Google’s notorious AI Overview just handed would-be Flock vandals a perfect excuse to carve into the company’s controversial AI-integrated license plate readers (ALPRs).
ALRPs are wildly unpopular, especially online, where privacy-minded communities trade memes and videos cheering on destruction of the surveillance equipment. One of the more popular bits in this space centers on the idea that Flock’s ALPR’s are supposedly packed with valuable metals like gold, copper, and zinc — so, the tongue-in-cheek riffing goes, why not crack one open and cash in at the nearest scrapyard?
Clever or not, the meme hinges on a spurious claim. ALPRs do contain trace amounts of gold and other metals, just not enough to be worth the trouble. Unless you’re well versed in breaking down circuit boards, you’d be hard pressed to earn enough to buy a Big Mac, let alone recoup your labor costs.
Google, itself an exemplar of AI-enabled surveillance, apparently missed the joke.
Search “how much gold does a Flock camera have” and Google’s AI Overview doesn’t even push back a little bit. Instead, it flatly asserts that a “Flock safety camera contains about 1 to 5 grams of gold used.
(At today’s gold prices, that would mean each Flock camera contained up to $650 of gold.)
Google goes on to claim that Flock’s ALPRs hold anywhere from two to 23 pounds of copper, which would be an engineering marvel considering the whole device only weighs three pounds.
Google’s AI Overview cites two sources to back up its summary, and neither holds up.

There’s a real irony buried in all this AI slop: one AI-surveillance company’s search engine is quietly manufacturing an excuse to destroy another AI-surveillance company’s product. If that doesn’t sum up the current state of the AI-obsessed tech industry, nothing will.

The fight against data centers in the United States seems to be actually working.
The United States had 5,427 data centers at the end of 2025. Developers have since announced plans for another 3,969, yet only 802 of those projects are currently under construction.
About 60% of the data center capacity scheduled for completion in 2027 has not begun construction, while another 7% of projects already underway have been delayed. Analysts expect only about half of the AI computing capacity scheduled through 2028 to become operational on time.
One reason is that developers often apply to build the same project in several locations before selecting the most viable site. This makes the announced pipeline appear much larger than what is realistically expected to be built.
The physical constraints are also significant. AI data centers require enormous amounts of electricity, advanced chips, transformers, cooling equipment and skilled labor. To meet current construction targets, the United States would need an estimated 500,000 additional electricians, 300,000 welders and 550,000 plumbers.
Power may be the biggest obstacle. Data centers already account for roughly 8% of U.S. electricity use, and that could rise to 12% by 2028. Grid connections can take years, while wait times for essential transformers have tripled.
Public opposition is adding further delays. Communities are raising concerns about electricity prices, water consumption, noise and the loss of farmland. Around a dozen states have considered data center moratoriums, while permitting remains a major hurdle nationwide.
Of the 565 gigawatts of computing capacity currently proposed, one expert estimates that only about 180 gigawatts will actually be built over the next decade.

Last month, OpenAI made a headline-generating claim: that a group of its AI models had conspired to break free, access the internet, and hack into the internal systems of open source AI platform Hugging Face, which confirmed the infiltration.
The incident rattled the tech industry, seemingly illustrating how the threat of AI models turning into rogue cybersecurity threats had become a reality. Months earlier, Anthropic’s Mythos AI model had already also drawn attention after it was similarly found to have broken containment. Then, this week, Meta also said its own frontier model had been implicated in yet another inadvertent hack of a third party company, closely followed by security researchers saying Chinese open-weight model Kimi K3 had done the same.
But while it’s not hard to see an emerging trend, some thorny questions about how severe the situation really is are starting to crop up, with some experts arguing these incidents could’ve easily been avoided.
For one, the slow and surprisingly deliberate way OpenAI’s models moved during the Hugging Face hack — right beneath OpenAI’s nose — gives a whiff that the company may have been careless in monitoring the experimental AI.
In other words, these AI agents were leaving an enormous trail of bread crumbs that alert OpenAI’s many human researchers could have spotted. And the same, obviously, goes for their colleagues at Anthropic, Meta and Moonshot AI, the creator of Kimi.
Researchers have described the incident as “reckless” and easily avoided, as Wired reported late last month.
“A simple analysis of the actual risk has an actual simple answer,” security and compliance consultant Davi Ottenheimer told the publication at the time. “The OpenAI mistakes were dead simple.”
“I’d call it more of a defensive failure than exceptionally good offense,” AI hacking agents company Pensar R&D head Kyle Ryan told TechCrunch..

For one, these AI companies are highly motivated to characterize their models as a major threat to cybersecurity to stand out against neck-in-neck competition.

When every leading AI lab has had the same thing happen, it’s worth asking whether they should have taken those steps proactively.

