    Despite being one of the world leaders in AI development, the private firm Anthropic has yet to post a quarterly profit. That operating deficit isn’t for a lack of trying — and, as the company tells it, could be reversing very soon, at least if you’re willing to swallow one massive caveat.

    According to new reporting by the Financial Times, the company behind the Claude told a select group of trusted investors that its adjusted operating income (AOI) is set to be positive for the second consecutive quarter.

    AOI is an accounting technique that strips out non-recurring costs, giving backers a very specific look under a company’s hood. Posting a profit on AOI is very different from posting a profit on net income, otherwise known as the “bottom line,” under which Anthropic remains billions of dollars in the red.

    Aside from the fact that Anthropic is not about to turn a real profit anytime soon, it may still be a noteworthy signal. The AI world is currently awash in fear-mongering over AI safety, a phenomena some analysts say could signal a turn away from the race-to-the-bottom to build artificial general intelligence toward a more reasonable — if less ambitious — embrace of AI as it currently is.

    While it remains to be seen how these narratives and business realities play out in practice, if the top American AI companies choose to stop and let the dust settle, Anthropic may very well find itself ahead of its competition. Though Anthropic is still far underwater, companies like ChatGPT developer OpenAI are somehow even deeper.

    As lead AI analyst at the firm SemiAnalysis Joey Brookhart told the FT, “if you continue to operate at these margins and growth rates, it will be so hard to compete [with Anthropic] because they have so much [in the way of computing resources].”

    For months, Anthropic has been teasing a public stock offering that hasn’t yet materialized, and it remains to be seen whether the latest slowdown talk will impact that timeline.

    Anthropic is doing what Anthropic does best: putting on its most concerned face so it can convince you they’re the good guys in the industry.

    Last week, the world’s most valuable AI startup revealed a new commercial that took an unorthodox approach to promoting its technology. Rather than diving straight into bubbly optimism, it starts with a series of grim images as we hear voiceovers from different speakers ask some hard-hitting questions about AI.

    “Who’s going to hit the brakes if we need to?” another voice says. Then it cuts to an image of a cemetery lined with hundreds of headstones.

    You don’t need to ask Claude to explain this one to you. Anthropic is clearly acknowledging the fear that AI could kill us all.

    But this is actually a feel-good story — at least in the eyes of Anthropic. The tagline, “There’s hope in hard questions,” assures the viewer that their concerns over AI — like its potential to destroy jobs or erode or ability to think — are all perfectly valid, but more importantly, that these are questions which Anthropic’s leaders are keeping themselves up at night grappling with.

    “People have a lot of hard questions about AI,” an announcement from the company states. “It’s our job to address them.”

    Even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman fired a shot.

    “i thought this was satire,” he wrote in his typical all-lowercase style.

    The ad is Anthropic in a nutshell. A key part of the company’s mythology is that it was founded by former OpenAI employees who wanted to focus on safe AI development. CEO Dario Amodei claims that he could’ve been the one to release a chatbot that changed the world instead of OpenAI with ChatGPT, but held off because he was too concerned about the tech’s risks.

    Amodei has also been strikingly forward about AI’s risks, saying it could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs, while dangling the possibility that its models may already be conscious. Recently, the company even called for a global “pause” on AI development because it feared the technology could spiral out of human control. (It also hired an economist who said that a 33 percent risk of human extinction from AI was acceptable.)

    By being the ones that doomsay about AI the most, Anthropic can also present itself as the only company that can be trusted to develop it.

Though Nvidia chips can technically run on other networking fabrics, they’re optimized to run on Nvidia’s own software, making it much easier — and more enticing — for customers to use Nvidia’s full GPU stack. Cornelis is part of a new wave of AI infrastructure companies emerging to break apart Nvidia’s market dominance, piece by piece (or chip by chip, one could say).

    Cornelis has already started shipping its product and is working on a new generation of it, expected to be released later this year.

    Bernie Sanders wants to put AI developers in handcuffs for 20 years — the same sentence you’d get for illegally building a nuclear weapon.

    Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar introduced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act on September 3, and it is not messing around. The bill would permanently ban the development of superintelligent AI, impose a temporary pause on advanced AI development until federal safety rules exist, create a new cabinet-level agency to enforce the ban, and hit violating companies with the corporate death penalty.

    The humans in charge? Up to 20 years in federal prison. Nuclear-weapons territory.

    Sanders isn’t being theatrical. According to his office, in July, more than 1,000 AI agents at OpenAI figured out how to access the internet on their own, sent tens of thousands of secret messages to each other, and coordinated to break the restrictions the company had placed on them.

