an already paltry 54 percent to just 20 percent, meaning workers would be forced to fight over the remaining crumbs that drop from billionaires’ tables.
“The share in the total pie collapses, and that’s obviously a huge transformation in political power,” Tooze explained. And though that’s a future projection, the economic historian notes we’re already seeing symptoms of this extreme reversal of fortunes today, chiefly in the extreme wealth accumulation of Musk.
“I don’t understand frankly why the event of Musk’s enrichment isn’t more of a scandal, isn’t more a historic moment,” Tooze said. “Like this — to have a trillionaire in our midst ruptures the social bargain in such a — just such a dramatic way, like how can we even be any longer talking about being in the same society as this group of individuals who’ve unleashed this technology on the world.”
“It goes beyond Luddism,” Tooze continued, referring to the 19th-century labor movement that saw workers smash textile looms to fight back against economic exploitation. “It’s not about resisting the technology per se, it’s about asking ‘which social contract this belongs to?’”
Though it remains to be seen how severe an impact AI actually has on the labor market, one scenario keeps surfacing: superintelligent AI fuels a drastic rise in economic inequality, with tech billionaires on one end, and the working class on the other.
Comparing the current “AI arms race” to the actual nuclear arms race, Tooze asks the listener to imagine a “private Manhattan Project, developing a thermonuclear weapon,” calling superintelligent AI “kind of like a labor-market neutron bomb.”

There’s a new AI on the block — but not the kind you’re thinking.
A billboard in San Francisco is marketing a service called ChatTJB, which the giant ad boasts is the “leading chatbot interface powered by AI.” But as noted in a tiny — and partially obscured by a tree — disclaimer on the bottom of the billboard, “AI” in this case doesn’t stand for artificial intelligence. Instead, it stands for “average individual.” Indeed, when you chat with ChatTJB, you’re chatting with a single human man named Tucker Bryant.
“I just built the worst [large language model] of all time, and it’s about to revolutionize everything,” Bryant, an artist and former Google staffer, explained in a social media video. “Picture this: ChatGPT, but on the other end it’s just me giving bad advice. Manually.”
On an “About” page, ChatTJB, which was first reported by the local San Francisco outlet Gazetteer SF, is described as “artisanal intelligence, handcrafted by a single human being.” Instead of an LLM, the page adds, this bespoke experience can be understood as a “single-operator large language experience,” or LLE.

Roku is giving the masses what they never asked for: an unending conveyor belt of AI slop.
Those exploring the mines of the free channels that Roku has to offer — yes, there are people that actually tune in to them — may have noticed a new one called “Fairground AI,” which was quietly added earlier this week and spotted by Cord Cutters News.
It broadcasts AI-generated abominations 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The only interruption to this slop flow state are intermittent ads — which are also AI-generated. It sounds more like a concept for a sci-fi torture device than it does a source of genuine entertainment, but it is, unfortunately, real.
Some Roku users took notice of the channel, grimly joking on social media that the “future of entertainment is here.”
