This works for me:
I plug my DVD player's S-Video output to the S-Video input on my TV capture card and save the video to my hardrive. Then from there I can burn a VCD,SVCD, DVD, or I can playback the video off my hardrive back into my vcr via my TV out (RCA) port on my video card.
I use an APEX1200, and a Hauphauge WinTV-PVR. My video card is an ATI Radeon with TV out.
I don't know if the equipment I use makes any difference. Maybe because Hauphauge is made in Germany there is no Macrovision protection?