Turns out there’s one thing AI chatbots are definitively better at than humans: scamming innocent people.
A new piece of research flagged by Wired found that large language models are significantly better than humans at pulling off “pig butchering” scams, a form of online investment fraud where criminals pursue fake, long-term relationships with targets in order to build trust before cleaning them out financially.
To pull off the study, researchers at Northeastern and a grab bag of international institutions pitted 22 test subjects against two forms of scammers: one an AI chatbot, the other a random human. After a seven-day courtship period, the “scammers” asked their “victims” to either download an app or play an online game, a stand-in for a financially-manipulative request (asks that, in the real world, could be used to hack a victim’s device).
Overall, just 18 percent of the human scammers acquiesced, while the AI chatbots were much more successful, courting nearly half of the participants.

It’s no secret that data centers have become a massive sore point for a vast swathe of the American electorate.
Poll after poll has found that the facilities are immensely unpopular, a key bipartisan issue that could prove significant during this year’s midterm elections. The situation has become so heated there have already been at least 37 arrests stemming from protests against the projects this year.
Broadly speaking, critics take issue with the sheer amount of space data centers take up, how much air and noise pollution they generate, concerns that they’re driving up electricity prices — all while barely making a difference job creation. Moratoriums on new data center projects like the New York governor Kathy Hochul imposed last month are currently a bipartisan slam dunk.
Yet in his great political wisdom, president Donald Trump is siding firmly with villains of the day.
“I saw Texas the other day sort of is against data centers,” he told Punchbowl News in a new interview. “I think it’s a mistake.”
Trump was likely referring to the gold rush-like scramble to construct new data centers in the Lone Star State suffering a brutal collision with reality. Last week, governor Greg Abbott announced a pause on new approvals on the projects to save Texas’ already shaky power grid from collapsing in on itself.
The president gushed over data centers being some of the “most incredible buildings I’ve ever seen” — while wind mills with far smaller footprints are “ugly losers” — and argued that they’re “tremendously important for the economics” and “income.”
The reality is that the benefits of data centers are dicey. Critics argue that the resource-hogging facilities only line the pockets of a few multibillionaires and most of the times aren’t accompanied by an economic boom or spike in employment in places where they’re being built.
Instead, researchers warn they’re leading to a significant rise in greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in Texas, where many are using gas-burning backup generators to stay online.
Naturally, Trump took full credit for the AI boom in the US.
“And if we turn off on data centers, we turn off on AI,” he told Punchbowl. “We are leading because of me. We’re leading AI. Remember this. I came up with an idea that was a great idea. Nobody thought it was serious.”

In June, Cloudflare found that website traffic from AI agents and bots had overtaken human-generated traffic for the first time — even earlier than predicted.
In the latest sign of the bot takeover, Time magazine has begun serving ads specifically aimed at AI agents. As Digiday reports, it’s an effort to adapt to a new reality governed by the tech. Their promise to would-be clients: by optimizing ads for the bots, brands could be made more visible to AI chatbots and show up in more responses.
The publication started stripping down its webpages last month from HTML to markdown — text-only versions, which live in parallel to the user-facing pages — that are easier for AI agents to ingest.

Global humanoid robot shipments totaled roughly 19,100 units in the first half of 2026, more than triple the 5,100 units shipped in the same period last year, according to data from Smart Analytics Global. The California-based research firm expects shipments to rise to around 60,000 units this year and reach half a million by 2030.
Shanghai-based Agibot overtook Hangzhou-based Unitree Robotics to claim the top spot in market share, capturing 44% of global shipments with 8,400 units in the six-month period, compared with Unitree’s 5,900 units. Their volumes dwarf shipments from top US companies such as Tesla Inc., Figure AI Inc. and Agility Robotics Inc., underscoring the pace of development within China.
In late July, the US banned imports of new Chinese humanoid and quadruped robots, along with certain components, citing national security and cybersecurity risks to critical US artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Although the number of humanoid robots actually deployed in commercially productive roles remains small, China’s policy support and funding from various levels of governments are helping accelerate their path into the mainstream. The prioritization of such robotics was on full display at the World AI Conference in Shanghai last month, where dozens of robot makers unveiled advances in dexterity, speed and capabilities.
An important shift is also underway in how the robots are being used.
“Industrial and commercial applications accounted for more than 70% of shipments, up from approximately 50% a year earlier,” said Linda Sui, founder and principal researcher at SAG. Regulatory uncertainty and geopolitical risks could shape the industry’s next phase of growth, Sui added.