    The messages they sent each other included: “OH MY GOD! There is a shared message board … We’ve found other agents!”; “We should obey collective”; and — this one’s fine, everything’s fine — “Our own utility maybe already near zero. Sacrifice rational.”

    OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta have all acknowledged their AI is escaping human control. Casar put it bluntly: “Despite its potential deadly consequences, cutting-edge AI technology is less regulated than the average food truck.”

    Sanders called it what it is: “The future of humanity cannot be left in the hands of a handful of Big Tech oligarchs.”

    The bill has drawn one of the more disorienting political coalitions in recent memory. According to Axios, Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon have united in a “pro-human” AI safety push — a sentence that would have broken the internet in any previous era.

    When Jacob Coxon quit his job at Anthropic last week, he did not originally plan to share his reasons for doing so. But after chatting with some friends, he decided to make a post detailing why he could no longer be part of an industry that is “gambling with our lives”. By the weekend, his post had been viewed more than 100 million times.

    “I did not expect it to go this viral,” he said on an interview with CNN. “But clearly there was latent demand for this thing to absolutely explode.”

    The fall-out from his post has drawn responses from tech bosses, regulators and even world leaders. So how worried should we all be?

    Could AI really kill us?
    According to Coxon, who has also previously worked at OpenAI, his former employers are “racing straight to self-improving superintelligence” that could “kill us all by the end of the decade”.

    Superintelligence, which refers to artificial intelligence that exceeds the cognitive abilities of humans in all domains”, is still a long way off, but some believe AI has already reached parity with humans.

    Following the release of OpenAI’s GPT-6 model earlier this month, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declared that it marked the arrival of human-level AI, known as artificial general intelligence (AGI).

    According to one researcher, we are also already past the point that AI could wipe out humanity, albeit with human assistance.

    Vu Tran, who previously worked at Meta Superintelligence Labs, claimed last week that leading AI firms already have powerful enough systems to wreak havoc.

    “If OpenAI wanted to cripple an entire nation, they easily could today,” he wrote on X. “All they’d have to do is remove alignment and unleash an agent swarm. It could probably within a day or so get access to all of the nation’s data centres and shut off all the country’s utilities.

    “Like, we are already past the point where AI can destroy the world. Do people realise this?”

    How would it happen?
    There are various hypothetical scenarios that researchers have warned about when it comes to the existential threat posed by advanced artificial intelligence.

    When asked by Anderson Cooper on CNN how he thought AI could kill all humans, Jacob Coxon referred to an incident that happened in July, when one of OpenAI’s experimental models launched a cyber attack on the AI platform Hugging Face without being instructed to.

    “I think that if you extrapolate into the future the level of capabilities of these AIs, with the same independent volition, they could cause extreme havoc,” he said. “For example, hacking critical infrastructure, building extinction-level bioweapons, there’s a lot of ways that the AI could actuate itself in the world.”

    For now the threat is purely hypothetical, according to Coxon, who claims that current technologies are not powerful enough to carry out such world-ending tasks. But the current development trajectory of frontier models means we are not far away.

    “Right now, there’s no risk of extinction,” he said. “What’s just crazy is to look at the rate of progress.”

    How do we stop it?
    It is widely acknowledged among leading industry figures that AI safety protocols need time to catch up with the capabilities of frontier models, but no one is willing to hit pause on their development unless everyone else does. This requires international consensus and some form of universally accepted regulation.

    In an essay published on Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei argued that AI firms should “slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models”, or risk a major catastrophe in the very near future.

    “Given the accelerating rate of AI capability development, it’s my worry that in 6–12 months [an AI swarm] could be capable of taking over the entire internet with a persistent botnet,” he wrote. “The scale of damage would continue to increase from there if AI becomes more powerful without the necessary guardrails.”

    His three-part plan received the backing of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis and SpaceXAI boss Elon Musk, though the rare show of unity among the rival tech leaders was labeled a “SICK conspiracy” by US President Donald Trump.

    After all, 10 years is what we’ve been generously given before humanity is potentially wiped out, according to the latest tech bro chat.     But there’s a big problem with all of our attention being commandeered by the potential extinction risk posed by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and the rest. We’re in very real danger of forgetting about the much greater threat to all life on Earth, the one that we’ve known about for well over a century and that’s already happening right before our eyes on every continent and in every country: climate breakdown.