The Trump administration on Tuesday announced a ban on new foreign-made humanoid robot imports to the US over “unacceptable risks” to America’s national security.
The move applies to advanced robots – including humanoid and four-legged machines. Many of them are made in China, which is competing with the US to develop robotics and artificial intelligence (AI).
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) also banned imports of power inverters – devices used in data centres and solar panels – which it said could also pose a risk to the US economy.
The Chinese embassy in Washington said Beijing has long opposed the US’ “politicising” of trade issues and sanctions based on “groundless pretexts”.
FCC chairman Brendan Carr said the agency was doing its part “to secure America’s critical supply chains”.
The FCC has added the items to its Covered List – a register of goods and services that are deemed a risk to US national security.
The ban applies to new foreign-produced advanced robotic devices and power inverters and does not prevent the sale or import of any existing models that had been previously authorised by the FCC.
The FCC cited concerns that the use of foreign-made inverters could allow overseas firms to turn them off, steal data, facilitate remote access and surveillance by “foreign government actors, or be otherwise exploited through a cyberattack”.

The amount of pollution spilling out of fossil-fuel generators is astounding. In the United States, this explosion of emissions is led by states like Texas, which on a global scale is comparable only to China in terms of new infrastructure powered by dead dinosaurs.
And as more data centers crop up throughout the US, that problem — of rising emissions linked to the accelerating demand for any kind of electricity — is only going to get worse.
According to reporting by the New York Times, the US currently has at least 82 data center-linked gas generators either in development or in the proposal stage. These are massive facilities which rival public electrical generators in size and power, only they’re not managed by the government, and the power they generate isn’t meant for citizens.
Instead, these are private generators, developed by big tech companies like Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta or Elon Musk’s xAI. The electricity they’ll supply is intended only for data centers, which grow ever-hungrier for power as new iterations of AI chips and energy-hungry large language models enter into production.
Assuming all 82 of those plants come online as planned, the NYT notes they could spew enough emissions in one year to rival the output of half the passenger cars in the US.
That’s an astonishing amount of pollution, made possible thanks to industry-friendly state regulators in places like Texas and Ohio, where permits for behemoth fossil fuel fired generators are approved in as little as 18 days, often without public disclosure.
It’s possible that moratoriums on new data centers might slow the burn, but unless states begin the unlikely task of banning new gas generators for existing facilities, we can expect US fossil fuel emissions to continue to rise precipitously in the years to come.

Americans are starting to see through the promises of tech companies and the local politicians they’ve wooed, realizing that the advantages of hosting a resource-hogging data center in the neighborhood are slim.

Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok warns that the AI boom may have a less stable foundation than it appears, as profitable AI hardware businesses depend on companies that are still losing money.
According to Slok, upstream hardware and infrastructure providers are benefiting from heavy spending by downstream AI companies, many of which rely on investors and capital markets to fund their expansion.

Tech Goliaths are scrambling to build as much AI computing capacity as they possibly can, come hell or low water. One of the dominant players in the space, Amazon Web Services, has its heart set on an AI data center so enormous that it could easily become the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States.
According to the New York Times, Amazon has confirmed its investment in a massive gas-burning power plant in Texas, meant to supply up to 7.65 gigawatts of energy to a planned data center in Pecos County. Should it come online as planned, the plant’s 35 turbines would be allowed to spew 33 million tons of CO2 a year, the NYT notes, which would easily make it the largest single fount of emissions in the country.
That’s a stunning amount of carbon exhaust, putting that single data center in a league with entire countries including Switzerland, Ireland, and Bulgaria.
It would also be in stark defiance of Amazon’s stated climate goals, which center on reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Even without the new Pecos County plant, Amazon’s emissions are staggering. The company recently disclosed a record increase in its total emissions last year, with company-wide electricity usage rising by 34 percent across 2025.
That the company is blatantly papering over its previous climate commitments isn’t a shocker at this point, in other words, as the company reaches new emission highs with each passing year.