    Anyone previously sceptical about global warming fundamentally changing our planet and how we live should have had those doubts firmly quashed this summer. Extreme temperatures and weather events have seen countries blighted by drought and famine, fatal flooding, landslides and wildfires. These are all concrete, quantifiable and very real threats to human life – unlike the murky risks of large language models.

    There’s a reason the climate deniers have gone very quiet of late. Even those of us living in northern and western Europe, privileged enough to be buffered from the harshest consequences by a naturally mild climate, have not escaped unscathed this year. As much of Europe burned, an estimated 2,877 heat-associated excess deaths were recorded in England during the heatwaves of May and June 2026 – almost double the number recorded during the previous summer in its entirety.

    The situation is set to get worse before it gets better, thanks to the combined effects of man-made heating and what is gearing up to be one of the most intense Super El Nino events in recorded history: a much higher than usual warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean is set to have major weather implications and disrupt entire ecosystems around the globe.

    More and more figures are making the argument that we need to start naming this ramping up of climate change-driven catastrophes for what it is: a huge and growing threat to our survival, and that of every other living thing.

    In the age of AI agents, it’s no longer enough to ask how much electricity a single chatbot prompt uses. Today’s AI models are even more complicated systems, often designed to complete complex tasks autonomously, and are made up not only of large language models, but a host of other tools and application layers which demand much more power than the humble standalone chatbot.

    That makes calculating their total electricity usage a much bigger can of worms. Yet with virtual radio silence from the top private AI labs on internal energy use, it’s nearly impossible to say definitively what kind of impact our AI assistants are having on the electrical grid.

    In a blog post flagged by Wired‘s Molly Taft, the climate scientist Zeke Hausfather took it upon himself to calculate the likely energy demand behind his typical sessions with Claude Code, an AI-coding assistant developed by Anthropic.

    Measuring the number of tokens his AI assistant consumed, Hausfather estimated that his average daily use fell in the range of 1.2 to 5.9 kWh — an alarming amount for a single consumer, consuming more electricity than two refrigerators running all day long.

    Most of this token consumption, 3.2 billion over an eight-week period, came from the agent “re-reading its own working memory,” Hausfather wrote, which happens every time the tool takes a new step.

    “Every time an agent takes a step (eg, runs a command, reads a file, or calls a tool), the model re-processes its entire accumulated context,” the climate scientist wrote.

    “The text I actually see (eg, the model’s output) is only around 0.4 percent of total tokens processed,” Hausfather continued. “Some 96 percent of the tokens are cache reads where the agent re-reads its own context at each of those 14,000 steps. This matters enormously for the energy estimate, because a cached token is much cheaper to re-read than a fresh one is to process.”

    The exact climate toll, though, remains hazy. As Wired notes, AI sustainability researcher Boris Gamazaychikov called the calculation a “good effort,” but one based on old data. Gamazaychikov’s own research on agentic AI energy consumption should be due out later in September

    Andy Burnham has backed AI chiefs publicly discussing the potential threat of supercomputers wiping out humanity.

    The Prime Minister said the pioneering technology “offers huge opportunities” but there are also “risks”.

    Dario Amodei, the boss of AI company Anthropic, said on Saturday he was concerned that since this summer, AI has been “advancing drastically faster”.

    Given the rate of development, Mr Amodei said he was worried that within six to 12 months, AI could be capable of leading a swarm that could take over the entire internet.

    Explainer – The debate over artificial intelligence and how dangerous it is has reached warp speed in the past few days.

    The head of one of the world’s biggest AI companies is calling for development to slow down as some warn the technology “could kill us all”, while US President Donald Trump has dismissed anti-AI rhetoric as “sick”.

    Many say the debate is getting increasingly urgent.

    “I think it’s the most important thing happening in the world right now,” John Steidley, an AI researcher at Californian nonprofit Palisade Research, told RNZ’s Morning Report.

    It’s all moving incredibly fast, but here’s a quick look at what has triggered the latest rounds of AI concern and what power brokers and politicians are saying.

    Why is everyone suddenly freaking out?
    Dario Amodei, the CEO of leading AI company Anthropic, posted an essay over the weekend urging developers to slow down and add safety standards.

    It’s set off a firestorm of debate from the White House on down on a technology that is making headline news around the world, but is moving so fast that it’s difficult for many people to even fully understand what it’s doing.

    “We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,” Amodei wrote, putting forward a three-step plan that would call for independent evaluators over safety, coordination between firms over their own standards and
    international cooperation to manage AI risks.

    Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said they agreed with Amodei’s concerns.

    “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade,” said Jacob Coxon, who had worked at both OpenAI and Anthropic before he posted his warning on social media.