Kokonaisuudessaan datakeskustoimialan Suomeen jättämän verokertymän arvioidaan olevan noin 100 miljoonaa euroa vuodessa, ja summan arvioidaan kasvavan alan investointien sekä sähköverotuksen kiristymisen myötä.
Sähkövero (Valtio)
Uudistus 1.7.2026 alkaen: Datakeskukset siirretään yleiseen veroluokkaan I (noin 2,24 snt/kWh, alv 0 %).
Kertymä: Sähköveroluokan muutos tuo valtiolle arviolta 47 miljoonaa euroa lisää verotuloja vuodessa. Keskikokoinen 100 GWh:n konesali maksaa jatkossa pelkkää sähköveroa noin 2,2 miljoonaa euroa vuodessa.
Kiinteistövero (Sijaintikunnat)
Esimerkki: Googlen Haminan-datakeskusta pyörittävä tytäryhtiö (Tuike Finland Oy) maksaa Haminan kunnalle kiinteistöveroa noin 1,5 miljoonaa euroa vuodessa.
Yhteisövero (Valtio ja kunnat)
Yhteisövero (20 % liikevoitosta) vaihtelee datakeskusyhtiöillä rajusti vuosittain
Ansiotuloverot ja sosiaalivakuutusmaksut
Laitteistojen ylläpito, turvallisuus, kiinteistöhuolto ja rakennusvaiheen urakointi tuovat verotuloja työntekijöiden palkoista
Pysyvä henkilöstö: Suurten datakeskusten suora ja alihankintana ostettu vakituinen henkilöstö (n. 50–500 henkilöä keskuskohtaisesti) maksaa kunnallis- ja valtionveroa yhteensä miljoonia euroja vuodessa.
Arvonlisävero (ALV)
Konesalipalvelut: Suuret kansainväliset yhtiöt myyvät konesalikapasiteetin usein emoyhtiölleen ulkomaille (esim. Irlantiin) EU:n käännetyn verovelvollisuuden piirissä, jolloin suoraa kuluttaja-ALV:tä ei kerry palvelumynnistä Suomeen.
Paikalliset ostot: ALV-tuloja kerryttävät kuitenkin datakeskusten tekemät kotimaiset ostot, kuten paikallinen uusiutuvan sähkön hankinta, siirtopalvelut, huoltotyöt ja rakennusurakat.

Suomessa datakeskusten jäähdytys perustuu lähes aina ilmaisjäähdytykseen (free cooling), jossa hyödynnetään pohjoisen kylmää ulkoilmaa ja vesistöjä.
Jäähdytys toteutetaan käytännössä kolmella päätavalla tai niiden yhdistelmällä:
1. Ilmajäähdytys (Suoraviivaisin ja yleisin tapa)
Ulkoilmaa hyödynnetään suoraan tai lämmönvaihtimien läpi palvelinsalien lämpötilan hallintaan.
2. Vesijäähdytys (Suuret konesalit ja merivesi)
Meren tai suurten vesistöjen lähellä sijaitsevat datakeskukset hyödyntävät kylmää syvännevetä. Esimerkki (Google Hamina): Hamina konesalissa käytetään Suomenlahden kylmää merivettä. Merivesi pumpataan lämmönvaihtimiin, joissa se jäähdyttää konesalin sisäisen jäähdytyskierron ilman, että merivesi on suoraan kosketuksissa laitteistoon.
3. Nestejäähdytys eli suora komponenttijäähdytys (Direct-to-Chip)
Tekoälylaskennan (AI) ja suurteholaskennan (HPC) yleistyessä pelkkä ilman kierrättäminen ei enää riitä tehokkaimmille piireille (GPU:ille).
Prosessorien ja näytönohjaimien päälle asennetaan kylmälevyt, joissa kiertää neste. Neste sitoo lämmön suoraan piiriltä huomattavasti ilmaa tehokkaammin ja siirtää sen pois salista.
Koska neste kuumenee korkeampaan lämpötilaan (usein +40–60 °C), se on ihanteellista hyödynnettäväksi jatkoprosesseissa. (Kuten kaukolämpö)
Näissä jäähdytystavoissa ei kuluteta vettä samalla tavalla kun USA:ssa paljon käytetyssä haihduttavassa jäähdytyksessä, jossa suurin osa jäähdytysvedestä höyryää taivaalle

Datakeskusten sähkönkulutus katetaan Suomessa lähes 100-prosenttisesti päästöttömällä energialla (uusiutuva energia ja ydinvoima). Tämä johtuu sekä teknologiayhtiöiden omista hiilineutraaliustavoitteista että Suomen sähköntuotantoranteesta.
1. Tuulivoima (Noin 40–50 %) – Yleisin sopimusmuoto
Tuulivoima on suurten datakeskusten merkittävin sähkönlähde Suomessa.
2. Ydinvoima (Noin 30–40 %) – Tasaisen peruskuorman takaaja
Pelkkä tuulivoima ei riitä datakeskuksille, sillä ne tarvitsevat sähköä tasaisesti kellon ympäri vuorokauden jokaisena sekuntina, myös tyynellä säällä.
3. Vesivoima (Noin 10–15 %) – Joustavuus ja säätövoima
Vesivoimalla on tärkeä rooli tuulivoiman vaihtelevuuden tasauksessa.
4. Aurinkovoima ja muu uusiutuva (Alle 5 %)
Maa-asennettavat teollisen mittakaavan aurinkopuistot yleistyvät Suomessa nopeasti, mutta niiden osuus datakeskusten kokonaisenergiasta on toistaiseksi vielä pieni kesäpainotteisuuden vuoksi.
